On their way to the National Reining Breeders Classic, Brent Naylor and Robin Filbry narrowly avoided a major accident- but still became stuck in traffic for a staggering ten and half hours.
“We just thanked God we weren’t a little earlier, the accident happened less than a mile ahead of where we were,” expressed Filbry. “After five hours of not moving at all, traffic started to crawl and we passed the accident. It was just burning and there was fire everywhere.”
This delay meant that for Filbry, and the horses, the journey to make it to the National Reining Breeders Classic took more than 24 hours total.
“We’ve always been really adamant about checking the truck and trailer before we get on the road,” said Filbry. “This showed us why it matters to make sure you have your bases covered, because anything can happen.”
While waiting on the interstate, Filbry had plenty of good samaritans offering them assistance and water for their horses, but thanks to their meticulous preparations, they didn’t need the help.
Before departing, Filbry and Naylor’s checklist looks something like this:
Fill up the trailer water tank
Give horses forage cube
Put electrolyte paste in an easily accessible spot
Make sure the trailer plexi-glass windows are working properly
Fill a cooler up for the humans
Verify that emergency medications are packed
Filbry emphasized that what they do isn’t anything special, it’s just the best they can do when the horses they trust to carry them every day, are relying on them instead.
