Remembering Jo Ann White

Gazette staff mourns Jo Ann White, our longtime American Shih Tzu Club breed columnist, who died on March 4 at the age of 82. In 2020, the American Shih Tzu Club Board of Directors honored Jo Ann with the AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. The club website notes:

“Her devotion and service to our breed and the whole dog fancy began over fifty years ago. She was actively exhibiting her first Shih Tzu Tien and Nushi in matches during the later 1960s, before Shih Tzu were officially able to compete in AKC shows.
“Jo Ann has been active in not only Shih Tzu clubs but also all-breed clubs throughout the years. Her membership in the American Shih Tzu Club began in 1973, making her the longest active member of our club. Her involvement has taken many forms. She has served on the board of directors for many years, including serving as president during 1995.

“Jo Ann is currently a member of, not only ASTC, but also the Shih Tzu Club of Central Florida and the Manatee, Florida, all-breed club. During her early days she was active in the Shih Tzu Fanciers of Greater New York. … Last, but not least, Jo Ann made a lasting contribution to our breed in writing what many regard as the definitive book on the Shih Tzu breed, “The Official Book of the Shih Tzu.” …

“Jo Ann is the epitome of what every canine enthusiast should strive to be.”

God rest her soul.

What lovely piece to close out the ASTC National week!

Ying Ying the Great
From deep in our archives comes this shot of a Shih Tzu family from the Chumulari Kennels of Rev. D. Allan and Margaret Easton. Ying-Ying, the famous gold-and-white sire of champions, lies front and center.

Shih Tzu history was made in Metuchen, New Jersey, on September 1, 1969, when 3-year-old Chumulari Ying Ying went Best in Show at New Brunswick KC over 970 dogs entered. What made this achievement all the more remarkable was that it was the breed’s first day of AKC Toy Group competition. Alva Rosenberg judged the breed, and Jim Trullinger judged both the group and BIS.

The Reverend D. Allan Easton, who owned Ying Ying with his wife Margaret “Peggy” Easton, wrote in his Popular Dogs column, “We are proud that Chumulari Ying Ying should have been honored by two judges whom we have long been respected for their ability to pick good dogs without fear or favor.”

The Eastons were at the vanguard of breeder-owners who put the Shih Tzu on the map in those early years of AKC recognition.

The reverend, a Scotsman by birth, spent years in Peking preaching the Gospel to English-speaking congregations. He was a serious scholar of Asian culture, credentialed in Great Britain and America, and was first captivated by the Shih Tzu during a 1937 sojourn in Peking. One of the tiny handful Westerners of his time to visit Tibet, Easton made the journey by mule and pony across a 15,000-foot mountain pass.

His beloved Peggy was a nurse by profession and Shih Tzu enthusiast by inclination. After living a few years in a rural Scottish parish, where they raised Siamese cats, Pekingese, and Tibetan Terriers, the Eastons settled in New Jersey. The Reverend served as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wood-Ridge.

By the early 1960s, the Eastons had established their Chumulari kennel and busied themselves breeding and importing quality Shih Tzu. By the time the breed achieved AKC status in 1969, they were ready to present their great one, Ying Ying.

“There cannot be a Shih Tzu breeder today who has not heard of Am./Can. Ch. Chumulari Ying Ying,” Anne Seranne wrote in 1982. “Ying Ying’s contribution to the breed has been tremendous, and his qualities will continue to live on in future generations. He is sire of 29 American champions, including six BIS sons, each out of a different dam.”
