Brightstar Bernese Mountain Dogs Our priority is to breed Bernese mountain dogs with good health, temperaments and longevity. There is nothing quite like a Bernese. They're simply the best dogs!

We preform all BMDCA recommended health testing on our dogs, plus extra! My name is Karrie Thompson, my husband Cliff and I live in Randle, Washington. We're located just 2 hours southeast of Seattle and 2 hours northeast of Portland, Oregon; making it a lovely drive to the countryside. We own seven acres that we get to enjoy every day with our 6 Bernese. Our dogs are our family and they love to g

o hiking, swimming, and even go to work with us! We aim for our dogs to live life to the fullest with us in the beautiful Big Bottom Valley.

I fell in love with this breed around 18 years ago. From the moment I saw one, I knew one day I would have my very own berner. It took seven long years, but finally my dream came true and I bought my very first Bernese, Summit. Since owning Summit we have welcomed eleven Berners into our lives, hearts and home. We made the decision to breed these beautiful dogs in 2012, but after many setbacks we didn't get our first litter until 2020. Penna gave us 3 beautiful litters and a deeper love for the breed. During the last few years, we have spent countless hours researching breeders and pedigrees from Europe. Our goal is to import the best examples of the breed that we could find and breed from those lines. We have been so lucky to have imported from many countries including; Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine. Our priority is to breed Bernese mountain dogs with good health, temperament and longevity. We preform all BMDCA recommended health testing on our dogs, plus some extra. We test for OFA Hips, OFA elbows, OFA Shoulders, OFA Patellas, Degenerative Myelopathy SOD1-A and SOD1-B, and Von Willebrand's disease. By doing all recommended health testing on our dogs we hope to better the breed and produce healthy puppies!

A great article on growing puppies joints!

https://www.facebook.com/share/nVS5ndAZx3piBW6x/?mibextid=xfxF2i

When you get your 8 week old puppies, please keep these images in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

When you're letting your puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.
