Dental Day Yesterday! 🦷 Page (JC: Bookin Out Bruiser) had her teeth floated yesterday.

We had noticed she was resistant to contact from the bit under saddle. Turns out she had some sharp point and we had our equine dentist reduce her bit seat to improve comfort for her.

It’s always a good idea to make sure all health related things are addressed first before starting training so we are not asking our horses to perform when they are experiencing discomfort in any way.

Would anyone be willing to sponsor Page’s dental which was $100? 🦷 ❤️‍🩹

❤️‍🩹Update on the Sassy Buck and Sassy Little Pug -

We had our veterinary team examine them today and pull Coggins blood work.

In the spirit of transparency here are those records.

Due to the nature of this situation we will be having a second Veterinary opinion and appointment for Sassy Buck and Sassy Little Pug on Monday.

We have still yet to receive any of their previous medical history or any veterinary records from the previous owner or that owner’s veterinarian.

It was determined that Sassy Buck needs to be on a Senior feed diet due to the fact that she can barely defecate and allow for safe passage of her food.

The addition of this senior feed and additional veterinary appointment we are having these two be our focus for our $5 Friday.

Little donations add up to big ones, even $5 at a time, everything helps!

Update on the ongoing care for the three recent surrenders.

- They are all alive and have a veterinary appointment scheduled for Friday at 1:30pm

- Our farrier trimmed and put shoes on Bookin Out Bruiser yesterday and found a huge abcess crack that goes all the way under her hoof understandably making her sore. We are treating that currently and will make a separate post.

- We were not provided any documentation on these mares. Not even a coggins, health certificate for crossing state lines, veterinary records, or even a previous veterinarian’s name. Just the horses and the halters they had on.

- We were provided no financial donation from the previous owners at all.

Hoping this can stop the wild miss information from spreading.

** Update ** First of all thank you to everyone who has donated so far, your contributions are so appreciated and will go directly towards their care.

As this post is blowing up, to clarify a few things about our rescue:

- We do humanely euthanize. This decision does not come lightly though. Our Executive Director was in tears over these mares yesterday and is continuing to fight for what is right and their advocacy today. First, a veterinary exam is always required and veterinary induced euthanasia is the route we choose so that everything is documented if it should come to that. We always try to rehab, and rehome horses in any way we can, but sometimes there are cases where that isn't possible and we will not let a horse suffer.

-The owners knew Sassy had cancer and admitted upon arriving to our facility, that the reason they want to surrender is due to their inability to physically breed this mare again. We were never informed of any health issues. They were represented to us as all in good health and able to be ridden and adopted out, as is our protocol.

-We never saw these mares previously or visited their facility as others have insinuated. Upon accepting these mares onto our property, we have to make a judgment call. We are human and love horses - knowing that we would take on a personal bill to treat or care for them we accepted them anyways. We could have rejected them, but we could not do that. The owners knew we were a rescue, knew our policies, and decided to surrender. There was no “pulling the wool over their eyes”. If anything the wool was pulled over ours!

- To think theses mares could live out their days in a pasture is quite frankly absurd. The owners did not have the funds to care for them anymore. To claim we are fundraising for horses we are going to euthanize is also ridiculous. It costs $550-$600 per horse to humanely euthanize and have the horse removed from our property. Saying this is a money grab by the rescue just shows ignorance of what it costs to care for a horse at the end of its life.

- We in no way want to bring hate upon the owners as we are ultimately glad they surrendered them into our care. It's a difficult situation as we don't want to dissuade that, but we do not charge a surrender fee so, consequently have to fundraise.

Lastly, we understand this is upsetting, we are upset too. We will continue to advocate for the humane treatment of horses and do not take lightly to threats or bullying. Anything of the sort will just be blocked. We also alway have receipts and are willling to share if asked. ❤️‍🩹

---------------------
We need your help! Today we took in Three Thoroughbred mares (Two OTTBs) and sadly only one isn’t requiring immediate veterinary attention.

Jockey Club’s Sassy Buck has a large cancerous tumor on her tail and is riddled with melanoma. Unfortunately, greys are prone to melanomas and she has one of the worst cases I’ve ever seen. It has started to affect her ability to maintain weight and she will be seen by our veterinary team asap.

Jockey Club’s Sassy Little Pug was born with a wry nose but managed to survive. She underwent surgery in attempt to fix it but she still has a significant facial deformity. Sadly we also found she’s completely blind in her right eye likely from Moon Blindness and from the menace test we performed today, we suspect she only has marginal visibility in the left, as it has likely spread to the left.

Upon arriving we separated them not knowing the extent of Pugs lack of vision and Pug started to immediately get anxious and walking into the walls and had very labored breathing. We placed them together in our large foaling stall and she was much calmer, so that is how they will stay till our veterinarian is able to examine both mares together.

We are guarded with our hopes for them as I know that in all likelihood, Sassy buck needs to be laid to rest on a good day, before the cancer takes over more of her body, and I am not sure how Pug will cope without her as they are bonded since Pug’s birth.

I have to admit I’m frustrated and upset. We were not informed about any cancer in Buck and we were told that Pug was able to be started under saddle which seems very unlikely given her vision and fear.. but I am glad they are here so we can help them in any way we can.

The only silver lining is Jockey Club’s Bookin Out Bruiser who could definitely use a trim and front shoes but otherwise seems in an okay condition.

We would like to fundraise to go towards Buck and Pug’s care:

Little donations add up to big ones and this momma and daughter pair are so deserving!

Located in Nixa Mo for pickup, but can ship at buyers expense. All profits go to support the rescue horses!! ❄️🤍❄️ PM us and lll send you what we have available in your size!

While young healthy horses don’t need blankets, they do cut down own hay consumption due to not needing to eat to stay warm. They are also necessary for seniors, and horses that don’t grow great winter coats (like my OTTBs). We personally blanket when it’s less than 30 degrees and double blanket in the single digits.

Wow what a Christmas Blessing the last few days have been! 🎄🎅🏻♥️

First off is a Mini update 🖤🤍🎄- we were able to determine the the issue was in her shoulder, likely from a fall or being kicked by another horse, and then it never healed correctly. She will always have a hitch in her giddyup, and only ever be light riding sound at best, but is happy and healthy in every other way. The first Christmas miracle came from Jasmine’s adopters, a lovely family with three little ones who were looking for a companion for Jazzy and decided to adopt mini! We delivered them this week and they are getting along perfectly in their beautiful new home! Such a blessing for the sweet mares that have been through so much in their lives! 🩷🖤🤍

The second Christmas surprise was for Sharkey! Hankey the mule’s adopters had seen him come off the trailer and had been in love ever since. This is the perfect home for Sharkey as he needs to live in a bachelor/ gelding herd with his buddies due to being gelded late in life! We are so thrilled for him and excited to get updates!! 🖤🤍🖤🎄

Last but definitely not least, Thank you so much for all of the donations and especially a very generous donation from the Hand Forward Foundation and a private doner. These donations allow for us to rescue and care for the horses like Mini and get them into forever safe homes like these ones and we are so grateful. We could not do this without your support, so, thank you, thank you, thank you!! 🙏🏻 ♥️🎄

Everyone, Meet Mini! 🖤🤍 She is a super sweet Gypsy Vanner cross mare that we were able to rescue from the latest auction with our rescue funds raised. When we saw her, something about her screamed out to me to help her. She was in a cattle shoot for over 12 hours that day. Unable to turn, move, no food or water, literally penned in with the others.

She didn’t go through the auction ring until about 1:30 AM in the morning and like most drafts, the kill pen folks and horse traders were all over her. When we went to go load her, she did not want to step up onto the trailer and we literally had to lift her in to get her to load, she just stood there stoically looking very sad.

She has just completed her quarantine and upon further inspection, she has something strange going on with her right shoulder. There is significant muscle wastage on the right side and buildup on the left side, indicating some kind of injury at some point and likely she has been bearing more weight on her left front for some time. We have the veterinary team from Christian County Vets coming out this afternoon to hopefully do an x-ray of the shoulder to make sure there are no fractures and then make a course of action for her future.

Right now she will walk on it, but kind of swings it awkwardly like there is some sort of muscle interaction or weird healing process that went unattended.

Praying that there’s nothing serious in there and that we can get a clear image of her shoulder as that can often be difficult with x-ray as there is a lot of tissue to get through.

If you would consider donating towards her care, it will go directly towards her veterinary expenses. She is incredibly sweet and super deserving and I’m so glad we were able to get her out of that auction hell hole! 🤍🖤🤍

We can only take on rehab cases with donations and the support of our amazing horse community. ❤️‍🩹

Florida Bred Thoroughbred Gelding

All info and videos can be found here: https://www.secondsunriserescue.com/sharkey.html

Sharkey is a gorgeous sport horse gelding who was surrendered to our rescue by her breeder.
Sharkey never raced, probably because he's so sweet and a little lazy!
While he wasn't the best racehorse he has fantastic bloodlines.
Sharkey is currently in our professional training program.
Sharkey is a lovely example of a sport horse gelding who could go in many directions.
He is a big presence but is very respectful and sweet. He's a gentle giant mentality.
He is always a chill potato and has a super sweet gentleman.
He is the kind of horse you can pull out of the pasture and doesn't matter when you last rode him he's always sensible.
He's never offered a buck or anything remotely naughty ever.
He stands tied beautifully and is great for grooming, tacking, and with his feet.
We think he would excel in English or Western, can be ridden ba****ck, bitless, and a trail horse.
He's super steady and not spooky at all and loves trails.
He was kept as a stallion till this year where our team had him gelded as a 12 year old.
His one catch is that he still exhibits stud like behavior around mares so needs to be housed separately from mares.
He will run through fencing to get to mares if they are not solid.
He stands perfectly to be mounted and is well balanced under saddle.
He has been ridden in an indoor and outdoor larger arenas and out on trails alone.
He is very light in the bridle and his face and does well being ridden bitless or with a bridle.
He is currently in front shoes as he has thin soles so those or boots would be recommended.
He does not have any stable vices and loves coming inside in front of his fan in the summer.
He's not a big fan of bugs but we put a fly sheet on him and/or brought him inside and he did great.
He retired sound and has no history or lameness and does not require any maintenance.
He does seem to be prone to stocking up if left in a stall for longer periods of time.
Pasture or adequate turnout time is best for him.
Each time you ride him he improves and goes into a lovely frame.
He does well on an all forage based diet and is currently getting all alfalfa hay and 6lbs of Purina grain/day.
He loads well in a straight load ramp and slant load step up trailer with minimal encouragement.
He is up to date on wormer, Coggins, vaccinations, and farrier care.
Sharkey is just the sweetest soul and anyone would be lucky to call him theirs!

Boopers - Available for Adoption!

2 years and 4 months old
Draft Cross Gelding
Currently measures 14.3hh Should finish out to be 15.2hh

Videos and info can be found here: https://www.secondsunriserescue.com/boopers.html

Boopers is such a love bug!
He was an owner surrender who originally wound up with a herd at the Stroud Oklahoma Kill pen.
From there he was purchased by a family who also took a filly and then they sold him to a friend of the rescue's.
The friend didn't bond well with Boopers at the time but did with the filly so we took on Boopers.
Originally he wasn't halter broke and and he had to live in the round-pen for a month before we could touch him.
He got his name as he would always like to sniff or "boop" your hand before letting you move further with petting.
He has been through extensive groundwork training and joins up and does liberty work well.
He will go over trot poles and has worn a saddle pad and ba****ck pad with cinch.
He has a clam and quiet demeanor and is not spooky.
He acts like a true draft cross but has more of the draft side of the brain when working.
He has had his feet trimmed three times with the farrier and has a good solid foot to him.
He has never tried to do anything remotely mean and is a very sweet soul.
He needs someone who is going to finish out his training but give him the space he needs to flourish.
He has been on 6 trailer rides and loads up with ease.
We think with his conformation he would excel as a rope horse, pickup horse, English hunter/Jumper, Fox Hunter, pleasure horse.
He can be kept in a stall or out with other geldings and mares and gets along with everyone.
He's not the bottom of the pack but is not aggressive in any way so is more of the middle.
He's a very easy keeper and just gets grass hay in a slow feed hay net and that is all.
We had him gelded in February of 2024 and he did really well with the surgery and recovery.
He is a afraid of needles so we give him dormosedan gel to calm him for any procedure requiring needles.
He is a good boy to de-worm and no history of lameness/founder or any health related issues.
He is up to date on their vaccines, worming, and farrier care.
He has fantastic conformation and we feel anyone would be lucky to have Boopers in their life!

We are offering training at Second Sunrise Rescue to get him started under saddle when he reaches 3 years old.

Hey guys it’s $5 Friday and Jasi could use your help! ❤️‍🩹🙏🏻

When completing her evaluation we found she has a lot of discomfort when cinching which is very stereotypical behavior for a horse that has gastric ulcers. Kicking at the cinch or anything around their belly is one of the most common signs.

We are fundraising to purchase her some medication to treat these ulcers, so that they can heal, and she can feel comfortable and be ridden. The 30 day supply is just shy of $400, so that is our goal $5 or any amount is so appreciated and goes directly to providing her this medication to feel better!
Thank you so much. ❤️‍🩹🙏🏻
