EVCT has our own portable equine ultrasound machine. It’s a great diagnostic tool for sports medicine!

Veterinarians can identify tendon and ligament injuries, such as tears, strains, or inflammation, by observing changes in tissue texture, thickness, and integrity on the ultrasound images. This helps them determine the severity of the injury and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

🚨 WARNING: Cutest fun fact Friday to date is featured below…

When foals are born, their hooves are covered with soft tissue to stop them from damaging their mother’s birth canal and uterus. Sometimes this tissue is called “fairy slippers” 🧚🐴

One of the first investments we made in our first year of business was a mobile gastroscope! EVCT strives to provide the best possible care to the equine community of Tucson so we invested in Tucson’s first mobile gastroscope at the time for our practice.

Our mobile gastroscope consists of a long, flexible tube with a tiny camera (endoscope) attached to its tip. This camera allows Dr. Chauncey to examine the inside of the horse's esophagus, stomach, and upper gastrointestinal tract in real-time. This visibility allows Dr. Chauncey to quickly and accurately diagnose and treat your horse from the start. In addition to initial diagnosis, the mobile gastroscope can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatments over time. This helps assess the healing progress and make any treatment adjustments as necessary.

Our mobile gastroscope has made such an impact for our clients & their horses over the last year. We’re so happy to have such beneficial piece of medical equipment on the truck & look forward to continuing to put it to good use in year 2!

Horses have a unique way of expressing affection called “mutual grooming”, where they use their teeth and lips to groom each other.

Anyone recognize that little rider?! 👀
(HINT: He is the doctor at EVCT!)

Raised in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Chauncey was immersed in the equine world from a young age. With a mother who was a horse trainer, he not only inherited a love for horses early on but also was an accomplished competitive rider growing up! This early exposure to horses helped drive his passion and lifelong journey in the equine industry.

When someone asks how much experience Dr. Chauncey has with horses, just tell them he’s been riding since before he could walk! 😉

Horses can sleep standing up or lying down! 💤🐴

Horses have a unique anatomical mechanism in their hind legs called the stay apparatus. This allows a horse’s patella or kneecap — located in the stifle joint — to pop out of place and lock the hind limb in a standing position.

Happy “Truck Tour Tuesday” from the EVCT team!

A fun tool we carry with us is our SAA reader! Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a protein produced in the liver in response to inflammation in horses. Monitoring SAA levels can be a valuable indicator of ongoing inflammatory processes, helping veterinarians assess the horse's health and response to treatment. Elevated SAA levels may suggest an infection, injury, or other inflammatory conditions.

Water remains as important for your horse in cold weather as it is in the summer. As a matter of fact, decreased water consumption in the winter is thought to be the primary inducing factor for impaction colic — although there are other predisposing factors such as poor hay quality, lack of exercise, internal parasites and dental problems.

Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry f***l material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite, and decreased production and dryness of manure.

Studies demonstrate that you can increase your horse's winter water consumption if you provide access to heated water, but ONLY if that is the only source of water available. As always, if you have any questions about preventing colic in your horse, your local veterinarian remains your best source of information!
