Docs Checkin fire aka Hazel 🐉 pulled her first rodeo check this weekend at the Ninilchik State Fair Rodeo💗
It was a tight race, top 3 girls all ran 16.3’s. Love this mare to pieces, she is a true athlete and I will be honored if I can truly bring out her full potential. Thankful for the support team behind us.

On the road for a great weekend. Look at that draw sheet for the Jr Rodeo & Alaska High School Rodeo Association contestants. Pretty proud of all these kids, we have a solid group headed down from the valley. Good luck to all contestants, wishing all safe travels.

Big thanks to all our sponsors to make these rodeos possible.

Goat tying Clinic! 🐐
If you are interested in joining Jr High or High School rodeo this year you will want to attend this. Even Rodeo Alaska’s Junior rodeo has goat tying now. Come learn from Alaska’s best. Both Mackenzie Betts and Kailyn Beauvais finished first and second last season and the year before. This year we will get to see them compete at nationals. Bring your horse for this event, we will work on all the pieces then put them together. If people are up for a buy in jackpot at the end we could do that $5-$10 buy in. We can split it 1st and 2nd money.

Let’s kick off the summer with a fun filled weekend of learning new techniques to push you to the next level.
Getting this out a little later then I typically do cause a girl has been busy with other priorities 😝🙈

Note: I am aware this is the same weekend that 907 is doing their thing. My dates have been set and publicly posted before they posted their clinic. I just hadn’t had my flyer finished up. I already had to push it back a weekend, due the banquet being scheduled on the same weekend.

Only 3 spots remaining. Get your spot, this clinic keeps getting better and better each year. Beginners or advanced riders welcomed. I train and build on fundamentals, building a foundation for success. When the wheels fall off as they always will in any speed event we need to be able to go back to the foundation.

Consistency is key, if your not showing up and being intentional your progression won’t happen like you wish.

Here is some great information to help you with your bits and to understand them in further depth. Always be learning to better your communication with your horse! 💜

Happy Monday!

The shank of a bit is the portion below the mouthpiece. The weight, length, and curvature—often called “𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙥”—all play into how a shank will react to a riders’ hand.

“A bigger sweep on a shank means it’s going to react slower when pulled on,” - Justin Briggs

A straighter shank will give the opposite effect, connecting with a horse’s mouth sooner.

The same is true when it comes to length of the shank too, since 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧. A short shank will take less pulling to get a reaction while a longer shank will take more pulling.

Looking for easy explanations to help you understand commonly used bit terms? We asked pros like the Briggs and Troy Flaharty, of Troy Flaharty Bits and Spurs to break it down.

Strausbaugh Performance Horses

Jenny Strausbaugh

Started riding horses at one year of age and never stopped. She began rodeo in Alaska in 2000 at the ripe age of 10, quickly finding her love for barrel racing. She trained her first winning rodeo horse at age 10 and took in her first client horse at age 21. Ever since, she has been training horses “on the side” of her full-time job and raising a family of 4 kids.

In 2020 she launched her horse training business (Strausbaugh Performance Horses) to the public, bringing her many years of knowledge and experience to Alaskans. She believes in getting the youth involved in horse sports and sharing knowledge. Supporting this she is a member of local horse associations and promotes positivity and excellent sportsmanship to her peers.

Her core values are honesty, trust, hard work, reliability, willingness to learn, and a can-do attitude. Through hard work, consistency, and determination she strives to one day travel outside of Alaska and barrel race on a professional level.
