Docs Checkin fire aka Hazel 🐉 pulled her first rodeo check this weekend at the Ninilchik State Fair Rodeo💗
It was a tight race, top 3 girls all ran 16.3’s. Love this mare to pieces, she is a true athlete and I will be honored if I can truly bring out her full potential. Thankful for the support team behind us.

On the road for a great weekend. Look at that draw sheet for the Jr Rodeo & Alaska High School Rodeo Association contestants. Pretty proud of all these kids, we have a solid group headed down from the valley. Good luck to all contestants, wishing all safe travels.

Big thanks to all our sponsors to make these rodeos possible.

Goat tying Clinic! 🐐
If you are interested in joining Jr High or High School rodeo this year you will want to attend this. Even Rodeo Alaska’s Junior rodeo has goat tying now. Come learn from Alaska’s best. Both Mackenzie Betts and Kailyn Beauvais finished first and second last season and the year before. This year we will get to see them compete at nationals. Bring your horse for this event, we will work on all the pieces then put them together. If people are up for a buy in jackpot at the end we could do that $5-$10 buy in. We can split it 1st and 2nd money.

Only 3 spots remaining. Get your spot, this clinic keeps getting better and better each year. Beginners or advanced riders welcomed. I train and build on fundamentals, building a foundation for success. When the wheels fall off as they always will in any speed event we need to be able to go back to the foundation.

Consistency is key, if your not showing up and being intentional your progression won’t happen like you wish.

Here is some great information to help you with your bits and to understand them in further depth. Always be learning to better your communication with your horse! 💜

Happy Monday!

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙩

𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴 & 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘱

The shank of a bit is the portion below the mouthpiece. The weight, length, and curvature—often called “𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙥”—all play into how a shank will react to a riders’ hand.

“A bigger sweep on a shank means it’s going to react slower when pulled on,” - Justin Briggs

A straighter shank will give the opposite effect, connecting with a horse’s mouth sooner.

The same is true when it comes to length of the shank too, since 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧. A short shank will take less pulling to get a reaction while a longer shank will take more pulling.

Looking for easy explanations to help you understand commonly used bit terms? We asked pros like the Briggs and Troy Flaharty, of Troy Flaharty Bits and Spurs to break it down.

Alaska State Fair Rodeo is a wrap! Saturday Mother Nature didn’t cooperate as planned and the rodeo got cancelled for the first time in over 30 years. I would like to thank RODEO ALASKA for thinking about our equine athletes safety. 🙏

I was thankful to get to swing a leg over Deshka to Breakaway and she worked as good as ever for me, love that mare to pieces. 🤍🤎I roped him just out of the box and it popped off🫣😖

Biscuit got the calls for barrels, he tried his little heart out for me but a little body soreness got him. He is just coming into shape and two runs in a weekend he didn’t appreciate 🤣
This is always one of my most favorite rodeos but it’s always bittersweet cause it’s the last rodeo of the season.

I would like to thank all my sponsors and support team that keep me going all season long. I wouldn’t do what I do without each and everyone of you 🙏🔥

Timed Event Challenge at the Alaska State Fair did not disappoint. Team Strausbaugh killed it taking home all the breakaway money for the weekend. While the rest pulled checks in the barrel race🤍💯

Ninilchik Fair Rodeo down! Tough luck for me this weekend but Shylee had a great weekend winning the Barrels and Poles in the Jr Rodeo, and took All Around Cowgirl. She did the rescue race in the main rodeo and ended up third with her friend Kaylee competing against the adults even🤍🥰
For Jr High Rodeo she ended up 2nd in barrels, first in poles, first in goat tying, and just hardly missed in the breakaway.

Last week I spent the week in Oklahoma at the Better barrel Races Futurity and the Ruby buckle Futurity. We picked up my new puppy, watched over 4K runs of the best jockeys in the barrel racing industry, made new friends while connecting with old friends. This was something I have been wanting to do for some time and finally made it happen. I will cherish this trip forever and planning another trip already, in the meantime preparation is still underway to prepare my new Futurity mare to make it down to these races soon enough.

Don’t ever allow small minded people to hold you back, set you goals high where they scare you. If you have no clue how your going to do something do it anyways, start the journey, you will get there🤍✨

Thanks Kendra Marvin for helping plant this seed for me

If you correct your mind, the rest of the world will fall into place-Lao Tzu

This goes hand in hand with training horses, you can’t train a horse through understanding if your mind isn’t in a good spot. You’ll end up causing frustration within your horses 🐴
Spend a few minutes to get your head right before getting on each horse😊️

If you’ve considered me as your trainer please read☺️

With the new year under way, it’s a great time to reevaluate goals, achievements, and focus on the things that will get us to our end goals, while helping others along the way.
As we all know there is no growth without a little discomfort with changes but they are necessary.🥰

That being said I will be taking a very limited amount of horses in for training each month, and strictly taking in horses that are looking to enter the performance horse arena.
I am adding seasoning barrel horses & consignment as something I will offer. Consignments horses will be the only exception to the 60 day minimum for each horse scheduled into my program.

I’m putting more focus into building a barrel horse program to help grow the sport of barrel racing throughout the state of Alaska.

As for lessons, I’m taking in a limited number of clients and kids that attend Rodeo Camp in 2023 will have top priority. (Details on camp will be posted soon) Lessons will be in group format with a max of 6 people. Lesson will last anywhere from 1.5-2 (depending on the drills) and scheduled Mondays and Tuesdays only.

Any evaluations on horses will be held the second Thursday of every month starting in April, haul ins only.

I’ve been so grateful to the people who have trusted me as your trainer and believe in my program, every year I am having to turn away horses as I just can’t take them all. I’m hoping these changes will help that as I’m steering towards a more unique path.
I’d love to help you make your future champion, if you’re looking for a barrel horse/rope horse trainer, don’t hesitate to Dm/Pm me.

My website is being updated to reflect a few price changes as well, it should be completed within the next few weeks

I look forward to working with you in the months to come👍

Hello 👋

I apologize I have been absent for a bit! Just after Christmas we completely disconnected as a family to enjoy the beach life in Maui. It was sure great to live on island time for 10 days 🏖️👙
We are back and getting back in the swing of things, stay tuned for upcoming changes for the 2023 season. Lots happening with very limited availability so you’ll want to act fast if you want in on any services I offer in 2023.

Strausbaugh Performance Horses

Jenny Strausbaugh

Started riding horses at one year of age and never stopped. She began rodeo in Alaska in 2000 at the ripe age of 10, quickly finding her love for barrel racing. She trained her first winning rodeo horse at age 10 and took in her first client horse at age 21. Ever since, she has been training horses “on the side” of her full-time job and raising a family of 4 kids.

In 2020 she launched her horse training business (Strausbaugh Performance Horses) to the public, bringing her many years of knowledge and experience to Alaskans. She believes in getting the youth involved in horse sports and sharing knowledge. Supporting this she is a member of local horse associations and promotes positivity and excellent sportsmanship to her peers.

Her core values are honesty, trust, hard work, reliability, willingness to learn, and a can-do attitude. Through hard work, consistency, and determination she strives to one day travel outside of Alaska and barrel race on a professional level.
