The 2nd annual Mock Invitational Test 2024 is in the books! It was an honor to host 26 dogs, handlers, judges, and volunteers for this great event. People and dogs came as far as Colorado, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Thank you to the people who helped pull this off. Paul Coenen; Roy Ames, Scott Semrad, Shanda Lear, Bert Holbus, Sheryle Tepp, and Todd Smith. Everyone was so generous with the food and your time; most of all, everyone was very generous with eggs! 🥚 Thank you, NAVHDA friends!! We even had time for a puppy swim! Miss Lucy!! 🐾❤️

Reflection and the future.
Happy Birthday, Izzy! Izzy was one of our foundation girls who put Hurricane Kennels on a small corner of the map. Izzy was our first NAVHDA Versatile Champion, and so far today, our only max score VC! I was trying to find the right moment to brag about Izzy's grandchildren, and then today, reminiscing about our Invite run together in 2012 and it being her birthday, I thought today was perfect. Izzy grandchildren, VC Porter and VC Ale “Allie,” are why we received our second NAVHDA Invitational Breeders Award this past year. The privilege of having Izzy in my life has allowed me meet some of my very best friends and be in places I never thought imaginable. My good friend Stacy Horst ran and passed VC Hurricane Porter James in 2021, and we passed VC Hurricane Brandy Alexander this past year in 2023. Two chicks from different parts of the country are doing what most people don’t understand. How blessed are we! Hopefully, Izzy's great-grandchildren will soon help us keep working, dreaming, and striving . Thank you, Izzy!! Aka “The Izzinator,” I miss you! ❤️

We are honored, humbled, and proud of all Wally Richardson and Di Richardson have done with VC Hurricane. Nobody to Blame but me, MH “Muddy,” at only three! Muddy and Wally went 6 for 6 AKC tests to become an AKC Master Hunter. Blessed!

It was an honor to sit down with Mike from Ugly Dog Hunting in our Kennel and record this podcast. Recording the podcast really made me think about how this crazy bird dog world got started for me. Thanks, Dad! Time goes so fast, and we never know what the next day will bring. Thank you, Mike, for allowing me to remember and reflect. There are more great bird dog hunting, training, judging, memories, and stories to come. At least, I hope! 🐾♥

What an excellent weekend for Hurricane pups across the county, testing their natural ability. We are blessed and thankful for our Team Hurricane, showing off their ability this weekend. Congratulations, Mike and Bodhi, NA prize 1, Wally and Jager, NA prize 1, and Molly and Larry, NA Prize 1! Thank you to all our puppy buyers!
Paul and I were also honored to host our annual SO MN NAVHDA natural ability test at the kennel this weekend. Again, so many great memories were made. It rained most of the weekend, but we made the best of it. Our old dog Brandy loves test weekends, as she is proficient at cleaning up after the puppy track.

The Invitational 2023 will be one of the most memorable experiences in our dog testing adventures. We started our 2023 training season with six Hurricane Kennel-bred dogs qualifying for the 2023 NAVHDA Invitational, with five committed to moving forward to one of the premier dog events in the county in Bloomingdale, Ohio. The summer was filled with Paul and I working with our two Hurricane dogs daily and on weekends with friends and training partners from the 2023 WI NAVHDA Invitational Training Group. This journey has led us to do what NAVHDA does best: making lifelong friends. Leading up to our test day, we were nervous but also ready! We had spent the summer with people we learned from. The nerves were high as we wanted the best for EVERYONE.
The day Paul tested his Ricci, Paul and I were thinking heavily of Craig Jones and Brandy Karchinski - Jones, whom we committed to taking VC Sharp Shooters One over the Limit "Luke" daughter, Ricci, to the NAVHDA Invitational and five years later, we fulfilled that promise. Throughout the Invite journey, we had one of our foundation girls, whom we lost last year, Chloe, with us in spirit. Each Hurricane dog handler that ran this year had a Chloe rock in their pockets. Ricci wore her mom's blue collar the day she ran her test, and I had Chloe's collar in my pocket while running Ale (pronounced Allie). VC Ricci ran on Thursday, and our VC Ale ran on Sunday. Ale felt we needed an extra challenge and went into heat the week before her big day. Therefore we must run on the last day. Running when you were 12 days into your heat cycle and sitting in a kennel for six days and after an obscene amount of birds released in the field in the days leading up to the test led to challenges, but somehow, we made it. The three other hurricane-bred dogs that ran this summer are some of our best friends, and we feel truly blessed.
This year, Paul and I also earned our second NAVHDA Invitational Breeders award, with Ale passing two years after her littermate, VC Hurricane Porter James, passed in Iowa at just over two years old.
Thank you to our family and the NAVHDA family for helping us achieve these memories and accomplishments.

Hurricane Kennel “Bred for field and Family.”
Hurricane Kennels is about family. Our shorthairs are our family. Angie and I focus our lives on the training and breeding of high quality German Shorthaired Pointers that are excellent hunters and a pleasure in the home.
Utilizing AKC and NAVHDA hunt tests as our proving grounds, we strive to provide well socialized puppies with excellent bloodlines ready to meet your expectations.
In 2011 we kept VC Hurricane's Brandy Old Fashion, MH from our own breeding with our VC Abby's RNB Shellshocked Izzy, MH and INT CH, VC Sharp Shooters Man in Black, MH “Cash”. She is a smaller female with a huge heart. She covers the field with precision and can bust cattails with the best of them. Her nose is keen and her desire strong. Brandy loves to hunt and is a snuggler as well. She is animated and fun to watch. When she wags her tail her whole body wags! A true pleasure in the home, vehicle and field. Brandy is now a Versitile Champion after passing the NAVHDA Invitational and completed her AKC Master Hunter title the following weekend (See pics on our BIG NEWS page). She is an absolute blast to hunt with!!! We are looking forward to having a litter with her. In 2010 we were fortunate enough to get Chloe. She was from a large litter and there were numerous puppies that showed the drive and style we wanted. To say we hit the jackpot is an understatement. Chloe retrieves on land or in water with gusto, hunts all day long, loves kids, protects the home, and talk about style and flash! Whether pheasant hunting in North Dakota, or grouse hunting in northern Wisconsin, Chloe knows how to make the most out of the cover to find birds. Chloe's last litter was another success and we look for great things in the future from her pups. We have kept the female from her last litter. Zoe will receive the best of training and exposure with the hopes of continuing Chloe's bloodline for years to come.
