Passed out cards from Grandview to Salado, at feed stores and Veterinarian offices. If you know anyone looking for a Farrier

Especially in a wet year in Central Texas founder tends to raise it's head, especially among donkeys and miniature horses. The reasons for founder can be endless but most of the time it comes from feeding foods with too much nutrition (especially sugar) and or the spring grass having too much sugar in it for your animals system to deal with. That being said, if you would like to avoid founder but insist on feeding sugary feed, consider cutting the sugary feed out from March to June when the sugar content in the grass is high.
Once you have an issue with founder it will be a life long situation. Yes every case is different but some animals will need constant care after their first onset. Others will do pretty good until a wet spring comes along and brings the founder back in full force. Some will founder every spring.
Also if you have an animal that you never mess with that may founder at some point, go out and pet it. It will come to enjoy being petted and as it enjoys being petted more, work your way down to touching and handling it's legs and feet. If you do this slowly your animals will be much more accustomed to being handled in a way that a Farrier will need to in order to help it with it's feet. If your animal has never had it's legs touched before when the Farrier comes and tries to pick up it's feet to help it, it may start fighting the Farrier as if it is fighting for it life, because it doesn't understand what is happening and it's legs are it's method of fight and flight to safety. Drugs from the vet can be helpful, but the more fear the animal has, the less likely the drugs are to work, because the animal still has a choice of how to handle the situation.
Wish I could have thought about mentioning these things earlier in the year. Best wishes to all of you.
