Miss Janie is now 2yrs old. So hard to believe how time has flown by since she came in as a pup. As a teenager she refuses to act as if her knees are abnormal, playing, running, and guarding the property. She, Mimi, and Paulie play all day long and crash hard at night. She’s feisty, bossy, loves anything edible and knows how to lay on the charm. We love that she’s enjoying herself despite her handicap. Dogs are so much stronger than humans. This girl is no exception. Then there’s that face….😍🥰

Layla strikes a pose because she really wants you to see 1) How good she is, 2) How well she sits, 3) How perfect she is so that you'll fall in love with her. Gorgeous, well mannered, and a younger-than-a-senior-senior (b/c she thinks she's 2yrs old), Layla has so much delight to share and food for you to feed her. Today was a sad day. Baxter was having a painfully tough time cognitively. Dementia set in basically overnight, and he eventually had some seizures. He panicked continually, frantic to get out the window, climb in the bathtub, out of the bathtub, onto the commode, on the bed, off the bed, into the refrigerator, and anything else that was climbable or enter-able. No amount of consoling comforted him. In fact, it made him more agitated. He was terribly afraid and confused. We tried medication, but as soon as it started wearing off, he was back to the heightened panic. Then today, he either had a vestibular episode or a stroke, and developed the head tilt and difficulty walking. Had he been healthy otherwise, this would have been manageable. But with the struggle of either being asleep or awake with uncontrollable fright, he had no quality of life. I can't imagine feeling that way myself, and I don't want anyone else to experience it either. In veterinary medicine we have the ability to free them of such emotional and physical pain, allowing them to feel good again. So today we let Baxter find his health in heaven. I hurt so badly for him, especially knowing his perky, happy, feisty, lovable side. It's a terrible, terrible disease.

Yet there is one lovely thing about his passing...now he is with his mama again who we lost recently...a dear, loving, beautiful woman who adored her pets and spread love to so many animals and people alike. I have no doubt she greeted him with an enormous smile and great big hug. It's a beautiful thought to know they are together again. ❤ I feel blessed that I was trusted to care for Baxter in his late years, as well as his brother.

Have fun you two. We're thinking of you down here and smiling at the thought of you side by side, getting into all sorts of shenanigans. Much love to you. 💞

Miss Arietta’s looking good! The sore on her f***y is almost completely healed and her hair is coming in nicely. Not sure of her weight at the moment, but she’s definitely gained. She is bouncy, kissy, huggy, lightening fast, and adores her rope ring. She is confused, however, as to why the cats aren’t enamored by her charm. In time, you social butterfly. In time.

Apologies for not posting in a bit. There's been a lot going on; a lot to absorb in many areas. But, last week I found a lump on Magoo's chin. A very hard, very large lump & surrounding area, including the jaw bone. X-rays showed something our two vets, the dentist, & internist all said was ugly - i.e. appears as cancer.

I'm just mad. The sweetest, happiest, most positive dog in the world has been hit with everything & never stopped smiling - now this. It's not fair. But, it's reality so decisions have to be made.

I've thought long & hard b/c my main concern is Magoo. If we had endless funds, ideal steps would be a CT & (if applicable) radiation. OR, removal of that part of the jaw b/c even if benign, it will eventually start causing problems, regardless. Otherwise we look at palliative care.

If he were younger & healthier, we'd do the removal. He's not, though. He has allergic airway disease, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, urinary issues, progressive retinal atrophy, a beat up immune system, & he's an 8yr old, 75lb dog. So surgery is a "no." The CT is diagnostic & radiation is pending on the type of mass found. I honestly don't know how far it will go financially either.

The mass developed extraordinarily fast & was bigger in under a week. We've started him on an antibiotic in case he's developed a 2ndary infection since the mouth is a likely place for that to happen & may be cause of fast growth through the week. It's painful now, so we're increasing pain meds (he gets currently for old dog aches) & maybe the anti will help, too.

I'm doing nothing but what's right for Magoo, specifically. I don't want to put more on him & make what's left of his darling life harder for him to bear. There is SO much going through my head right now. I can't help but research, despite, b/c the heart fights the mind & I need details. I need to sort it out & go from there. But again - it's what's best for our ever precious Magoo.

Please keep him & all of us in your thoughts & prayers. Nothing's immediate, but sadly inevitable.

When you got skills…sorta. 🥰 But look how handsome and sa-weeeeet! 😍Dingo is SUCH a good boy and so smart. He will be the best best-friend to anyone (unless you’re a cat). Wonderful with kids and other dogs! Even with a sassy foster sister who rules the roost, he still wants to show her love. Consider Dingo as your sidekick and see how wonderful the world will be not only for you, but for him. 🐾

WARNING - GRAPHIC PHOTOS: Simply put, one of our fosters said they really wanted to help this girl. So meet Arietta.

A shelter volunteer saw her outside of a Walmart & tried to help, but Arietta was so afraid that she couldn't catch her. Their kind animal control officers worked 3hrs to gain her trust. We are so grateful to them because this girl is an absolute dream. 💞

She came to the shelter at 35lbs and approx 3yrs old, as you see her in the first photo. They worked hard for her & she's now 42lbs! At the vet she wanted to hug & kiss everybody...EVERY body. She loves to hug & snuggle, & kiss & snuggle, & kiss, & give more kisses. She's extremely gentle, bright eyed, & well mannered. She is, of course, emaciated, & has several spots on her skin, mainly the pressure wound on her hip. The shelter worked hard on her wounds, & we're continuing with antibiotics & a wound cream. She is slightly anemic b/c she was covered in fleas when they found her, but bloodwork showed she's otherwise doing well...we just need to slowly get her back into shape. Her recovery will take time, but we're going to share her journey with you all the way! Currently she's picking out her favorite sweater and jacket for the polar blast, destroying toys, & doing some zoomies!

Some of you might recognize the word Arietta from music theory as an elaborate, short solo piece. We say it's beautiful music for the soul, just like our sweet new girl. Welcome little one! Prepare to get your belly full and more kisses that you ever dreamed!

VET DAY!! Today Baxter and Paulie saw doc for their check up. Baxter has a big fatty area on his side, but thankfully that's all it is vs something of consequence. He got a nail trim and some blood drawn for bloodwork and heartworm test, and thankfully bloodwork gave us good results. He does have some ouchy hips, to which we've already started him on omegas, cbd, and joint care, so we'll add an anti-inflammatory to help, as well. I'm super proud of Paulie, who is the one that is so scared. While he grumbled a smidgen when doc walked into the room, he calmed and was a champ for his vaccines, heartworm test and exam. As you can tell in the photo, he even went up to the nurse for some petting! I kept telling him how proud I was of his behavior. He also let my brother walk him over the weekend, and has a crush on Mimi the Pyr, so he's certainly learning and opening up, slowly but surely.

They are lovely, fun, handsome boys and I'm glad we've been able to help them. While Baxter and his 14yr old sprightly self will remain in our sanctuary, we look forward to helping Paulie overcome his fears and find a home that will adore his sweet little face, his hippity-hop when he walks, and his tender heart while understanding he can be a little scared. Let's give these babies a high 5 for just being awesome!

The new year brings us new adventures and two new handsome boys. Meet Baxter and Paulie. These two brothers adore each other due to their very big hearts. Baxter, a senior corgi mix, is 14yrs old. He is a soft hearted but tough ol’ guy who is full of charm. His handsome reddish brown, 4yr old brother Paulie is a bigger baby who finds himself very afraid of people, but who also loves to be loved when he feels safe with you. Both have endured a great loss and are uncertain of what’s happened, but they are settling in well. We look forward to letting them decompress and find themselves lots of toys and buddies to play with. They welcome your positive thoughts and prayers while they adjust, see the vet, learn to trust, and learn new routines. We are thankful we were able to step in and help them at a time when they needed it most. Such darling, darling boys! ❤️

This year has been full of difficulties, but many blessings, as well. We have placed some fantastic animals in wonderful homes, saved some amazing dogs, and helped others we've been caring for over time, making them stronger and happier. It has been an honor to work with each of them, for they have dispositions and hearts that deserve the best. You are an enormous part of this success through your kindness, support, and generosity, and we are forever grateful. While the animals continue to rise in numbers in shelters, more owners are unable to keep theirs, and strays are found in abundance, we vow to keep fighting for those who need us. We hope you will stay with us in our journey, for we have been delighted to have you by our side. Let's continue to do good things together and make 2025 the best year yet. We CAN, and we WILL! 💞🙌💪🐾
