Dogs, Dogs, and More Dogs
Ever since I was born, I’ve been around dogs. When I was about 11 years old, I begged my parents for my own dog, but not just any dog. I wanted a Long-Haired Miniature Dachshund. Oddly, I remember vividly what inspired this. There was a “wiener dog” that wondered it’s way onto our property around that time, or maybe a year prior, and I fell in love with him. I named him “weenie” and would shamelessly call him so he would come to me and I had such a blast. We ended up finding his owner so that he could go back home, but that began my (still current) obsession with dachshunds. I’ll never forget when my parents caved and bought me Koda--the most handsome Dachshund with a Brindle coat. He is now 11 years old; time truly flies by. When I left for college in 2015, I could not bring him with me. I preceded to move almost every semester because of co-op (aka work), and life was just kind of crazy and unstable(ish). In Spring 2019, I discovered an app called Wag!, which is an app where you can get paid to do dog walks, sittings, boardings, or drop-ins. Just ask Jacob--I ADORED this app. I was obsessed and fell in love with dogs all over again. I took pictures of every dog to remember them.
I have had a certain goal in mind for many years: I wanted to rescue a shelter dog. Until about 6 months ago, I was constantly telling myself that I wouldn’t be able to do that until far in the future. Then something hit me. Why should I keep waiting? Dogs make me so happy, and I am dedicated to making things work out, regardless of the work required. The first thing I did was get the okay from my roommates for my Senior year of college. Then I started shopping for shelter dogs on Petfinder.com. Fast forward to September 12th, when I found Vince online. He was at a shelter about 1 1/2 hours from Cincinnati. Something felt so right about him. I immediately called the shelter to ask for details, and asked Jacob if he would want to take a road trip that Sunday. When I met Vince at the shelter, he instantly ran up to me and started giving me kisses. I ended up bringing him home, and I am so happy he is mine. He is a sweetheart and is just a great little buddy to have around.
Additionally, I have had the goal to start volunteering at a dog shelter. I started doing this a few weeks ago, and I have been LOVING it! Most of the dogs I walk are Pit Bull mixes, and I like to help people realize that this so-called “viscous breed” is just like any dog. They are sweet, love walks, wanna play, and do normal dog things. My favorite dog I’ve walked through Wag! was a Pit Bull, and I plan to adopt one of my own someday (when I have a house and a fenced in backyard for him/her to run and play, of course). Anyway, I also love sharing the photos I take of the adoptable dogs I walk with the hope that I can maybe help them get adopted...?? So yeah, those posts will sound like I’m advertising because I basically am (#noshame). Dog shelters are stressful environments and oftentimes the dogs are completely different in a home environment. It doesn’t hurt to do what I can to help get the dogs out of that stressful environment!
Thank you to all of you for stopping in to look at my page (and for reading til the end of this)! -Jamie
