If you are thinking about getting a puppy, I would be happy to help you find a reputable breeder. Please don’t fund these unethical puppy factories.

In one of the groups I manage, a great many people are buying their puppies from usda certified breeders, never realizing that high-volume breeders require USDA-certification, while small and face-to-face breeders don’t.

Although I would agree that the dog numbers that kick the legislation into play are too strict — the fact remains that pet store puppies come from USDA breeders, and USDA breeders are high volume breeding businesses.

Know where your dog comes from, and remember, your hard-earned dollars should be used to support causes you believe in, not to reward people with questionable ethics.

This is real socialization. ❤️

This is how I socialize my young dogs. I find a quiet spot to sit in with a cup of coffee and something I can share with my dog.

We sit and watch the world go by, sharing that Danish or sandwich or piece of pizza or whatever so that my dogs learn the rest of the world is not nearly as rewarding as I am.

More importantly, they learn the rest of the world has its own business to attend to, and it has nothing whatever to do with us.

When people ask to pet my dog during these training phases, I say, “No, thank you. My dog is in training.” They look at me oddly, but I don’t care.

When they ask me if their dog can say hi to my dog, I say, “No, thank you. My dog is learning to ignore other dogs,” and I smile. They look at me oddly, then look at their own dog pulling on its leash, and look at my dog sitting quietly, and they seem a big chagrined.

However they react is not important. I will never see these people again, but my dog and I will spend years together, calmly enjoying each other’s company.
