Rescued Tails lost one of our very dedicated volunteers this week and we are beyond devastated. Mary DeFord had been with our rescue group since we first organized back in 2006. Over the years, Mary had fostered countless dogs, cats and litters of kittens. When you bring a stray animal into your home, there’s usually an adjustment period. No matter what issues an animal may have had, Mary always met the challenge with patience and without complaint. She would do whatever any animal needed to successfully integrate it into its new environment, and she made it a point to get her young children and their friends involved in the process. Foster animals thrived at Mary’s house while waiting for a home of their own.
Mary was a strong proponent of adopting homeless pets and she was always advocating for the animals in our program. Whenever we would get a new cat or dog, she would try to think of who she knew would be the best fit for it. Because of Mary, several of her friends, family and co-workers at school ended up adopting their new family members from Rescued Tails. Her match-making skills were impressive. An added bonus was that we were able to receive continued updates on our animals throughout the years.
When we started our Rush to Rescue prison foster dog program, Mary was a huge reason for its success. For four years, she would do whatever was needed of her, whether it be going along to meet prospective dogs at animal control, fostering them until a space opened up in the program, transporting dogs to and from the facility for adoption events, or participating in meet-and-greets for potential adopters. Mary especially enjoyed bringing dogs to their new homes as the final part of the adoption process. We couldn’t have run our prison program without Mary’s help, and it was an amazing and valuable experience for all involved.
Mary’s pragmatism and calm personality lent itself well to navigating the often stressful and emotional world of animal rescue. She had such a kind spirit and did all that she could to help make the world a better place. We will miss Mary dearly, but we are certain there were quite a few very heart-warming reunions at the Rainbow Bridge.
