It was so cold at one spot this morning, we had icicles from the scanning fluid! Wrapping up a 2 day trip with 990 goats and 230 ewes. It’s during times like this that I realize my good friend at For flocks sake - Sheep production services probably never has to worry about ice when he’s scanning!

In Oklahoma, there are now 3 confirmed flocks with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. For farm flocks, there are fact sheets available for signs and symptoms of HPAI as well as how to prevent it and increase biosecurity.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in a commercial flock in Adair County.

We've built a scanning calculator (link below) to help you! All you have to do is input your breeding season's starting and ending dates and the rest is automatically calculated.

The ideal scanning window, pre-lambing vaccination date, and expected lambing date are all computed so you can save time and the headache of counting days on your calendar app.

Since this is an open-access sheet, we recommend taking a screenshot when you are done so your dates are not lost when someone else uses it. If you have changes you would like to see, please let us know!

We are always trying to be on the leading edge for our producers. Pneumonia issues are something most of our producers face and we have been working nearly a year to collect samples and find what is causing disease in various locations.

We believe this vaccine holds a lot of promise since it’s specifically targeting the major causes of respiratory disease in sheep. Reach out to us to find out more and to get on our list to order doses.

We loved being a part of the field day this morning! We discussed crucial checkpoints leading up to and after the breeding season for both males and females. We were able to show our mobile equipment off and even performed a breeding soundness exam on a stout Dorper ram. It was made significantly easier with our modified Te Pari USA sheep handler!

Left the house at 4 am to scan nearly 700 ewes being run in confinement near Columbia, MO. This client uses EID tags so the preg scanning data was recorded as well as paint marks for a backup. Will be very interested to see how accurate we were this time. This was our third time at their place and they do a great job managing these highly prolific ewes.

Yesterday, I lectured to Oklahoma State’s sheep science class and gave a lab showcasing pregnancy scanning and its benefits to producers. Thank you Dr. Jerry Fitch for the invite!

In the lecture we covered how our sheep flock at Paragon Ranch got started and how we manage them in a low-input manner. We hit on predator management, fencing, facilities, and marketing/economics. We also covered how our Auto Feeder (Feedtech Auto Feeders USA) is making our operation easier and adding value to lambs. I also highlighted several clients of CVS and we discussed the numerous ways hair sheep are raised and what I’m doing as a veterinarian to help sheep producers be more profitable and productive!

Hate to hear this sound! Thankfully we always pack a bottle jack and impact wrench. We had to unload the scanning crate to reach the spare tire cable but we were back on the road in 20 minutes! Hopefully the rest of the day is uneventful.
