I’m currently wrapping up the last of the 2023/2024 Field and Family Program students! I’ve had a lot of great pups this season and have enjoyed watching them and their families go hunting together for the first time!

I have limited availability for my companion gundog program for 2024/25. If you’re interested in this program, please reach out soon to reserve a spot!

ATTN: Field & Family Program Grads!

is hosting group class on most Wednesdays and Saturdays. These classes would be an ideal source of continued education for handlers and their bird dogs. If you want to learn more or have more opportunities for bird work with your dog, I’d highly recommend attending! These classes are open to anyone but would be a perfect fit for grads of my Field and Family Program who have been started using Grayson’s program.

Classes are $50/dog plus the cost of quail. If you’d like to sign up, you can text me directly!

My favorite shorthair & shotgun (and lab).

Seeing all these fresh grey hairs on my best girl’s precious face hits me with a tinge of sadness, but I know each one represents some adventure together. These past five years of Shorthairs & Shotguns have been one big adventure that I’m grateful to be on. And it wouldn’t be the same without these two by my side.

Redefine yourself often. You don’t have to stay stuck in the story of who you are just because it’s what other people are comfortable with. Follow what feels right, shed your old layers, and embrace the meaningful things that make you feel alive.

Leading up to Blitz’s birthday, I always spend time going back through photos and videos of her. So brace yourself for a ton of throwbacks these next few days 😭😭😭

I always say how Blitz doesn’t have rules, but I guess that’s a lie. She has one rule: she has to participate in photos no matter how much she hates it (and she really hates it). But the rule does not state that she has to enjoy it or look cute. So enjoy her, “ill murder you in your sleep for this,” face 😂.

Today we said, “see ya later 😭” to our friend, Melissa 💔. Melissa stayed with us for the past month and we enjoyed every second of it. I met Melissa in early 2022 when she drove her GSP, Drake, down from PA to do my companion obedience program. We reconnected earlier this year when she picked up Drake from wild bird dog program. When she reached out shortly after and mentioned spending some time in NC this summer, I had no hesitation offering up my guest room! It could have definitely been terrible 😂 but we had THE BEST time! We couldn’t possibly have enjoyed having her and Drake here any more! We did so many fun things from kayaking, hiking with friends, dock diving, training dogs and eating alllll of the best foods. Thankfully we have so much in common from our obsession with our dogs to the foods we love and (most importantly 😅), our bed time and wake up time 😂. Melissa was such a huge help this past month, I greatly appreciate all she did for me (and for loving on my girls so much). Melissa is a lovely human, fantastic cook, great dog owner, and a wonderful friend. Life will not be the same without them. So if everyone can help me talk and Drake into moving here, we would greatly appreciate it 😍. Hope to see you soon!!!

The biggest thanks to everyone to has reached out to check on Blitzy girl this past week! Seriously, I appreciate it so much. It’s been a week since her surgery and she’s doing so, so well! She bounced right back, the incision looks fantastic, and she hasn’t appeared to be bothered by it much at all. Couldn’t have gone smoother!
I haven’t heard back from the biopsy yet but expect to this week. The surgeon believes it was just scar tissue there from where the sac had ruptured before, so fingers crossed it wasn’t anything more than that!

One more week then hopefully she’ll be a free woman again. Send us your best thoughts to make it through week 2 of restricted activity, this could be rough 😂😅

My Blizty girl, my heart, the love of my life, is having surgery this afternoon. Please send her all your best vibes that it goes perfectly well🙏

Last month her vet noticed an abnormality on her right a**l sac. Thanks to sharing his experience with me last winter, I know that a**l sac tumors can be aggressive and spread quickly. I immediately scheduled surgery to have them removed and biopsied. Fingers crossed that surgery goes well today and we get good news back soon from the biopsy 🤞

I desperately wish I could convey to Blitz that the joy she experiences when she gets to carry around one of her favorite critters is how I feel about her being in my life 🥹.

Gov has been such a lovely, lovely guy to work with! It’s so nice to see a shorthair who is high energy without being frantic/frenetic/neurotic. He’s been so easy to live with and enjoyable to work with, he’s been a real breath of fresh air! Good boy, Gov!

Yesterday I saw a video from a well-known trainer on social media that discussed how there is no such thing as “too much exercise” for dogs. This discussion was accompanied by b roll of dogs fetching balls in a variety of places.
I don’t usually get involved in trainer arguments but I need to say something about this.
There ABSOLUTELY is such a thing as too much high-arousal exercise. And you probably don’t want to find out for yourself what happens next.
Activities that tend to *physically* wear dogs out the fastest are also the ones that create the highest excitement levels. Fetching balls. Playing frisbee. Racing around at the dog park. Chasing water from the garden hose. Running next to a bike.
All of these are physical exercise, but they also create intense arousal states. And if you put your dog into high-arousal states repeatedly you better know how to train around this, too.
I have a lot of students who fell into this trap. They got a high-energy dog (a GSD, a herding breed mix of some sort, a retriever etc.).
They figured out that the fastest way to make the dog physically really tired (the tongue-hanging-to-the-floor-kind-of-tired) was by playing chuck-it for half an hour. Or by taking the dog to the dog park every day for a wild romp.
The dog started to crave these arousal states (as programmed in their DNA).
But at the same time, no impulse control training happened. So now we have a dog who knows the fun of adrenaline and who seeks it, without having been taught to listen and regulate when in a state of high excitement.
This dog will start to show other problems. They might get frustrated to the point of redirecting when they cannot access fun immediately. They might be vocalizing or unable to settle and then I get messages that say “My dog just cannot be normal in public”.
If your dog gets to enjoy a high-arousal activity every time they leave the house, they will start to expect (and eventually demand) a high-arousal activity every time.
And this is not fun.
Your dog needs a balance of high-arousal and low-arousal activities. Furthermore, the more high-arousal activities your dog has, the more you have to balance these with impulse control training. It’s not fair to make our dogs crazy without teaching them the skills to un-crazy ;)
“Exercise” can have four quadrants:
- Low-arousal, not physically demanding (sniff walks)
- Low-arousal, physically demanding (hiking)
- High-arousal, not physically demanding (excited waiting while another dog works)
- High-arousal, physically demanding (fetching)

Make sure you are aware which type of exercise you are providing for your dog, and try to reach a balance that works for your dog.
If you are unhappy with your dog’s arousal level or impulse control in daily life, look at whether this is amplified by the type of exercise you are providing.
