Dogs aren’t just vulnerable to cold temperatures. You should also consider the following factors:

• Cloud cover ☁️
Temperatures tend to lower on cloudy days as clouds block the sun’s warming rays

• Dampness 🌧️
Fog, rain, snow, sleet, and walking through puddles or streams dampen your dog’s fur, making them feel cold even on mild days.

• Wind chill ♒︎
On cold days, a brisk breeze flowing through your dog’s fur affects their ability to regulate their body temperature.

• Frozen water 🧊
Frozen water poses a dangerous risk, as the ice may not be strong enough to support your dog’s weight, causing them to fall through into freezing waters below.

• Dog’s activity 𓃥
A dog running around or walking briskly will generate more body heat than a dog slowly walking.

Meet Kena, arguably the world's sweetest german shepherd (just ask her, she'll tell you all about it while giving all the kisses too!) 🐾💋
This lovely girl came in recently for her annual well pet exam and was thrilled to pose for her photoshoot. She didn't mind her vaccines or a quick blood draw for her annual heartworm test either- as long as the loves and snacks kept coming.

With the pandemic forcing many people to work from home and spend an increasing amount of time at the house for the past year, there’s no question that we’re going to see a rise in separation anxiety with our pets as a result. If not already, I’m sure many of you will begin seeing these issues as we are allowed more freedoms outside of the house in the next few months.

With the surge in separation anxiety in both adult dogs and new pandemic puppies who have never known a life outside of quarantine, here are a few tips to help with the transition ~

➝ If you haven’t already, start kennel training immediately, and USE IT! This is an essential and lifelong skill.

➝ Leave the house quickly and calmly. Cannot stress this enough: Saying goodbye 10 times is unnecessary. Drawing it out only increases your dogs stress and supports their belief that your leaving is a big deal.

➝ Make your exit a positive experience. If your dog has a favorite treat, toy, bone, etc.. start only giving it when you’re leaving. For example, if your dog loves Kong filled toys, place it in the kennel with them before leaving then remove it shortly once you get home again. This way, the item is only associated with alone/kennel time.

➝ Make your entrance a positive but non exciting one as well. By teaching and enforcing self-control of not acting on strong emotional impulses, it starts training the dog about self regulation. If you are immediately and continuously “hyping” your dog up the second you come home, this doesn’t help in teaching your dog how to handle their stress and control their strong impulses.

This is the entire basis of how dogs are properly trained. By both reinforcement and punishment, we can both increase and decrease behaviors. 🐾

➝ contrary to popular belief:
Punishment is not always “bad” or negative and reinforcement is not always “good” or positive.

➝ Operant conditioning, is a method of learning that employs rewards and punishments for behavior. Through operant conditioning, an association is made between a behavior and a consequence (whether negative or positive) for that behavior.

This is a 2 week or 1 month comprehensive puppy course focused on introducing the basics to your pup.

Don’t skip the steps to training your dog to be reliable off-leash. More structure = more freedoms! ❤️🐾
