A big shout-out to Jonathan's Reptiles for helping me deck out my morphed axolotl enclosure! Kirby now calls home an 18" x 18" terrarium, complete with forest moss, top soil/coir/drainage mix substrate, two hides, and a handi-cable bathing area.

Kirby also has a new buddy, thanks to Northern Axolotls ... stay tuned!

These Wilds are pet-only, as they came to me in April as surrenders, from a clutch locally produced by accident with pet-store animals.

These guys deserve amazing homes to match their amazing gills, and trust me - they don't stay still! Swimming around is their favorite hobby, when they're not eating me out of house and home. Until I'm positive on their genders I would rather only release one to each family, unless if you're prepared to set up multiple tanks.

I want to spotlight a very special small business today. This is Blessed Cake Creations , the amazing cottage law baker who created the custom cake which was a shining star of my husband and I's vow renewal.

The cake was a glorious spice cake with buttercream cream cheese frosting, and I couldn't have asked for anything more... but maybe an axolotl, but hubby said no axolotls on the cake 😂

The cake was moist and delicious, and had a spongy yet fall-apart-in-your-mouth texture, and the icing completely topped it off with a warm cinnamon roll-style sweetness that was to die for.

GFP is such a cool gene - it's not the most intuitive thing, but as GFP stands for Green Fluorescent Protein, the proteins within their bodies will fluoresce (glow) green under UV light! This means all of their organ and muscle tissue will glow. Even their brains 🧠

It is important to understand that much of axolotls' regenerative ability would cease after metamorphosis, just as a frog or typical salamander loses its 'tadpole immunity'. There are extensive cartilaginous properties of their body which exists for... well, whatever reason evolution decided upon.

However, studies (like the one linked above) seem to believe that the reasoning for their very cartilage-rich bodies is due to preparation for metamorphosis, as well as deeply connected to their stem cell production, to which they likely have to thank for their regenerative abilities.

Since axolotls' regenerative abilities slow as they age, and their bodies begin to store more calcium within their skeletal structure, it is certainly important to be aware of the hardness of the water you provide for them to draw their minerals from. I personally recommend a minimum GH of 8°, which is 8 dGH or a touch higher than 140 ppm.

Acidic water is also dangerous for these alkaline creatures, with 7 being the lowest pH for my recommendation.

Eggs laid laid on 3/22 - 23rd/24th from a gorgeous big GFP black gilled dirty Lucy named Karma and a lovely Mel Axanthic boy named Conner. We are guaranteed to have both GFP and regular Mels, Lucies, Mel Lucies and hope for a slue of Albino mixes as well, all het White, Mel, and Axanthic.

Mom: Karma, a GFP black gilled dirty Leucistic, het Mel and possible for Albino. She is a bit over 4 years old, hatched from Northern Axolotl.
Her mom was Biddy, a GFP black gill dirty Lucy, het Mel and Albino, (Her parents were a very dirty lucy and a GFP split mosaic)
Karma’s dad was Drogo a GFP light spotty Mel, het White. He was hatched at Northern Axolotls but bred by Michelle Demers. His mom was a dirty Lucy and dad a GFP Mel.

Dad: Conner, Mel Axanthic, het Albino, White, and has possible Copper hets. Hatched 1/15/23
His mom, Cool Whip, Mel Axanthic Albino het White with possible hets for Hypo and Copper. Her mother was Kevin, an all het MAC from The Mottled Lotl. (her mother is Strawberry an all het Lucy and her dad is Stark an all het Mel from Stress in a Box.
Conner’s Dad, Dee Snider, Mel Axanthic Leucistic, het Copper from Hogs and Lotls. His mother is Roxanne, a light Axanthic het Albino from Sandy Brown. (Parents an Albino and a GFP Axanthic). Dee Snider’s Dad was Leviathan, a light Copper Axanthic het Mel from Kloudnine Axolotls. His mom was a Wild from Michael Dommer (mom Lucy and dad Copper). His dad, Mel Copper from Twin Cities.
