Asher graduated! 🐾🎓

He no longer pulls on the leash and has learned how to settle when asked. He also now understands that every dog he sees is not there for him to rush to play with.

Asher is doing fantastic remaining in a calm state of mind. Not an easy task for a young exuberant golden retriever.
It’s important to teach young dogs how to settle when we ask them to.

Many people ask us why we teach the “place” command. 😊

What is the "Place" command?

"Place" is what we consider "duration work", where the dog is to remain in a finite place we designate.

Why is this so important?

For starters, most of the clients we see are for behavioral challenges and issues they're struggling with; which involves a great deal of "state of mind" work. "State of mind" is fuel for any given behavior and refers to a dog's level of arousal and excitement. *Calm* and balanced is the ideal state of mind, and is the birthplace of good, sound responses (vs. reactions ~ which are emotionally charged, excitement induced, more adrenalized responses), grounded choices, focus, and attention.

We often liken the "place" command to "canine meditation", as the benefits of it are truly amazing ~ especially for edgy, nervous, anxious, reactive, head-strong, sensitive, etc. types. "Place" teaches the value of calm, stillness, and simple presence, reinforces impulse control, and also teaches a dog to become more of a spectator and observer~ as opposed to an active participant in everything going on around them.
This can be quite relieving for a lot of dogs who take on the pressure of trying to control and manipulate what's going on around them all of the time...

A dog's state of mind is constantly fluctuating.
When we're able to control and manage the mind, we're able to control and manage the rest of the body. *The body always follows the mind.*

There are several moments throughout the day we can take advantage of and use for training "place": when we're cooking, on the phone, welcoming a visitor inside the home, working at our desk, etc. Eventually, "place" begins to translate into "calm on cue", which is always nice.

This being said, it's unfair for us to expect calm when we're not meeting our dogs' daily energy needs. Not providing an outlet for them to channel and burn off excess energy. This is a *non-negotiable* and an absolute must for any dog, for their mental, emotional, and physical health; and will impact their ability to reach a state of calm and balance.

In utilizing "place" for several hours a day, like meditation does for humans, we begin to alter the dog's emotional and mental state, followed directly, of course, by the physical state. The added bonus of this is most of the problematic behaviors we see start to fade and/or significantly decrease in intensity.

Anxiety decreases.
Emotional stability improves.
The mind sharpens.
The nervous system resets.
The body relaxes and releases.
Security increases.
Immune function improves.
Impulse control increases.

There are several benefits to the "place" command; not just for the dog- but for all who share space with the dog. "Place" isn't just a command, it's a pleasure; impacting overall quality of life in the best of ways.😊💪
