When we decided to keep Topanga, I had to relearn many things about what it's like to have a pet pig in the house. Here are a few of my takeaways:
1. The teaching period is long and can be frustrating. They need watched every second like an infant. They will chew on anything - cords, buttons, paper, books, blankets, pillows, baskets, boxes, etc.
2. Always correct unacceptable behavior.
Don't be afraid to raise your voice with a stern NO and redirect them. Research Move the Pig Technique. We use it every day.
3. Never give in to squealing!!! Never!
Never! Never! It's hard because their squeals can be ear piercing. But it's important that they do not associate squealing with getting what they want.
Stick to your guns and it will pay off!!
4. Make sure they know they are at the bottom of the totem pole! Each family member is in charge. They have to listen to each person that comes into the house.
Teaching tricks helps with this. Always make them work for treats. Harness training also helps.
5. Do not start anything when they are young that you don't want to do forever.
For example, sleeping in your bed, laying on the couch, or rooting on your body. It's important to set rules and stick to them.
If you have any questions about these tips, feel free to ask in the comments. If you're dealing with something particular, chances are high that others are dealing with the same thing.
