Just a few of the meals and snacky plates we shared while Ruby’s brother was visiting from Boston. He really wanted to have the Southern culinary experience, and he loved everything. Fried catfish, fried okra, and fried grits. Twice smoked ham, collards, black eyed peas, and cornbread with our own chow chow. Snacky plate with our pickled okra, pickled garlic, and garlic dill pickles. Featuring scuppernoggs, which he had never had before.Chris’ Aunt’s delicious breakfast casserole with sausage, local eggs, plenty of cheese, and our homegrown bell peppers.Snacky plate with our sweet gherkins, vampire slayer pickles, and spicy pickled okra.

It's a lot of work keeping our home cozy aand warm using wood from our land, but it's worth it.
We shared this video on our Youtube channel, and we got a really good question asking about the amount of non-renewable resources that human beings use. One thing I don't love about the short video format is that there's no way to offer context in a 19 second video, so we wanted to include some more details in this post about where the wood comes from and why we are usinig wood to heat the house.
Our home does not have built-in electric heat (no HVAC) but it does have a very efficient wood stove. So we are limited in our heating options, and we do need to stay warm in winter.
Our property is a heavily wooded 6 acres, and this particular tree shown in the video was profoundly rotten at the bottom, and leaning dangerously towards falling on the house, so it had to come down for safety reasons. Rather than wasting that resource, we cut it up into rounds and then into firewood. So far this winter, we have only burned about half of that tree, and it looks like it will be more than enough to get us through the whole winter and probably part of next year too. Our neighbors also asked us to help them remove some wood from their property from trees that fell naturally, so we have that on deck for when we need it.
So I want to be clear that we aren't deforesting the land or taking out healthy trees just to burn them. Part of trying to live a more sustainable life and reducing our impact on the environment is making tough choices, and the choice we have made here is to use the downed wood and the wood from this one dangerous tree to heat our home. We are at peace with that, and we hope hearing a little bit more of the backstory helps you to understand why we have made this choice as well.
Life feeds on life, life requires resources to sustain itself, and it's up to us to make the best choices that we can to sustain ourselves while protecting, sustaining, and renewing the r
We ♥️ our bees!!! Whenever it’s above 50 degrees and not raining, the bees are out foraging. But there isn’t much blooming to sustain them, so we feed their own honey back to them from the frames we extracted. They do an amazing job cleaning up the frames, and not a drop of honey is wasted.
