Patience is key when it comes to working with dogs, especially behavior cases 🙌

We've been working with Dex for about two years now. He was a very anxious boy when we met him due to a pretty rough first experience with grooming. 🥺

It's taken a lot of time, energy, patience and understanding of behavior work for us to see progress but today was a MAJOR breakthrough for Dex. He was able to remain COMPLETELY calm comfortable and cooperative throughout the entire process. 🐾🥹

Behavior work is hard, but it's so deeply rewarding when you see dogs finally feeling safe and secure during the grooming process. Good job today Dex, we love you buddy! 💚

Being a cooperative care dog groomer means having comprehensive knowledge and understanding of good handling skills 🐾

Tarz has a bad back that makes it difficult for him to stand during grooming. It's also very hard for him to lift a rear leg for his groomer to shave his back legs or tummy without support.

With physically capable and otherwise healthy dogs, most groomers will ask a dog to stand for the entire process and lift a leg up while standing so the groomer can easily reach all areas. ✂️

For Tarz, that's just too much to ask of him and causes him physical discomfort. In order to provide the most comfortable care for Tarz, his groomer has him sit on the opposite hip from the one his groomer needs and comfortably kicks out the leg his groomer is wanting to work on rather than standing for the process.

While it may be slightly more challenging for the groomer to work this way, the comfort of the dog in our care should always come first. Make sure your groomer has great handling skills and cooperates with your dog, rather than forcing dogs through painful and uncomfortable situations just to "get the job done" 🙌

Finding a groomer you and your dog love & trust & sticking with them is not just convenient, but can be crucial. Here's why:

This is Bert the Scottie. He was diagnosed with diabetes about 5 months ago, and in a matter of about 6 weeks has gone almost completely blind as a result of the diabetes. 💔

Bert has been a Canine Cosmuttology client for almost 4 years now so he knows his groomers voice and routine very well by now. He knows the smells of our products as we do not change them. He knows the sounds of our tools and how they feel. And he knows the common cue words his groomer uses to prepare him for procedures such as asking him "are you ready?" to let him know we're about to proceed with something.

"The Name Game" is a common technique used by fear free and behavior specialist groomers alike to put a name or "cue" to a tool or procedure that the dog is able to understand and predict what is about to happen to them during the grooming process. For example, the groomer will name a slicker brush for the dog and may say "are you ready? We're going to brush" and the dog within a few grooming appointments learns what the "brush" is and what to expect.

This becomes crucial in cases like blindness. Bert won't have to be afraid and worry about what we're going to be doing now that he suddenly can't see during the grooming process because he knows many of the tools and procedures by name now and knows the order in which they are done for his individual comfort level. Beyond that, he knows his groomer loves him deeply, that he can trust her, and that she will respect and pay attention to his subtle body language cues of discomfort or fear.

When you find a groomer you and your dog love and trust, rebook and stay with them for your dogs sake. It means more to your dog than you know. 💚🩶🖤

Canine Cosmuttology is more than just a haircutting service for dogs. We are Cooperative Care Specialists and Fear Free Certified Professionals combining training and grooming into one experience. 🙌

Here we have a demo of "The Bucket Game" with Spin, the mini goldendoodle. 🐾 Spin is one of our more fearful pups but has made TREMENDOUS progress over the past three years using Fear Free and Cooperative Care training techniques during the grooming process, such as The Bucket Game.

How the bucket game works: 🪣
The groomer starts by putting a pile or "bucket" of treats in front of the dog just out of reach.
The goal is to have the dog excited and focused on the "bucket". All dog behaviors work through the ABC's. (Antecedent: what happens before the behavior, Behavior: what the actual behavior is, and the Consequence: what happens after the behavior) With each nail, we use a cue as the Antecedent prior to trimming the nail, so you will hear the groomer in the video say "ready, and" just before trimming the nail to let the dog know the clipping of the nail is about to happen so they can prepare themselves. When the dog is holding still and telling us they are okay with us proceeding (ideally staring at the bucket) we then clip the nail with the dog ideally remaining calm for the clipping, which is the Behavior part of this training session. We then reward the dog with a yummy treat immediately after which is the Consequence for the dogs good behavior. 🦴

The bucket game is a Cooperative Care training technique, giving the dog freedom of choice and participation in their grooming experience. You will notice in the video, Spin is not hooked into the Hound Hook on the grooming arm and is thus free to turn around and back away if she isn't comfortable proceeding with the behavior.
You will see a few times where her FAS (Fear, Anxiety, and Stress) level rises and she needs a moment to return to calm before proceeding with the behavior.

Canine Cosmuttology has put in countless hours of education to help the dogs in our care learn to have a calm, comfortable and cooperative experience with us. Our techniques are what set us apart from many other groomers. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about Fear Free Training including tips and tricks unrelated to grooming, please don't hesitate to ask us for resources. We love educating pet parents and pet professionals alike. 🤓

We found this poor little stray almost getting hit by a car crossing the highway in Shelley yesterday 💔 she was in horrible condition so we took her home and got her groomed before having Bingham county sheriff's department come and get her so she would at least be comfortable while she waits for her owners or to find a new home. She was the sweetest pup and we were so glad she let us catch her and we were able to help her! ❤️🐾

I wanted to take a moment and thank all of our incredible clients for being so patient with me as I have been changing up our work schedule in order for me to go back to school. You all truly are like family to David and I and it means the world to us that you all are so supportive of me furthering my education in this industry. My life's passion is taking care of dogs both mentally and physically and taking this program will help me better understand how to care for your pets well being during the grooming process. I had my orientation tonight and it went great! Looking forward to this journey to MGBS!

A client of ours still has two mini golden doodle puppies they are needing to find a home for. They are both males, 3 months old, non shedding coats and have had their first appointment with us already. They will likely be about 20lbs when full grown. The lighter male is very sweet, easy going and slightly more reserved. The darker male is very outgoing, brave and tenacious but also very sweet. They are just wanting them to find good homes asap and have asked anyone interested to make an offer. Feel free to PM or text me for details. Thanks!
