Humane Society of West Alabama HSWA is a no-kill, all-volunteer shelter in Tuscaloosa, AL, helping rescue and rehome animals.

Founded in 1971, The Humane Society of West Alabama, is a no-kill animal rescue organization run entirely by volunteers. We rely on donations from citizens and our fundraisers to keep our two shelters open because we receive no monetary government grants or help from national organizations like HSUS. Our Cat Shelter is cage-free and houses anywhere between 20 and 50 cats at any given time. Our Dog

Shelter has large runs and two yards for doggy playgroups, plus more dogs in foster homes. We help reunite pet parents with their lost animals by posting their information on our page in our "Lost and Found" album. And, when our limited resources permit, we try to help with emergency vet bills when needed. We do not have the authority to seize or investigate cases of animal cruelty or roaming animals; please contact Animal Control or the police.

Labor Day Pet Safety Edition! 🐾🇺🇸

It’s the last hurrah of summer! We wanted to pop in with some important reminders to keep your furry friends safe this Labor Day:

🌞 Beat the Heat – Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and shade. Never leave them in a parked car, even for a few minutes.

🍔 Watch Your Plate – Holiday favorites like onions, chocolate, alcohol, corn on the cob, chip bags, and grapes can be dangerous or even deadly for pets. Stick to pet-safe treats!

🔥 Grill Safety – Keep pets away from hot grills and lighter fluid or charcoal. Burns and chemical ingestion are serious risks.

🎆 Party Time Prep – If things get noisy or chaotic (or fireworks are around), provide your pet with a quiet, safe place to relax and feel secure.

Let’s make sure everyone — two-legged and four-legged — has a fun and safe Labor Day! ❤️🐶

Our 2 black cats with a little white tuffs to add some flare.

We are still wondering why Miss Hobbs doesn't have her own queendom. All she needs is someone to talk to, a kitchen faucet, and her towels (yes, she comes with her own).

Nox is our girl who needs a special family who can understand her cues. We believe she was abused which has made her confused on our pets and love. Nox would be a great only cat for someone (adult only) who has the patience to let her learn to trust.

Happy Tails to Daisy!🩷

One of our sweet “flower girls”, Daisy was adopted by the most wonderful couple who recently celebrated the first anniversary of Daisy’s Gotcha Day!

Here is what Daisy’s family has to say about her:
“Happy Gotcha Day, sweet baby girl! One year ago today, this beautiful, sweet, energetic puppy chose to come home with us. Raising a puppy has its challenges, but Daisy has been worth it all. She is funny and full of life, and wins the hearts of all she meets. She just wants to love and be loved, and we’re so happy she’s part of our family! 🥰 We love you, baby girl!”

Rose attends Bark University at Hot Diggity Dog Camp twice a week, where she not only learns new skills like agility, tricks, and nose work, but also gets plenty of time to play and socialize with other pups! She’s been making so many doggy friends and loving every minute of it.

Look how well our Rose is doing with her training!

Twice a week Rose attends Bark University at Hot Diggity Dog Camp where she trains in agility, tricks, and nose work, plus other skills. Rose also gets to work with the puzzles and has social time with some of the other pups! She is killing it!

Our sweet Sadie needs a temporary foster home ASAP! 🐾💕

Sadie is currently undergoing heartworm treatment until September and needs a quiet and peaceful environment where she can stay calm and rested. Sadie gets along wonderfully with other dogs, but due to her current condition, she does need to be the only dog in the house as she needs to stay calm and relaxed until her heartworm treatment is complete. She does well in a crate, so you can have peace of mind when you're not home. If you're interested in temporarily fostering Sadie, please fill out an application on our website.
