I rescued my soul mate from the pound when he was just a pup. His name was Davis. I fed him the food that I could afford most of the time. Sometimes I couldn’t afford dog food and he ate whatever I could give him. I wanted to give him the best. I watched the commercials, I fell for the lies. When he was around 8, he developed severe allergies. He was itching like crazy, lost almost all of his fur, and had a smelly, waxyness to his skin that was so bad, I didn’t even want to pet him. I took him to OSU veterinary school, they put him on a kangaroo based food. It didn’t help. I started doing my own research. Through trial and error, and alot of reading, I learned he had a severe allergy to potato starch. Even the starch in sweet potatoes would set him off. Once his body digested the starch, it would turn to yeast and attack his skin. I eventually got all of his fluffy fur back, itching was gone, except for the standard butt scratch, and he was back to his cranky old man self. He lived to be 14 years old. It shattered my world when I had to make the fateful decision at the vets office, but I know it was for the best and his last years were as healthy and as happy as he could be. His legacy is that, because of his issues, I am able to now help many other dogs and their parents to make healthy decisions. I’ve learned how to read dog food labels, and the laws regarding how the food is labeled. I’ve learned how ingredients affect dogs, good and bad. And I’ve developed some treats that I would love to share with every 4 legged friend. Specifically the Salmon and Flaxseed cookies. They are targeted for their skin and coat. There are also Pumpkin and coconut flour cookies with parsley. Pumpkin is good for a dogs belly and is highly recommended to use when transitioning between food. My peanut butter cookies are the least “healthy” of my treats. They are still limited in ingredients, and dogs that have no dietary restrictions will love them! I also have sweet potato and apple chips that are baked and am always working on new treats. I made a birthday cake for K-9 Karson the year he was found after being lost all winter, and can make specialized Pup Cakes for you too, upon request.
I hope to help educate other in canine nutrition and help our furry friends live the happiest life they can.
