This little gal with the big personality and her friend need people who will help tame them. They have really come a long way and are less scared. They just need to turn that corner where they aren’t hissing anymore.
The NK AP shelter is closed today bc it’s the Juneteenth holiday. But there will be someone there early for feeding/care of the animals.
There are also 2 small mostly black male and female kittens who are friendly, they just need wonderful homes!
Message us if you’re interested. Pics in comments.
There’s also a new, very tiny, litter of 4, buffs and grays, who need an experienced kitten foster home to help them grow and socialize, available to a foster home on Monday.
Call NK AP at 804-966-9500 with any questions.
Thanks and please share!
Adorable female, tabby / calico kitten at the NK AP shelter for adoption. She has been dewormed once and given a flea/tick treatment. You will need to get her spayed when she’s old enough and return proof.
She’s about 2-2.5 months old and a bit over 2 pounds of precious! Check out her unique markings!
She’s sweet, playful, and if you’re looking to add a new kitty friend to your family, she fits the bill!
Call the NK AP shelter tomorrow to meet her at 804-966-9500.
Looking for a dog-friendly, affectionate playmate for your own pup or pack? Sadie Mae is a sweet, 2 1/2 year old, 45 lb, spayed hound. She loves being with her foster mom and two foster dog siblings - an 11 year old male golden and an 8 year old female lab mix. Adoption events and shelter settings were a lot for this little girl for her to be herself, but really all she wants to do is to rest her head in your lap (maybe climb in it, a little), or to roll over in her donut bed for a belly rub. She may shy away from new people at first, and while she loves to be outside, she is a house dog -- through and through -- and will be your shadow, if you let her.
Sadie has been in her foster home since early April, after months in various shelters, and an unknown history prior to that. Sadie would do best in a multi-dog household as long as the other dogs enjoy some rough and tumble play. She loves her donut bed, all plush toys, and making sure she knows where you are.
Sadie has made a lot of progress with impulse control with food, toys, and play. She now sits in one spot waiting for her food instead of jumping, barking, and bouncing off walls and dogs from excitement. She now reads dog body language better, especially with interpreting whether the other dog is amenable to play. However, once play is initiated, it is game on.
Supervised play is recommended until Sadie learns to dial it back a bit. Sadie knows exactly how to play with plush toys, but she will try to steal toys out of her dog siblings' mouths. She responds to dog-to-dog corrections in the moment, but she can be persistent.
Sadie is not crated and has done very well in the house alone with her two foster (dog) siblings. She has only chewed on her toys (and the toy bins, to be fair). She voluntarily sleeps in her soft bedding in her open-door crate, or in her donut bed, while her human is away, and at night. As her bond with her foster mom grows, she barks a bit when foster mom leaves th

Help! The NK AP Shelter needs to move dogs out!
Sadly, some are not dog friendly and can’t live with other dogs. We realize those dogs are difficult to help and to place, but please share with everyone you know who may not have dogs, but may want to own one special dog.
They had to take in 4 new dogs today, that we can’t talk about.
Wonderful news though, Nova, the young male pit mix, was adopted today and SADIE MAE left for an excellent foster home where she is already thoroughly enjoying life outside the clink. (We will share some pics tomorrow.)
We would LOVE to help DICE! Medium sized hound mix, so thin, probably for all the stress of the kennels.
Please let us know if you can foster him!
Here’s an adorable video of Sadie after her bath, but before she left. 😍😍

Scooby is still wishing and hoping for a foster home.
Scooby, 9-10 year old, Korean Jindo, he was adopted at the shelter and returned after a month, because he ran away 3 times, they didn’t have a fence, and the adopter couldn’t work it out.
Scooby was eating some people food in the home and refused to eat kibble. He came back thinner and he still needs to be neutered (he is also cryptorchid). Scooby is now successfully eating and doing well on The Farmers Dog food.
We would love to place him in an experienced foster home, so we can give him time to de-stress and help him gain weight. We are waiting on results from his senior bloodwork; we will update here once we get them. ***Update: he’s now being treated for Lymes.***
We’ve heard he isn’t good with other dogs from some, but others have said he may be able to get along with female dogs. We know he is non-reactive to other dogs. We would need a foster who’s able to separate him temporarily and leash walk (he’s a DREAM on leash) or rotate yard use.
Please reach out in the comments or message us, if you’re interested in fostering Scooby or have any questions.
If you haven’t fostered before, please go to newkenthumane.org and complete the foster application online.
Thanks and please share for Scoobs! ❤️❤️

This gorgeous female Lab comes off stray hold today. She’s still shy but has been making progress. She seems to light up around dogs and get more confidant.
Please call if you have any questions or are interested in adopting her. NK AC at 804-966-9500.
Shelter Adoptions are still sponsored, the next 4, but we could still use more adoption sponsors at $20 per dog/cat. Thanks and please share!
This beautiful, female hound was hit by a car last week.
The driver stopped and called for help. She was stray, no collar, no chip, no ID, in the 6800’s block of New Kent Hwy, Quinton, VA.
She went to the vet, he doesn’t feel anything’s broken, but she’s sore and limping. She was given pain meds and told to rest. She improves a bit each day, but her stray hold is up tomorrow, no one has called looking for her, and we would really love to find a caring foster home for her.
The NK AC shelter is very full of dogs needing help. Are you able to help us help this one?
Please comment below or message us if you’re able to foster this very sweet hound.
Thanks and please share!
