This little gal with the big personality and her friend need people who will help tame them. They have really come a long way and are less scared. They just need to turn that corner where they aren’t hissing anymore.

The NK AP shelter is closed today bc it’s the Juneteenth holiday. But there will be someone there early for feeding/care of the animals.

There are also 2 small mostly black male and female kittens who are friendly, they just need wonderful homes!

There’s also a new, very tiny, litter of 4, buffs and grays, who need an experienced kitten foster home to help them grow and socialize, available to a foster home on Monday.

Sadie Mae is a sweet, 2 1/2 year old, 45 lb, spayed hound. She lives with her foster mom and two foster dog siblings - an 11 year old male golden and an 8 year old female lab mix.

Sadie would do best in a multi-dog household as long as the other dogs enjoy some rough and tumble play.

She loves her donut bed, all plush toys, and making sure she knows where you are.

Sadie has made a lot of progress with impulse control with food, toys, and play. She now sits in one spot waiting for her food instead of jumping, barking, and bouncing off walls and dogs from excitement. She now reads dog body language better, especially with interpreting whether the other dog is amenable to play.

Sadie knows exactly how to play with plush toys, but she will try to steal toys out of her dog siblings' mouths. She responds to dog-to-dog corrections in the moment, but she can be persistent.

Sadie is not crated and has done very well in the house alone with her two foster dog siblings. She has only chewed on her toys.

She voluntarily sleeps in her soft bedding in her open-door crate, or in her donut bed, while her human is away, and at night. Sadie barks a bit when foster mom leaves the house, but after five minutes, foster mom can see on the camera that Sadie is in her crate or in her donut bed.

Sadie is a sweet, soft-eared girl, who is so happy to see you. She will sit in a heartbeat for food and she has not counter-surfed since the first few days. That said, with new environments may come new opportunities, so best to be diligent.

Sadie is young and energetic, she is a fantastic, loving dog, who deserves her own family.

Where are our older, crooked tail, Bulldog LOVERS?!?!

Meet Bambi!
Her elderly rescue mommy has to go into long term care to recover from a sudden fall. Now Bambi needs a new home.

Bambi is a rescue from a Nevada Bulldog Rescue who moved to VA with her family years ago.

She is microchipped and spayed. Her vet records say 4 yrs old, but we think she may be a bit older. Bambi lived in a home with a buddy Bulldog, who passed away.

She had a loving home, she’s very cuddly, Bambi was used to having a doggie door and a fenced in yard. She’s so lonely at the shelter.

The 2nd photo is a gorgeous Calico, Abby, so friendly and sweet. She was an indoor cat and that’s the type of home she’s looking for.

Four, 3 month old, kittens and their 2 parents, need to be relocated from a home in Providence Forge within the next week or so.

We will be working on getting them spayed and neutered. Here are pictures of 2 of them.

The loving owner, who fed two cats, that quickly turned into 6, recently passed away and the family cannot afford to care for them.

The black and white one, pictured first, is spicy and will most likely need a safe, location, without too much human interaction. The female in the second picture, is calmer and may be able to be tamed.

Small dog in need of a new home!

Clinton was adopted, but it’s ultimately not a good fit.
Children are visiting regularly and he’s not a fan of all their busy activities and the coming and going.

Clinton is great with dogs his size or smaller, he has not been around larger dogs, so we don’t know about those. He should not be placed in a home with cats.

He is a young, 9 years, 21 lbs, vaccinated, microchipped, hw negative and on preventions, very sweet and loving, but he needs a quiet home with 1-2 people, max.

He will bond strongly and sleep in your bed. His owner says he was perfect with his house training, and does wear a male wrap, when you can’t watch him.

Clinton had never met children, his owners were elderly and he had a quiet life and that’s what he needs.

So, please help us find him a new home without children / grand children visiting often.

Clinton can be put in another room if, for example, grand children are visiting occasionally, but he doesn’t prefer this.

Please message us or comment below if you are interested in meeting him.

We’d like to help place him as quickly as possible, but to a better matched home.

They have both blossomed in foster care and are ready to meet their new families. They are fostered in the Lanexa area.

They are 7 weeks old and eating on their own. They have been dewormed once and flea/tick treated.

The last 2 pictures are of new shelter residents, their owner passed away recently and the family couldn’t keep them.

Abby is the Torti/Calico and John Wayne is the large, tuxedo, Maine C**n mix. They are 4-5 yrs old, spayed and neutered, and they were indoor only cats.

You do have to live in New Kent County or an adjoining county, in order to adopt the kittens and you must get the kitten sterilized by the time they’re 6 months old the old and return proof.

Bring a carrier, if possible.

Looking for a dog-friendly, affectionate playmate for your own pup or pack?

Sadie Mae is a sweet, 2 1/2 year old, 45 lb, spayed hound who’s looking for you.

She may shy away from new people at first, and while she loves to be outside, she is a house dog -- through and through -- and will be your best shadow, if you let her.

Sadie has been in her foster home since early April, after months in various shelters, and an unknown history prior to that.

Sadie would do best in a multi-dog household as long as the other dogs enjoy some rough and tumble play. She loves her donut bed, all plush toys, and making sure she knows where you are.

Sadie has made a lot of progress with impulse control with food, toys, and play. She now sits in one spot waiting for her food instead of jumping, barking, and bouncing off walls and dogs from excitement. She now reads dog body language better, especially with interpreting whether the other dog is amenable to play. However, once play is initiated, it is game on.

Supervised play is recommended until Sadie learns to dial it back a bit. Sadie knows exactly how to play with plush toys, but she will try to steal toys out of her dog siblings' mouths. She responds to dog-to-dog corrections in the moment, but she can be persistent.

Sadie is not crated and has done very well in the house alone with her two foster (dog) siblings. She has only chewed on her toys (and the toy bins, to be fair). She voluntarily sleeps in her soft bedding in her open-door crate, or in her donut bed, while her human is away, and at night.

As her bond with her foster mom grows, she barks a bit when foster mom leaves the house, but after five minutes, foster mom can see on the camera that Sadie is in her crate or in her donut bed.

Sadie’s foster would have said 100% house-trained (had a perfect two week stretch) until the routine was changed up a little, so Sadie is probably 90% house-trained for #1, but 100% house trained, since the first day, for #2.

We are working with her confidence in public places, like New Town, meeting new people without shying away, and not being scared of loud passing vehicles while on walks. It's a lot for this little girl to process, but she is great in the car, and she accompanied her dog brother to his vet appointment, like a champ.

At home, you would never know she was shy, with the exception of unexpected, loud noises. However, we can now use the ice dispenser without Sadie jumping out of her skin. She has learned to be comfortable with many new noises such as the freezer drawer being opened and the coffee bean grinder. Accidentally dropping Tupperware from the fridge will send her scurrying. Oops.

Sadie is a sweet, soft-eared girl, who is so happy to see you. She will need more basic training, but has shown no inclination to jump the fence or to dig under. She will sit in a heartbeat for food and she has not counter-surfed since the first few days. That said, with new environments may come new opportunities, so best to be diligent.

Sadie is simply young and energetic but she is a fantastic, loving dog, who deserves her own family.

Goats Milk, donations needed!

One of our local wildlife rehabbers needs Goats Milk for feeding 9 fawns. She’s going through 2 gallons a day!

It should be in jugs, fresh or frozen, and not pasteurized.

Adorable female, tabby / calico kitten at the NK AP shelter for adoption. She has been dewormed once and given a flea/tick treatment. You will need to get her spayed when she’s old enough and return proof.

She’s about 2-2.5 months old and a bit over 2 pounds of precious! Check out her unique markings!

Please Help! A really fantastic dog needs your help!

Ryder, an Aussie x, needs a great home as the only pet. He’s at the NK AP shelter and needs your attention and many shares to get out!

He can be calm and well behaved around other dogs, but he shouldn’t live with them. He’s shown he can take cheap shots and that doesn’t sit well with other dogs.

He also needs a home with no small children as he will herd them, older children should be fine.

He does know some basic obedience and is probably house trained, as he’s very smart and clean in the kennels. He also is lovely walking on leash.

Ryder is a young adult, maybe 3 yrs old, male, neutered, and we hear he’s actually getting a bit chubby living the shelter life. 😂

He was a stray, many months ago, found on Rockahock Rd, wearing a tactical collar, but no ID or microchip and he was never claimed.

There is one sponsored adoption that hasn’t been used yet, so if he gets adopted quickly, the $20 shelter adoption fee will be waived.

Alyssa and Pink Poodle RVA did a fantastic job with Sheeba! She looks and smells FABULOUS!

Fingers crossed, we found out that a special someone who she was with today, may want to adopt her! We should know within a few days! ❤️❤️

Pink Poodle RVA
Tomorrow is the BIG spa day for Sheeba! For this we are so, so happy and thankful. But it was a tough day with sad news of reality.

We weren’t expecting miracles, but it hits hard when you hear the vet spell it out… 😢😢😢

Sheeba’s bloodwork wasn’t good, at all. Terrible kidney levels, she’s in kidney failure, and elevated liver levels.

The vet said we are looking at hospice care at this point, and to keep her as comfortable as possible. 💕💕💕

We don’t want her last months to be in the shelter, but if they are, we believe it is far better than her lonely life on the chain. 😭😭😭

And we also wanted to show you the new SHY addition to the NK AP shelter. French Toast. She’s probably a beagle mix at 30-35lbs. She’s one of those non leash walking, p*e when you touch her, kind of shy girls.

Sheeba update and more!
Pink Poodle RVA

Sheeba went to see the vet today, she was a pretty naughty old lady and she didn’t like being checked out by the vet or the techs. Her bloodwork results will be back in a few days. 😊

When she got back to the shelter, she was back to her chipper self and so she got a quick bath.

Yes, she’s still going to be pampered by the generous, wonderful, people at Pink Poodle RVA on Thursday.

Yes. She. Was. That. Dirty. 😂😷

In other news, our friends at the Charles City Shelter always seem to be full of great dogs needing homes lately and they needed some help, so the good folks at the NK AP shelter welcomed West and Huckleberry to the shelter today.

West is a male/neutered, 6-7 yr old ~~Sweet-As-Can-Be~~ yellow Lab / Golden mix, great with dogs and kids, who was treated for heart-worms thru the Tommy Fund. ❤️❤️

Huckleberry is a male/neutered ~~cuter than cute~~ little squatty, bulldog type who lived in a home; he had a family and his mommy passed away. That was 8 months ago. He is a fun dog who’s friendly with dogs and people.

We are so excited to share that Sheeba gets to leave the shelter and go to Pink Poodle RVA for a long, luxurious, afternoon of pampering on Thursday!

It will be so awesome to follow her journey from being a life long, chained up dog, to suddenly homeless, then to a pampered pooch, and finally finding a forever home.

***Update: Sheeba is Adopted! No picture, it is a yucky rainy day, she seemed very happy!***

❤️❤️❤️ The NK AP shelter has a new special, senior doggie addition. 🥰🥰🥰

Everyone, Meet Sheeba! She’s a real heartbreaker, a sweet, loving soul who’s recently become homeless. 😢

She’s pretty old, a teenager, in fact, and probably about 14-15 yrs, but we’re not exactly sure. She’s part border collie, maybe Lab, maybe shepherd, about 45 lbs.

She needs to find a peaceful, retirement home now, as her former human recently lost their home. As you can imagine, the hard, slick floors of the shelter are no place for her to thrive at her age.

Sheeba has been very sweet and content through all of this change and loss. She has completely amazed us with her calm, gentle, spirit.

Sheeba is happy to curl up in one of the dog houses and sleep the day away. She doesn’t see or hear very well anymore, but she still seems to appreciate any loving pets or tasty treats that come her way. 💕💕

She’s going to have an exam and bloodwork done on Tuesday to see if she can have any medicine for arthritis. She will also have her rabies vaccine updated.

We would love to find a groomer (and a transporter), who can see her after her vet appt, and maybe donate some freshening up for Sheeba…

Please, please share her pictures far and wide, so we can help make her shelter stay a very short one and her future be filled with the love of a family to call her own.

‼️ Male, black/brown, beagle/hound mix with blue collar running on Tunstall between the hunting club and Essex Hills. ‼️

He's scared, running back and forth in the road dodging cars. He wouldn't come to me, either.

Animal Control is off duty until the AM, unfortunately. 😢
