Last week, a small crew of our staff traveled to Madison County in north Florida to assist in rescuing 44 cats from a hoarding situation. We had an idea that the conditions would be less than ideal, but nothing could prepare us for what we actually encountered when we arrived.

The environment we found these cats in was absolutely heartbreaking. Many were found to be living in a condemned trailer with the roof caving in, the entire building covered in f***s and urine. Others were living in a storage shed behind the trailer, and the rest were found outside. The only food and water they had access too was also covered in f***s and urine.

As you can imagine, nearly every cat was sick, starving, scared, or all of the above. Our first order of business was getting them back to our shelter where they could experience comfort and safety for the first time in a long time, if ever.

The process of socializing these cats and addressing their medical needs is ongoing, and we anticipate it will take some time before they are ready for adoption. We are committed to providing them with the best possible care to ensure they can eventually find loving homes. Your support is crucial in helping us continue this important work!

Caring for these cats requires significant resources. We are asking for your support through donations to help cover the costs of medical care, food, and other essentials. Your generosity will make a world of difference to these cats as they begin their journey to recovery and finding safe, loving homes. As the weather starts to warm up, remember to always make sure your pets have access to fresh water and plenty of shade. Hydration is key for animals just like it is for humans.

Here are some easy hydration tips:

-Make sure you have both indoor and outdoor water supplies.
-Set a schedule for checking the water supply every morning and twice during the day.
-Check to make sure they have access to cool, clean water. Just as we are refreshed by a cool drink of fresh water, our pets enjoy that same pleasure – especially in the heat.
-Bring a portable water bowl out on walks or to the park.

She's only got out one other time and she didn't go far and wasn't gone long. She is skittish around strangers. May be hiding. Please help us locate her.

Description: Silver with black spots and a white belly with black spots on her belly, black on the underside of all of her feet. Greenish eyes that can also look Amber pending the lighting. She's about 25 inches long and 13-15 inches tall. She's a yr old. She tries to make friends with other animals. We are desperate to get he back. She's skittish around strangers. It's important to be cautious as some fertilizers can be harmful to pets if ingested or if they come into contact with their skin. The risk varies depending on the chemicals used in the fertilizer; ingredients like disulfoton or metaldehyde are particularly toxic. To keep pets safe, it is generally advised to keep dogs off the lawn for 24 to 72 hours after application, allowing the fertilizer to be absorbed into the soil. Watering the lawn post-fertilization can also help reduce risks by helping the chemicals seep deeper into the ground. For those concerned about safety, opting for pet-friendly or organic fertilizers can be a safer alternative.

Pet-friendly gardens can be beautiful, enjoyable, and safe. “Petscaping” – as it’s been called – requires humans willing to design for pets and owners alike. Here are some of the best suggestions:

-Avoid any toxic plants or flowers that pets are likely to encounter.
-Don’t use plants with thorns, thistles, or stickers.
-Include intentional relief areas to prevent nitrogen in urine from browning your lawn.
-Make sure there are paths for pets and people alike.
-Use dense plants to protect more delicate plants.
-Natural fertilizers (e.g. compost, manure, etc.) should be used if possible, and chemical fertilizers should be scrutinized and avoided.

Petscaping should also include clear boundaries, secure fencing, and safe lighting/electricity. When done right, a pet-friendly garden is a beautiful place for everyone to enjoy.

Message from Owner: Jimmy flew out Saturday night when his dad was on the BBQ. He tried to get to his mom on the pool deck. He landed on her shoulder twice but was afraid of the screen door creaking sound and spooked into a tree. We haven’t been able to put eyes back on him since almost 9 pm May 4th. He has a brother named Montego who is screeching for him. We desperately want him back .

Description: Jimmy lands on shoulders, he is very tame. He responds and may even yell “Mama”, “Mama I Love You” and “how ya doing”. His mom has blonde hair and may look to land on your shoulder if he sees blonde hair. He is very social.

How to be the best dog:

-Always hide your family's shoes. They love to run around trying to find them.

-Sleep in the middle of their bed, not the end of the bed or on the floor. Your human loves when you breathe on their face in the middle of the night, so get cozy!

-Act like you haven’t seen your human in years every time they walk through the door, even if you just saw them 10 minutes ago. It makes them feel so special.

-Bark loudly at the mailman. They are an immediate threat to your family.

-If you see your human acting sad in any way, lick their face and lay your head on their lap. This is proven to make them feel much better.

-Be gentle with your tiny humans. They may be new to you, but they will soon become your best friend!

-Get excited for your spa day, you will look and smell amazing afterward!

-Be the best friend your human has ever had!
