The Great Dane, with its formidable stature and stirring features, is already a head-turning breed. Add in the mesmerizing effect of a speckled, multi-hued coat, and these gentle giants are almost impossible to look away from 🎨

In addition to brindle, fawn, blue, and black, the Great Dane breed standard also supports merle and harlequin— two patterns that produce a dazzling, dappled coat. The patterns look nearly identical, with the main difference coming from the base color of the coat. A merle typically sports a pale to dark grey base, while the Harlequin's base is white.

Since a Harlequin has one copy of the merle gene (M) with one copy of the harlequin gene (H), a Harlequin Great Dane is always a merle, but a merle is not always a Harlequin. The H gene essentially bleaches the Great Dane, leaving blotchy, ripped patches of merle on a white base. The harlequin gene doesn't pass from the parent to the puppy, and only occurs when certain color genes are combined.

Floppy-eared hound dogs with velvety noses and a unique, song-like BAROOOOO in their howl, the Beagle is a beloved breed— but what catapulted these talented scent hounds to notoriety?

The elite skillset that enables them to detect bedbugs and pregnancy with their snout made the Beagle popular well before the 1950s, but on October 2, 1950, seven newspapers across the United States ran a short comic strip introducing the character of a young boy named Charlie Brown. Two days later, a small black-and-white dog trotted into the frame, a daisy sprouting from atop its head. In the October 4th comic, Charlie Brown leans out his window to water the flowers, and inadvertently drenches the little beagle, soon to be known to the world forevermore as Snoopy.

At its peak, the Peanuts comic strip had a readership of 355 million worldwide, and Snoopy was quickly becoming a fan favorite among its cast of loveable characters. By 1953, Beagles rose to the top of the AKC chart for most popular breed in the United States, beating out Cocker Spaniels and keeping the top spot for the next six years.

Curly coats are seen across many breeds, like the Bichon, Lagotto, and Chesapeake Bay Retriever. But these dogs don't just sport corkscrew-like hair for the cuteness of it all— and no, they don't get a perm at the groomer either. So what's the deal with all those curls?

While the history varies from breed to breed, many curly-coated dogs have backgrounds rooted in water. Whether they were working alongside fishermen, embarking on epic water rescues, or weathering the harsh conditions of the Chesapeake Bay, the curly coat often served a specific purpose.

And while we can marvel at their purpose-driven pedigrees, don't believe sensational claims that dogs with this coat type are truly hypoallergenic. Some of these breeds may cause fewer allergic symptoms due to shedding less or having less hair. The Barbet, Pumi, and the Bedlington Terrier, for example, don't shed a lot, making them great candidates for families who are concerned about allergic reactions. The twist is that less shedding doesn't necessarily translate to less grooming or low maintenance. So if you're thinking of bringing one of these puppies home, prepare to invest in supplies and grooming visits.

Meet the rare Otterhound 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Originally developed in England to control pesky otter populations, this talented scent hound is now one of the most endangered dog breeds in the world.

The Otterhound came about in England with the intention of protecting rivers, ponds, and streams from otters who preyed on fish.

Kept by small folks and kings alike during medieval times, this keen scent hound was almost too good at doing their job.

A reminder for dog owners living in areas affected by wildfire smoke: poor air quality can impact dogs just like people. Puppies, brachycephalic breeds, older dogs, & dogs w/ medical issues may be affected more than others. Here are some simple precautions to keep your pups safe:

If your air quality is at a dangerous level, it's best to keep your dogs inside as much as possible. Keep bathroom breaks and walks brief, and avoid strenuous exercise and outdoor playtime.

Coughing, reduced appetite and thirst, squinting, lethargy, and trouble breathing are all signs that your dog may be affected by poor air quality. Bring them inside immediately, monitor their symptoms and call your vet if trouble persists.

Entertain your pup indoors with enrichment toys like lickmats and food puzzles, training and scent games, and good old fashioned snuggles.

If you’re in an area where you may be evacuated, have a doggy go-bag. Pack their vaccine information, bottled water, canned food, any medications they take, a first aid kit, and stress-relieving items like anxiety vests or a favorite toy.

Continue to monitor you and your pup's health, keep updated on your local news and weather alerts, and stay safe ❤️

When Marty the Dachshund puppy was born, a sprawling 211 miles down Interstate 80 separated him and his future forever home. With the help of Good Dog, this dappled Doxie puppy from Great Bend, PA, found his perfect match in a couple from Long Island, NY 🌭

After connecting with a breeder on Good Dog, Jessica C. and her partner spent a month and a half receiving updates on their new puppy. It started with photos of Marty barely opening his eyes and evolved into videos of the Dachshund growing into a well-socialized, adjusted little guy. As the eight-week mark crawled closer, it was time for the couple to plan their pick-up day.

So, in the early hours of a frigid Saturday morning in January, Jessica C. and her partner made the trip east to bring home their new puppy. They first fell in love with the iconic "wiener dog" breed after meeting their neighbor's three Dachshunds on a walk. Their shared adoration for the breed came full circle the morning they met Marty and turned back toward home— suddenly a family of three.

This April, Erin R. made the 141-mile trip to Mountain Grove, MO, to pick up her long-awaited Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, Pippa 🫶🏻

Erin had her heart set on the Bernese, so she turned to Good Dog in search of a puppy that would be a good fit for her lifestyle. A few weeks before pick-up, she went down to visit the litter and fell in love with one chunky little puppy she would go on to name Pippa.

Since leaving the nest, Pippa's done a great deal of exploring her new backyard, easily slept through the night in her crate, tackled her first vet visit with the utmost confidence, and felt the spring breeze blowing on her face.

The wirehaired coat is much more than a "cute grandpa" aesthetic— the harsh, water-resistant fur serves a functional purpose as protection in rugged terrains. For example, those shaggy eyebrows and adorable little beards seen on GWPs help prevent dogs from getting cuts and tears.

Irish Wolfhounds, Scotties, and Fauves are a few of the breeds with wirehaired coats. Dachshunds appear in wireheard as well as smooth-coated and long-haired. Maintaining this type of coat varies from breed to breed— while the GWP only needs minimal maintenance, grooming a Schnauzer requires consistent work because of their double coat.

Taking an honest look at your lifestyle and doing your research, especially on breed coats, can help guide you toward finding the dog that matches you best! And don't forget you have a whole team of real people ready to answer any of your breed-specific questions.
