The Great Dane, with its formidable stature and stirring features, is already a head-turning breed. Add in the mesmerizing effect of a speckled, multi-hued coat, and these gentle giants are almost impossible to look away from 🎨

In addition to brindle, fawn, blue, and black, the Great Dane breed standard also supports merle and harlequin— two patterns that produce a dazzling, dappled coat. The patterns look nearly identical, with the main difference coming from the base color of the coat. A merle typically sports a pale to dark grey base, while the Harlequin's base is white.

Since a Harlequin has one copy of the merle gene (M) with one copy of the harlequin gene (H), a Harlequin Great Dane is always a merle, but a merle is not always a Harlequin. The H gene essentially bleaches the Great Dane, leaving blotchy, ripped patches of merle on a white base. The harlequin gene doesn't pass from the parent to the puppy, and only occurs when certain color genes are combined.

Floppy-eared hound dogs with velvety noses and a unique, song-like BAROOOOO in their howl, the Beagle is a beloved breed...

Floppy-eared hound dogs with velvety noses and a unique, song-like BAROOOOO in their howl, the Beagle is a beloved breed— but what catapulted these talented scent hounds to notoriety?

The elite skillset that enables them to detect bedbugs and pregnancy with their snout made the Beagle popular well before the 1950s, but on October 2, 1950, seven newspapers across the United States ran a short comic strip introducing the character of a young boy named Charlie Brown. Two days later, a small black-and-white dog trotted into the frame, a daisy sprouting from atop its head. In the October 4th comic, Charlie Brown leans out his window to water the flowers, and inadvertently drenches the little beagle, soon to be known to the world forevermore as Snoopy.

At its peak, the Peanuts comic strip had a readership of 355 million worldwide, and Snoopy was quickly becoming a fan favorite among its cast of loveable characters. By 1953, Beagles rose to the top of the AKC chart for most popular breed in the United States, beating out Cocker Spaniels and keeping the top spot for the next six years.
