I want to also thank Dominique Sierra for thevdonation of Tiki Cat Food and toys. I will gladly accept the food your cat won’t eat and am very grateful for all donations. I feed a lot of cats each week including colony cats, which numbers close to 50. It gets very expensive. Everything makes a difference in the lives of cats. 3 YEARS AGO TODAY, we became the only nonprofit cat rescue in Gilroy. Please help me continue to rescue cats and kittens by contributing whatever amount you are able so they can have a better life in a loving home instead of suffering on the street. Over the past 2 weeks, I have rescued 9 kittens, mostly singles, and I will be accepting one more tomorrow.

The main purpose of our organization is to end cat and kitten suffering and overpopulation through rescue, fostering, adoption, and educating the public on preventative spay and neutering and TNR (trap, neuter, and return). We would like to open a sanctuary where senior cats and cats with special needs who are difficult to adopt out, can live out their life. We would also like to open a brick-and-mortar building where the public can visit 7 days a week to adopt a cat or kitten to add to their family.
So far, we have rescued and found loving homes for 110 cats and kittens. We have TNR'd over 100 and we continue to do so every week. We have helped many community members who have reached out for help and we continue to work hard to save cats and kittens from a terrible life on the streets.

Repost • We are expanding our Community Cat Program!

Targeted TNR (Trap – Neuter – Return) is the most effective strategy to reduce community cat overpopulation while improving the quality of life for outdoor cats.

Studies indicate that TNR’ing 80% of a cat colony is the ideal way to stabilize the population. Last year, we piloted a Targeted TNR program with a local partner and a few dedicated volunteer trappers. Although most of these colonies were in residential neighborhoods, we were able to make a positive impact in community spaces and local business centers in Milpitas and Sunnyvale as well. We altered over 500 cats in 7 months, which prevented more than 6,300 cats from entering shelters!

This year, we are excited to expand our impact by collaborating with to strategically target and alter colonies in Sunnyvale, Milpitas, and San Jose, with the hope of expanding to other cities in the future.

The laser light toy may initially appear to be a great way to give your cat some exercise. The problem though, is that it doesn't provide the tactile satisfaction of having "caught" anything. Cats have carpal whiskers on their paws that tell them when they have captured the prey and whether there's any movement or not. With the laser toy, your cat never gets that message. Playtime isn't just about getting your cat to move, it's also about providing satisfaction and building confidence. Don't frustrate your cat. Use an actual interactive toy so your cat can enjoy being a successful hunter.

If your cat is obsessed with the laser toy, start the game with the laser and then direct the light onto an actual interactive toy. This way, you can gradually wean your cat off the frustrating light.

Something to keep in mind as cats grow older is that some of them may have trouble getting in and out of the litter box. For cats with limited mobility, arthritis, or other pain issues, switch to low entry litter boxes. If you're concerned about litter scatter or overspray, choose a high-sided plastic storage container and cut a low entrance on one end.

Some older cats who may also be experiencing cognitive issues may need a box that has extremely low sides all the way around. In some cases you may need to simply use a plastic tray. Place litter mats underneath to catch spills.

Additionally, increase the number of litter box locations to make it more convenient for older cats so they don't have to walk as far.

Be diligent about litter box maintenance but also be diligent about litter box monitoring. Pay close attention to what is or isn't happening in the box. Changes in litter box habits, appearance/size/odor of urine or f***l waste, elimination outside of the litter box can be signs of an underlying medical problem. If you have any questions about your cat's litter box habits, talk with your veterinarian.

Interactive playtime is important for multiple reasons. Of course it's fun, but it's also good exercise, helps build confidence, strengthens the bond, is beneficial for dealing with depression or boredom, and can be a help in resolving behavior problems.

Make time to engage in interactive play sessions at least twice a day with your cat. If you have a multicat household, it's still important to do individual sessions so a cat doesn't have to worry about competing for the toy. Individual play sessions are also good because a cat may have a toy preference.
