It’s a blessing and a curse to have a heart for animal rescue.

We use our passion to do everything we can. We use all our resources: our time, energy, connections, finances, etc. to help, save, and protect the strays across our community.

The difference in us and you is we can’t leave our work at work. We can’t clock out and go on with life. We don’t have the luxury of checking out after the workday is over. We think about not only the animals in our care and how we can get them safe and into homes, but of the animals we couldn’t intake because of low resources, the animals who didn’t make it after their injury, the animals we know are roaming the streets and could be killed at any second, the animals in shelters that are being euthanized (humanely and not) because people are careless and won’t spay/neuter their pet or they get an animal when they shouldn’t and surrender them.

We are weighed down, every second of every day, with this passion of ours.

Don’t get me wrong, the wins are HUGE for us. When we find the perfect home for one of our babies and they get to experience love for the very first time. The tail wags and the happy smiles we see when they finally leave the boarding facility. The updates we get from our animals cuddling with their new besties (animal or human) and you see how *safe* they feel. It fills us up like you can’t even imagine. THAT is why we do this.

But then reality creeps back in, all too quickly. The work must continue. And we have to keep going and pushing through, even when sometimes it feels we can’t move or think because we feel so broken. At times, we are barely hanging on. But we continue... because the animals need us.

Like I said, it’s a blessing and a curse to have a heart for animal rescue. That being said, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Ways to help:
• Be kind, respectful, and understanding when a rescue says no. TRUST ME it is NOT because they don’t want to help. It is because they literally cannot, whether it be financial, capacity, etc.

• Donate - Whether it be financially or materially. We cannot help animals without funds! We are also always in need of food, toys, beds, crates, blankets, toys, etc. (https://www.animalaid.org/donate)

• Foster/adopt - Bring an animal into your home! If you have the space, USE IT! We and they need it. I promise, no part of you will regret it. (https://www.animalaid.org)

• Volunteer - Help us walk our animals, take them on a car ride, help with events, or help in our thrift store. We always need more bodies helping. It alleviates us as well as gives us time to focus on getting our animals homes! (https://www.animalaid.org/volunteer)

• Share our posts!!! If nothing else, please share our posts. You never know who of your friends or family could be a perfect match for an animal.

Stevie is losing her foster and we need to find her a new place to crash ASAP!

After being hit by a car, Stevie needed an amputation and then two more serious surgeries due to a blood clot. We thought at one point we were going to lose her, but she made it and even managed to get herself adopted. However, Stevie was recently returned to us.

Stevie is 1 year old and 42 lbs and, honestly, a super-sweet, three-legged snuggle bug who LOVES people. She’ll crawl into your lap and cuddle like a baby.

She does well with kids and smaller dogs. She's more selective with bigger dogs. Regardless, she needs to be fed away from other dogs.

Can you help us?

Snowbelle, our 3-year-old, 3-legged White Lab/Great Pyrenees mix! 🐾

Snowbelle’s journey has been tough, but her spirit remains unbroken. A kind-hearted Samaritan found her struggling to walk, and after a thorough vet exam, it was discovered that she had a fractured pelvis and a buckshot in her hip. This led to the amputation of her back left leg. Despite these challenges, Snowbelle is a true lovebug, currently recuperating and undergoing heartworm treatment.

Snowbelle is great with other dogs, cats, and kids, making her the perfect addition to any family. She’s on a quest to find her forever home where she can share her love and resilience.

If you’re looking for a special companion who will inspire you every day, consider adopting Snowbelle. She’s ready to bring joy and warmth to her new family. 🏠

🚨URGENT PLEA: Foster for Stevie 🚨

Stevie is losing her foster and we need to find her a new place to crash! We don’t believe boarding would be a good option for Stevie and would really like to keep her in a home environment.

After being hit by a car, Stevie needed an amputation and then two more serious surgeries due to a blood clot. We thought at one point we were going to lose her, but she made it and even managed to get herself adopted. However, Stevie was recently returned to us due to an incident over food/resource guarding; however, we believe with the right person, dedication and training, she can and will thrive.

Do you have any room for the sweetheart? Animal Aid of Tulsa will pay for all costs associated with Stevie (food, medical) while she is in a foster home.

Lotus 🌸 came to us from T-Town TNR after a severe dog attack, which led to the amputation of one of her legs. Despite her challenging past, this petite sweetheart is healing and learning to trust again. 🐾

Lotus may be quiet and timid at first, but she has a heart full of love waiting to be shared. Her softer demeanor might make her hide under the radar, but don’t let that fool you—she’s capable of giving you all the love you’ve ever wanted! Her current foster has been working on showing her good things happen when she enters the room (i.e., yummy treats or food/head scratches) so she's starting to open up 💕

If you’re looking for a special feline friend who will bring joy and inspiration to your home, consider adopting Lotus. She’s ready to find her forever home and show you just how resilient and loving she can be. 🏠

: Support Our Team’s Well-being!

This Friday, we’re raising funds to support our animals indirectly – by investing in our dedicated human employees.

As you can imagine, working in animal rescue is mentally taxing, and this year has been particularly tough. We’ve noticed many of our rescue and Board members are experiencing burnout. To prevent losing any staff or members, we want to send our two full-time rescue employees to the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine Compassion Fatigue Strategies Plus online course.

Currently, Animal Aid of Tulsa has two dedicated full-time rescue staff members. Together, they work over 100 hours a week, not only caring for our animals but also managing events, fundraisers, and writing grants to keep our rescue operational. It’s an immense amount of work, especially when dealing with sick and dying animals daily.

The University of Florida’s online course is tailored for shelter and rescue workers, offering valuable strategies to manage and mitigate stress, enhance self-care and team-care practices, foster long-term compassion satisfaction, build resilience, and implement practical changes in personal and professional lives.

As a small non-profit, we don’t have a training budget like most companies. So, we need to raise the funds for both of our employees to attend. We need to raise around $600.

Can you help us by donating $5 or more today? Your support will make a huge difference in ensuring our team can continue their vital work needing Tulsa’s animals in need.

Donate at animalaid.org/donate or
Venmo

Thank you for your generosity! 💖

: Why Are You Always Begging for Fosters?

Welcome back to our new series, where we shed light on the true “costs” of our rescue work! Over the next few weeks, we’ll dive into the costs, processes, and more behind saving our animals.

🐾❤ Did you know that Animal Aid of Tulsa has NO designated shelter?
Yep. Animal Aid of Tulsa does not have a designated physical shelter; we rely entirely on fosters and volunteers to care for the animals we rescue. This means that our biggest need (after donations) is people willing to volunteer and foster!

Foster availability is a crucial factor before we decide to intake an animal. While we can board a dog at a veterinary kennel, this option is costly and often more detrimental to the animal. No animal wants to live their days enclosed by four walls, especially with limited space to move around.

🐾❤ Current Foster Situation
At present, we have 33 animals with fosters and 9 animals in boarding/other facilities due to a lack of available volunteers/fosters. The majority of these animals (7 out of 9) are dogs, which tend to be harder to place with fosters than cats.

By fostering, you provide a temporary home and care for these animals, giving them a chance to find their forever homes. Plus, when you foster, all costs associated with the animal, including medical expenses, food, and supplies, are covered by Animal Aid of Tulsa. The only cost to you is your time and love.

Fostering not only saves lives but also enriches yours. It’s a rewarding experience that makes a significant difference not just in the animal’s life, but in yours as well. It helps socialize your own pets and teaches your children empathy and responsibility.

🐾❤ Join Us in Making a Difference
People are often hesitant to foster because they fear the emotional difficulty of letting go. While it’s true that saying goodbye can be tough, the joy of seeing your foster animal go to a loving, forever home often brings happy (not sad) tears.

Join us in making a difference today! animalaid.org/foster

Anyone want a Cookie? 🍪

Meet Cookie, a resilient sweetheart who has overcome a tough start with severe mange. Now, she’s a shining example of a 100% good girl! Cookie is a quick learner, treat lover, and always eager for training sessions.

Given her natural herding instincts, Cookie would do best with dogs her size (20 lbs) or larger. We’re not sure how she feels about cats yet, but we can arrange a cat test if needed.

Cookie is quite the chatterbox and would thrive in a home rather than an apartment. If you lead an active lifestyle, Cookie would love to be your loyal companion on every adventure!
