The Berkeley Animal Care Services shelter is responsible for the community's animals in need. We are the volunteers of Berkeley Animal Care Services.

If you are interested in adopting one of the animals featured on this page, please visit or call BACS directly. As we are only volunteers and not employees of the shelter, we may not have the most current information available, although we do try and keep this page as updated as possible. Information regarding adoption fees, criteria and special programs is provided as a courtesy for prospective a

dopters. It is set by the City of Berkeley and Berkeley Animal Care Services, not the volunteers who maintain this page.

Dogs $125.00 / Cats $100 -- include shots, microchip, spay or neuter
Rabbits, BIrds, Exotics: $25
Rodents: $10

60/6/60 Adoption Program, Partnering Senior Animals with Senior Friends -- If you are 60 or older and adopt an animal who is 6 or older, you'll get 60% off the adoption fee! Adoption Criteria:
In order to qualify as an adopter, you must bring proof of home ownership or your rental contract showing you are allowed to have pets before the adoption can be completed. If you're coming to adopt a new family or household pet, please bring your family members or other members of the household with you to the shelter -- including any other dogs in the family. We want to make sure your new dog is a good fit for both 2-leggers and 4-leggers alike.

This simple step increases the chances of a swift reunion if your dog goes missing. It's , and just beyond the longest day of the year, but it's just the beginning of summer- and you can spend it with sweet Summer!

Summer is a distinguished 15-year-old gentleman with a soft gray coat, and he's seeking a quiet home to spend his golden years. Though initially shy and takes his time getting to know you, beneath that gentle exterior lies a heart full of affection.

Once comfortable, Summer blossoms into a cuddle bug, purring with delight at head scratches and a good brushing session. He'd be perfect for someone who appreciates a mellow companion and enjoys showering love on a deserving senior cat.

Meet Finn, a little lover-boy with people. This guy is immediately friendly and playful with all humans. He loves to jump up on you and adores his lap time. He’s a little on the nervous side when he’s out in the world, and sometimes shows it by sneezing repeatedly. It’s his special nervous tic. Finn will also need some help feeling comfortable around things moving quickly, like bikes and cars. But when it’s quiet, he’s an eager little walker. He’s not a fan of other dogs, though, so Finn will want to be your only dog in the household. Come and meet him at BACS!

☀️ Happy first day of summer, one and all! ☀️

Perhaps you're looking to enjoy the nice weather and longest day of the year with a new best friend? Well, meet Ada, a six-month old shepherd who is fast coming out of her shell!

When she arrived at the shelter, she was somewhat fearful and under-socialized, but she’s making friends quickly and showing her puppy self to the world. Ada knows some basic commands like “sit” - and just like another famous Ada (Ada Lovelace), she is very smart! She’s learning quickly how to walk on a leash, but definitely will need some reinforcement and training not to pull or zig-zag. Ada is cautious but friendly with other dogs, and once she’s comfortable she becomes very playful. She also bonds quickly with her humans - perhaps you're the human for her?

Meet Pancha, a one-of-a-kind, 1-year-old “cow kitty”(black and white spotted) with a heart of gold! This friendly fella is a chatterbox who will greet you with purrs and meow-conversations. Pancha enjoys belly rubs (be prepared for some serious kneading!), but watch out for his playful side - he has a mischievous streak and loves untying shoelaces! Cuddly and full of love, Pancha would be a delightful addition to any home looking for a furry friend with a unique personality.

Aspen might be the sweetest, most loving shepherd you will ever meet. She is a bit timid, but bonds quickly to her people and wants to stay right with you. She is still getting used to the sights and sounds of the area surrounding the shelter— they are intimidating to her. She’s a lovely and beautiful girl, with a coat the color of natural straw and very soulful eyes. Aspen walks nicely on leash and is comfortable around other dogs, appearing to want to play. She’s a young girl who might steal your heart – come see if she’s your perfect fit!

What better way to end then with some cat adoptions!!! Our orange boy Business, kitten Irving, and fancy friend Nadia all went home today!

Both Business and Nadia were dumped at our shelter, left in crates overnight, on separate occasions. Irving was adopted and returned for being too much kitten. Thank you adopters, for giving these adorable and affectionate cats a furever home.

This and Fathers Day, we want to celebrate q***r cat dad and musical legend Freddie Mercury!

Freddie Mercury is well known as the frontman for Queen, but did you know he was also the caretaker for up to 10 cats at a time? Freddie would insist on calling to talk to the cats while on tour, and filled their stockings with presents every Christmas. He dedicated his solo album to Jerry and the rest of his feline family, and wrote the song "Delilah" about one of his cats. Even more delightful, most of his cats were strays he picked up from local rescue centers!

If you were looking for a musically inspired cat of your own to follow in Freddie's footsteps, may we introduce you to our tuxie Madonna? Madonna is twelve years old, but this senior kitty is a playful goofball. Her rumbling purr is a constant reminder of her contentment, especially when a treat (or two!) comes her way. Though her love for snacks is undeniable, she’s a little bit chunky, so keep a watchful eye to maintain her elegant figure. Brush time is pure bliss for her. Run a brush through her sleek black fur and white chest and paws, and she will reward you with enthusiastic snuggles. A cuddle buddy extraordinaire, her sweetness and companionship make her an absolute treasure. Maybe she'll inspire you to write a song of your own!

When you're a bulldog—hefty, strong, and firm in your boundaries—sometimes you just need a ride back to the shelter! 🚗🐾

Bulldogs are known for their stubbornness and strength. When they plant themselves down and refuse to move, it's often their way of asserting their boundaries and communicating their preferences. Whether it's a hot day, tired legs, or just a mood, a bulldog's refusal to walk is a clear message that it's time to take a break and respect their needs. Thank you volunteers for giving Deebo a lift!!!

This is Balto, a wonderful boy who is both handsome and sensitive. He’s a bit perplexed to have found himself in a shelter. It makes him fairly nervous, as do the hands of strangers on him, at first. But if you take your time getting to know him, he is a loyal and loving companion. Balto appears comfortable around other dogs, not reacting to them at all on leash. He likes his walks, and seems housetrained. He also gets a little anxious around loud construction noises near the shelter, so he’d be very happy to get out of there and into a new home of his own. A back yard would definitely be on Balto’s wish list. A home on the quieter side would be good, too, though he’d love some outings - walks and hikes would be great. Balto is very human-connected, so come see if he’s your perfect match.

"Hi, my name is Erika, I adopted Zeus from BACS in December 2018. He was estimated to be around 5 years old when I adopted him. He’s now around 10.5, we always make sure to celebrate his birthday. He loves adventures, and has been on a few road trips to Washington with me. He’s the sweetest boy who wants to be everyone’s friends and expects them to have treats for him. Thank you guys for everything you do ❤️"

Meet Lola, the love bug! ❤️ She’s all smiles and wiggles, all the time. Lola seems friendly with everybody, and also appears comfortable around other dogs. She’s a nice walker on leash, and probably would be just as happy cuddling with you on the couch. Lola is also a great medium size — easy to handle and can go with you anywhere. **UPDATE: Calvin was ADOPTED!! 🎉

Calvin was born to be a therapy dog. He is the most loving, gentle creature you will ever meet. He was also born with a few peculiarities – he has one very small eye, and a bit of a head tilt, plus he is deaf. But none of these things holds Calvin back even one little bit. And they don’t require any ongoing medical treatment, just the ability to see what makes him special. Calvin would love nothing more than to stay in your lap or right next to you all day long, preferably getting pets. He has an interesting texture to his coat that makes it extra fun to pet him. Calvin also will walk on a leash, but it’s not his favorite thing, so he’s not a dog that requires a ton of exercise. He also appears to be on his way to being housetrained. Come take this sweet boy home!

Kuddles has the funniest googly eyes! This girl came in with her name, so we’re expecting she’s very cuddly with her chosen people. At the shelter, she’s been pretty shy with strangers, even hiding under her bed at times. But go in her kennel and she’ll pretty quickly want to check you out. She just does it on her terms. After that, Kuddles is happy to be picked up. She’s a nice walker on leash, showing no issues passing other dogs. She’s happy just to go about her business, occasionally checking back for her handler, to see if you’re still there. Kuddles appears housetrained, and would love to get out of the shelter soon and into her new home, where she can get comfortable and show you her complete Kuddly self!

It's ! Today we've got Wally and his person Kirk!

"Wally came home from BAC in January 2016. What a wonderful family member. He is so popular in the neighborhood! We actually have a neighbor that calls to borrow him and he is specifically invited to every party. He knows where every house hides the treats. He has a personality as big as his head. Shelter dogs are the best!"

This duo goes together like peanut butter and jelly... or more like Peanut and Bella!! Peanut and Bella came into the shelter together and seem pretty bonded. While Peanut is the more outgoing of the two, Bella finds herself being followed by her fellow friend! These Dachshunds would really love a home to live out their retirement years. It's going to be a scorcher!!! Dogs in hot cars can suffer from potentially fatal heat stroke in as little as 15 minutes. Dogs die in hot cars as they can overheat very quickly and struggle to cool themselves down, even when a window has been left open or water has been left in the car.

If you think weekends are for chillaxing with your friends, you should meet Duey, your future goofy sidekick! He’s all puppy so far, appearing very reserved and anxious at first, and then jumping all over you once he knows you even a little bit. Once this young yellow lab pup gets outside, he settles down nicely and walks politely on leash, with only sporadic bursts of enthusiasm. Like any growing puppy, he needs a few lessons in keeping his teeth to himself, so he’d probably do best in a home without very young children. Duckling peeps

Our Animal Control Officers recieved a call about a deceased duck on Frontage Road. Once on scene, Officer Justus heard the peeps of little ducklings. These poor babies had just lost their mama and were found under a bush right next to the freeway! After a night with Justus, the ducklings were transported to a rescue by a lovely volunteer.
