The Berkeley Animal Care Services shelter is responsible for the community's animals in need. We are the volunteers of Berkeley Animal Care Services.

If you are interested in adopting one of the animals featured on this page, please visit or call BACS directly. As we are only volunteers and not employees of the shelter, we may not have the most current information available, although we do try and keep this page as updated as possible. Information regarding adoption fees, criteria and special programs is provided as a courtesy for prospective a

dopters. It is set by the City of Berkeley and Berkeley Animal Care Services, not the volunteers who maintain this page.

Adoption Fees:
Dogs $125.00 / Cats $100 -- include shots, microchip, spay or neuter
Rabbits, BIrds, Exotics: $25
Rodents: $10

60/6/60 Adoption Program, Partnering Senior Animals with Senior Friends -- If you are 60 or older and adopt an animal who is 6 or older, you'll get 60% off the adoption fee! Adoption Criteria:
In order to qualify as an adopter, you must bring proof of home ownership or your rental contract showing you are allowed to have pets before the adoption can be completed. If you're coming to adopt a new family or household pet, please bring your family members or other members of the household with you to the shelter -- including any other dogs in the family. We want to make sure your new dog is a good fit for both 2-leggers and 4-leggers alike.

Rumba is the longest-term resident at the shelter, having been adopted and returned a few times through no fault of her own. Rumba loves human affection, greeting you with kisses and asking for belly rubs and treats. She’s an enthusiastic walker who would be equally happy strolling by your side or going for a run. Rumba is friendly with other dogs and has been a play group super star and also goes on tandem walks. Rumba is a lover-girl, so don’t miss the chance to make this sweet, loyal girl a part of your family!

Meeko comes from a line of gorgeous huskies. He is a bit shy at first, especially with people putting their hands on him. He’d much rather you take him out for a walk first. Meeko is a gentle walker on leash and appears totally comfortable with other dogs around. He’s not completely sure about humans yet, but staff and volunteers are working on making him feel safe and more confident. Meeko is very gentle and loves exercise. He would probably do best in a home with older kids or adults where he can get lots of walks, hikes, or runs. A back yard would also be on his wish list! Do you love a dog with a snow white coat and a sweet disposition? Come meet Babybel. This girl is silky soft and oh so lovely. She was found tied to a tree, but things are looking up for her. Babybel can be a little hand shy with new people, but she quickly relaxes and wants to be friends. She may not have much leash experience yet, but she passes other dogs very politely. She appears dog friendly. She also seems housetrained and is very human-oriented. Come meet her today – she may be your new best friend.

While Pit Bulls are known for their loyalty and affection, they face stigma due to misconceptions about their temperament. What are those cute bald birds you ask? Pigeons! Animal Control Officer Winter collected two baby pigeons found near their deceased mom in Albany. After a quick text and even faster response, the baby birds were transported to a volunteer of Palomacy Pigeon/Dove rescue. The two babies were introduced to a pair of surrogate parent pigeons. Thankfully, they were accepted and are now safe! 😊

Our neighbors over at Twelve Co. decided to visit the shelter for a day of cold and rainy hard work! They folded laundary, swept floors and cleaned dishes! The big task? Shovel mulch into our new dog play yard!! Of course we ended the day with some puppy love. Rosa and Reyna appreciated the attention and are still available for adoption! Thank you Twelve Co. and volunteer John for planning and braving the weather and giving us a helping hand.

What's in this deep dark crevice you ask? Well... Animal Control Officer Justus was dispatched to an owned cat that fell between two concrete walls. They tried doing a lasso method, but the cat said, "No way!" The cat owner was able to find a long wooden pole, hoping the cat would trust walking on it. Within seconds of gently placing the pole under her, she put her feet on the pole and started balancing and walking right towards ACO Justus! Both the owner and cat were happy to be reunited. The cat was given wet food immediately to calm her nerves from the stressful event!

Meet Lupe, a beautiful girl who looks more like a tiger than a wolf! Her stunning markings and sweet nature are bound to steal your heart. Lupe is a little shy around humans at first, but she absolutely adores other dogs, especially male companions. When she’s playing with other dogs, Lupe really starts to shine—becoming more comfortable and even warming up to the humans around her. She loves going on tandem walks with her doggy pals, and it’s clear she’s eager to make up for lost time. With patience and love, Lupe will make a devoted and affectionate companion to the right adopter who is ready to help her feel safe and secure in her new life. Could that be you? This is Aussie, a gorgeous and special dog who needs a special adopter. He came to the shelter when he lost his previous owner. He’s full of contradictions: he is shy of handling, but he adores getting out for walks. He loves to pull you along, but he doesn’t like it if you pull him! Aussie will likely do well in a quiet home with someone who likes to read, watch movies, or go on long hikes in the woods. He appears comfortable around other dogs. But he’s not terribly comfortable in new situations or with loud noises. Still, once Aussie is familiar with you, he is very loyal and attentive. He likes affection from people he trusts, especially outside of his kennel safe zone. Aussie also seems housetrained. Come down and meet him to see if you might be his special person. He’s hoping so!

Come on down and meet Rodney, a great dog who is solid in every way. He’s an athletic guy with a completely unflappable personality. Rodney will make a wonderful addition to just about any home. He’s an energetic walker, who also loves to stop and sniff sometimes. He passes other dogs politely and is attentive to his person. And he appears totally housetrained. We’re pretty sure Rodney will enjoy doing anything you’re doing, whether it’s running, hiking, or just chilling on the couch. He’s got plenty of energy but also settles nicely. Rodney is waiting to meet you and he could not be friendlier!

Meet Cole, one of our longest-residing pups, who’s eager to find a home of his own. Growing up in a shelter isn’t easy, especially for a playful puppy like Cole. Though a bit shy around new faces, he’s quick to warm up with some affection and tasty treats. Once he trusts you, he becomes your best friend! Cole adores lap time in the playroom, even if he’s a bit too big for it, and has a special love for other dogs. He’d thrive in a home with a canine companion who can show him the ropes and help burn off his youthful energy. Like any young pup, he has plenty of playful spirit, but he also knows how to settle down with his human friends when the time is right. With a little patience and the right home, Cole has all the potential to be the perfect companion. He just needs someone to see the special dog he is and fall in love with him, just like we have!

A delightful mix of Flemish Giant and French Lop, she’s larger than your average bunny and will need a home with plenty of space to hop, stretch, and lounge in style. Biscuit is a laid-back girl who loves nothing more than munching on veggies—mint is her absolute favorite treat—and relaxing in cozy corners where she can watch the world go by. Like most rabbits, Biscuit isn’t a fan of being picked up, but she adores calm, quiet companionship. She’ll happily accept gentle head pets and reward you with her contented bunny bliss. Litter box trained and neat as can be, One of Biscuit’s most treasured possessions is her beloved stuffed elephant, Alfred. She carries him with her and showers him with unconditional bunny love. Evie (fka "Leva") Update!!

We love hearing updates about BACS alumni and how they're thriving in their new homes! Leva found her forever family last week, and her new parents just shared an exciting update about her first week at home: Hi BACS, This is Debbie and Ralph. 1 week ago today we came into the shelter and adopted little Leva. We just love her so much and she has fit into our family so well. She’s got plenty of energy- never a dull moment for the other dogs. She loves being outside. Even when the other dogs are sleeping in the garage, she’ll be out on the deck in the sun, laying in the dirt, or down the hill sitting in the leaves! It’s super cute. We wanted to thank everyone there for investing so much time and love into Leva. She is so gentle taking snacks, not food obsessed, potty trained, and is a good listener- and loves sleeping out in the sun on our deck. Both Ralph and I look at her and can’t believe she was there for so long- which shows what great care you all gave her. We realized when we got home that Leva sounds a lot like “leave it”- which is one of the commands we use with our dogs to leave something alone- so we shortened her name to Evie. She responded right away- so we felt good about the nickname. A special thanks to Nicki who was so patient with us and Wes our dog when we came into visit. Thank you all again!
