The Berkeley Animal Care Services shelter is responsible for the community's animals in need. We are the volunteers of Berkeley Animal Care Services.

If you are interested in adopting one of the animals featured on this page, please visit or call BACS directly. As we are only volunteers and not employees of the shelter, we may not have the most current information available, although we do try and keep this page as updated as possible. Information regarding adoption fees, criteria and special programs is provided as a courtesy for prospective a

dopters. It is set by the City of Berkeley and Berkeley Animal Care Services, not the volunteers who maintain this page.

Adoption Fees:
Dogs $125.00 / Cats $100 -- include shots, microchip, spay or neuter
Rabbits, BIrds, Exotics: $25
Rodents: $10

60/6/60 Adoption Program, Partnering Senior Animals with Senior Friends -- If you are 60 or older and adopt an animal who is 6 or older, you'll get 60% off the adoption fee! Adoption Criteria:
In order to qualify as an adopter, you must bring proof of home ownership or your rental contract showing you are allowed to have pets before the adoption can be completed. If you're coming to adopt a new family or household pet, please bring your family members or other members of the household with you to the shelter -- including any other dogs in the family. We want to make sure your new dog is a good fit for both 2-leggers and 4-leggers alike.

This is Aussie, a gorgeous and special dog who needs a special adopter. He came to the shelter when he lost his previous owner. He’s full of contradictions: he is shy of handling, but he adores getting out for walks. He loves to pull you along, but he doesn’t like it if you pull him! Aussie will likely do well in a quiet home with someone who likes to read, watch movies, or go on long hikes in the woods. He appears comfortable around other dogs. But he’s not terribly comfortable in new situations or with loud noises. Still, once Aussie is familiar with you, he is very loyal and attentive. He likes affection from people he trusts, especially outside of his kennel safe zone. Aussie also seems housetrained. Come down and meet him to see if you might be his special person. He’s hoping so!

Come on down and meet Rodney, a great dog who is solid in every way. He’s an athletic guy with a completely unflappable personality. Rodney will make a wonderful addition to just about any home. He’s an energetic walker, who also loves to stop and sniff sometimes. He passes other dogs politely and is attentive to his person. And he appears totally housetrained. We’re pretty sure Rodney will enjoy doing anything you’re doing, whether it’s running, hiking, or just chilling on the couch. He’s got plenty of energy but also settles nicely. Rodney is waiting to meet you and he could not be friendlier!

Just like their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle namesakes, this heroic herd has big personalities and an appetite for justice! Whether they’re zooming around their enclosure in an epic training session, squeaking for their next meal of fresh veggies, or snuggling up in their hideouts after a long day of adventuring, these boys are always up to something fun! While they may not battle the Foot Clan, these shell-less heroes do require plenty of care and attention. They need lots of fresh hay for munching and cozy spots for burrowing, daily veggies, and high-quality pellets to keep them in top ninja shape. Social creatures by nature, they thrive on companionship, daily interaction and enrichment—like tunnels, chew toys, and floor time—will keep their curious minds sharp and their little paws busy. Meet Kleo, a beautiful boxer mix with a spirit to match. This girl is high-energy and fun – she loves to engage with and get attention from her human friends. Kleo also loves to get zoomies, both on and off the leash. Plus fetch is her game – she can’t get enough. Add to that the fact that Kleo loves to play with other dogs her own size, and you have the makings of a fantastic companion. Kleo may have a bit of a prey drive for smaller animals, so she will only want to play with evenly matched dogs. But that shouldn’t be too hard to find, with her enthusiasm and zest for life. She appears to be housetrained and is ready to meet you today!

Here is Valentine’s Day love story from exactly a year ago today! Here is what Blondie’s mom Tatiana had to say:

“Blondie was our Valentine last year. We went and saw him a few times before that and decided on Feb 14 to just bring him home. As our family grew to 3, little did we know a new family would be coming at the end of the year. Now we are a family of 4, and Blondie has been so good with all the transitions. We remember when we picked him up, he barely knew how to jump in the car and was all nervous. Now he loves hiking, playing with his friends, cuddling up with his humans. He has always been a rambunctious dog, who always wants to give a lot of love, sometimes too much 😆 He is a great brother to his two sisters. He has been a great addition to our family and very grateful we picked him that day.”

Meet Cole, one of our longest-residing pups, who’s eager to find a home of his own. Growing up in a shelter isn’t easy, especially for a playful puppy like Cole. Though a bit shy around new faces, he’s quick to warm up with some affection and tasty treats. Once he trusts you, he becomes your best friend! Cole adores lap time in the playroom, even if he’s a bit too big for it, and has a special love for other dogs. He’d thrive in a home with a canine companion who can show him the ropes and help burn off his youthful energy. Like any young pup, he has plenty of playful spirit, but he also knows how to settle down with his human friends when the time is right. With a little patience and the right home, Cole has all the potential to be the perfect companion. He just needs someone to see the special dog he is and fall in love with him, just like we have!

A delightful mix of Flemish Giant and French Lop, she’s larger than your average bunny and will need a home with plenty of space to hop, stretch, and lounge in style. Biscuit is a laid-back girl who loves nothing more than munching on veggies—mint is her absolute favorite treat—and relaxing in cozy corners where she can watch the world go by. Like most rabbits, Biscuit isn’t a fan of being picked up, but she adores calm, quiet companionship. She’ll happily accept gentle head pets and reward you with her contented bunny bliss. Litter box trained and neat as can be, One of Biscuit’s most treasured possessions is her beloved stuffed elephant, Alfred. She carries him with her and showers him with unconditional bunny love. Evie (fka "Leva") Update!!

We love hearing updates about BACS alumni and how they're thriving in their new homes! Leva found her forever family last week, and her new parents just shared an exciting update about her first week at home: Hi BACS, This is Debbie and Ralph. 1 week ago today we came into the shelter and adopted little Leva. We just love her so much and she has fit into our family so well. She’s got plenty of energy- never a dull moment for the other dogs. She loves being outside. Even when the other dogs are sleeping in the garage, she’ll be out on the deck in the sun, laying in the dirt, or down the hill sitting in the leaves! It’s super cute. We wanted to thank everyone there for investing so much time and love into Leva. She is so gentle taking snacks, not food obsessed, potty trained, and is a good listener- and loves sleeping out in the sun on our deck. Both Ralph and I look at her and can’t believe she was there for so long- which shows what great care you all gave her. We realized when we got home that Leva sounds a lot like “leave it”- which is one of the commands we use with our dogs to leave something alone- so we shortened her name to Evie. She responded right away- so we felt good about the nickname. A special thanks to Nicki who was so patient with us and Wes our dog when we came into visit. Thank you all again!
