Sunny is a very handsome brown tabby 12 year old who is ready for his moment in the sunshine! He is a little shy, and currently likes to hide inside and underneath things while he figures out his new digs at the shelter - but sit with him for a minute, get to know him, and slowly give him cheek scritches, and you’ll find an incredibly lovely cat with a lot to offer! People say that black cats are hard to photograph, that they seem spooky, and that they aren’t as pretty as other cats. We disagree, and think that black cats are some of the best cats around! Meet Hazel, a spunky little spitfire of a dog. She’s friendly with everybody and super energetic. Hazel loves other dogs and is great with kids. She walks pretty well on leash, pulling a little. She definitely knows where she wants to go, and you can come along for the ride! Hazel is a positive girl who will love just about any home – and we’re pretty sure you’re going to fall in love with her immediately, too. Active families are probably her ideal. We got a great pupdate from one of our for from Joe!

"Hey Berkeley Animal Care Services! I adopted Ralphie the Australian Cattle Dog from BACS in early June and was asked to send an update on him. He is doing great in his new home. His name is Wiley now. He has a house and yard that he roams and goes for adventures with me daily. He is a good, sweet boy. Thank you all for taking care of him up until this point!"

Did you know:

-Black is the most common fur color! The gene for expressing eumelanin—the pigment needed to make black fur—is dominant in black cats. Black coats allow cats to blend better into the night, which helps them hunt prey. This genetic advantage may have allowed black cats to be healthier and more likely to breed.

-Just as genetics plays a role in the color of a cat’s fur, it’s also responsible for the color of their eyes. The same pigment that affects a black cat’s fur also affects their irises. The majority of black cats have irises with yellow/gold, orange/copper, or green pigment.

-If your black cat loves to lounge in the sun, the UV rays can break down the black pigment in the cat's fur, changing it to a rusty color. The affected fur will remain discolored, but once shed, will be replaced by fresh black fur once again.

-Historically, sailors brought cats aboard ships to control rodents that could destroy food stores or damage the ship itself. British and Irish sailors believed a black cat would bring the ship good luck and ensure a safe return home.

-In Scotland, tradition holds that a black cat on the doorstep means money is on the way. The French have a similar association between black cats and financial riches. In Germany, a black cat crossing your path means good luck is on the way.

-Unfortunately, black cats also face cultural superstition that leads to them having difficult adoption outcomes. According to the National Library of Medicine, of all cats in shelters, black cats have the lowest rate of adoption at 10% of any cat. Even as kittens, those with a black coat are the last and least likely to be adopted compared to all other kittens.

Black cats are wonderful companions, playful, sweet, and cuddly little house panthers. But they need you to be their good luck charm! Come meet some today over at BACS!

Odin is so excited that BACS is participating in the Clear the Shelters campaign! Read on to find out more and how to make a donation.

Meet Odin, a high-energy youngster who is very friendly and fun. He is eager to get out of his kennel for walks and loves to play fetch. Odin is very attentive to his handler on walks and does not react to other dogs. He loves to sniff, and does pull some just because he’d like to go faster. He would probably be a great hiking or running buddy, and would love an active household. Like most dogs of his breed, Odin likes having something to do, and should be easy to train because of his focus on the humans nearby. He appears to be housetrained. He’s also very handsome! It's and Madonna is teaching us how to engage in a healthy self-care routine! unbothered by interruptions from volunteers, seeking an audience with this beauty, she sniffs, snacks, and slumbers, with a small break to sharpen her claws, take care of business, and engage in some good natured hissing of "get off my lawn" at the kittens next-door. May we all find such serenity and being in the moment!

Madonna is a sweet senior, 12 years old, a friendly cat who enjoys petting and brushing. She would make an excellent meditation buddy for a calm household!

Boyo boy! This dog is fun! Boyo is very friendly and energetic. He loves to get out for walks, but likes his quality time with humans even more. If you adopt Boyo, he will be the life of your party. He is very outgoing and inquisitive. Boyo likes to chase balls or play with toys. He’d probably make a great hiking buddy, too. He appears to be housetrained. Say hello to Hope! This tripod is very people-friendly and her missing limb doesn’t slow her down one bit. We suspect she grew up dealing with it, and barely even seems to notice. That said, this girl does not require gobs of exercise, just a nice walk periodically will keep her fit and happy.

Hope lost her owner and is looking for a new family to love. She gets a little bit excited passing other dogs, but if you keep moving, she disengages quickly and goes about her business. Hope has a beautiful coat and is very affectionate. Come see for yourself and fall for this beautiful girl today!

Aspen's day out- she had a blast!

Aspen is the bravest dog. She’s scared of most things but if you give her a few minutes she pushes through every time. On her own time.

Even at her most terrified she’s always gentle and sweet and once she’s feeling safe her playful puppy personality really shines.

When being picked up in the morning for her field trip she was NOT interested in getting in the car and got so stressed about driving, she couldn’t even eat her road snacks 😱

At the end of the day (visit to the pet store, 3 hours of fetch, professional investigative sniffari, and a hard nap) she did a complete 180.
Leaping into the car as soon as the door opened and stretching out to relax the whole ride back to BACS. 10/10 passenger. No backseat driving whatsoever.

Exercise helps Aspen be brave. She would be an incredible running coach for anyone looking for a faster sprint time or just a loyal, indefatigable fetch buddy.

Aspen is currently listed as a shepherd mix but I’m pretty sure her DNA test will show she’s a cross between a deer and a cat-- huge baby fawn vibes, loves to cuddle but on her own terms— a loyal, goofy, perfect dog. Still looking for her forever home.🥰

No need to go to Paris to watch the Olympics, we have our very own Paris here at BACS! Paris is 5 month old energetic girl who has already been working on her basic commands. She is very smart and food-motivated for easy learning. Paris is a spirited walker on leash and gets excited to see everything – dogs, people, birds… She would love to play with everybody and everything. Paris also loves to chase a ball, or really just about anything that’s moving quickly across her path. She is also very loving, and will make an incredible companion in just about any home. She does have a little tendency to jump up when she first sees you, so probably will do best in a home without very small children who can be easily toppled. Come meet this sweetheart before she’s gone!

For those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting him, playing tug, walking him, or had him sit on you like he is a small lap dog.... then you know how awesome Jamba is. This total lovebug is Piper. She’s fresh off of being a mom to two puppies, and is now ready to live the good life for herself. Piper is a little shy at first, preferring a slow approach. But she’s very friendly underneath and loves human affection. If you are petting her and then stop, she will give you her paw to let you know to keep on going. Piper is also appreciative of walks, because she appears to be housetrained. Outside, she’s a little bit nervous, and is still getting used to a new environment. But she will follow her human friend, and look to you for reassurance and affection to make sure it’s all ok. You will not find a more gentle and loving companion than sweet Piper.

Meet Steele, a gorgeous silver-coated guy who is one very nice dog. He’s friendly with people and not reactive to other dogs. He likes being out and being active.
