Happy Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week! 🐾

Since 1993 the third week of October has been dedicated to celebrate and recognize veterinary technicians for the numerous contributions vet techs make to the veterinary profession and society.
At the Animal Eye Doctor we’re so grateful to have Jaclyn work side by side with Dr.Boles. She’s been instrumental these past months while we were understaffed- her hard work, love and dedication to our clients and their fur babies is truly the exceptional. Thank you, Jaclyn. We love you!!!

Happy Thursday to all.
We’d like to share another success story.
Winston, the 7 year old Havanese mix, had unilateral cataract surgery. Today Dr. Boles saw Winston for his two-week post operative exam.
She said Winston is looking really good. We couldn’t be happier for Winston and his owners.

We recently saw Jasper in our clinic to have him checked for Pannus.
Pannus is a progressive inflammatory disease of the cornea. Common clinical signs include pigmentation ( brown discoloration ), vascularization ( blood vessel ingrowth ) and opacification ( haziness ) of the cornea. These corneal changes may lead to scarring and at worst, blindness.
The cause of pannus is not known, what we do know is that certain breeds, like German Shepherds, can have a genetic predisposition.
Pannus is considered a form of an autoimmune disease.
Ultraviolet radiation and altitude increases the disease severity - therefor Jasper is seen here wearing eyeglasses.
According to his mom, Jasper has no issues wearing them - we, here at the clinic, think he looks pretty amazing with his shades.

Source of information: Eye Care For Animals 2019

If you have any further questions about Pannus, please do not hesitate to call us at the Animal Eye Doctor.

Yesterday we posted a picture of Jude pre operative - he was going to have cataract surgery in his left eye.
Today his owners brought him back for his 1-day post op. Dr Boles says Jude’s surgery was very successful, he has vision in both eyes now. We couldn’t be happier for Jude and his Pawrents. 🐾

A big shout out to our technicians- Jess and Jaclyn, they are an instrumental part of our amazing team.
They work so hard, with few breaks, to make sure all the pets that are seen get the best care. These two are truly the best. We are so lucky to have them.
Here they are pictured taking a rare break. And, out an about with their own pups.
Happy Friday!

At our clinic we often welcome breeders and their pups to have an OFA exam.
OFA exams are ophthalmic examinations performed by
American College of Veterinary
Ophthalmologist (ACVO)
Diplomates, to assess dogs for the presence or absence of observable hereditary eye disease.
Today Dr. Boles did an OFA exam on these cute 6 week old Australian Shepard pups.

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, marking the emancipation of the last slaves in the United States following the Civil War. Its roots date back to June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas to declare that by executive decree, more than 250,000 enslaved Black people across the state were finally free.

Happy CSR Appreciation Week! This week we are celebrating our front desk staff and giving thanks for all the support they give the clinical and doctor staff each and every day. Myrt has been on our team for about eight years and Anthony and Nicole joined us last summer and in that time they have welcomed many new and returning patients, provided ideas for operation improvements, and often watched over our lovely patients during our curbside protocols. The Animal Eye Doctor is so pleased to have these three wonderful people add their own light to our team and grateful for all they do.

Happy sunny Tuesday everyone! This week we would like to spotlight one of our fabulous technicians, Emily! She was born and raised in Utah and grew up traveling and developing a great love for the outdoors. In elementary school, prior to the new school year her family tradition was traveling the Oregon coast for a few weeks in their VW bus. A year ago she made her dreams a reality and moved from her adventure in Idaho to start a new one here in Oregon, along with her two bunnies- Pico de Gallo and General Lee. For over 8 years, she has worked as a veterinary technician, with the past three plus years spent specializing in Ophthalmology. She has had the opportunity to work with 6 different doctors board certified in Ophthalmology, expanding her learning & skill set as much as possible. We are completely thankful for her hard work with us over this past year and all she has done to assist cultivating our team spirit. On the weekends you’ll catch Emily outside hiking, climbing, paddle boarding, and beach combing.

From all of us at The Animal Eye Doctor, we wish everyone a wonderful day!

We are so happy to share some information about a wonderful rescue organization: Rose City Rabbit Rescue cares for abandoned domestic rabbits rescued in and around Portland, Oregon.

We have known the owner for many years as Dave Marvin has brought bunnies that had eye issues to us.
This week leading up to Easter we want to give them some extra love, we hope you visit their page, if you are looking for a bunny, pls consider rescuing one from Rose City Rabbit Rescue, or help them by donating some money, the veterinary care for these wonderful, sweet bunnies is very costly.
Here’s a link to their page:

According to National Today, it is National Respect Your Cat Day! Here at The Animal Eye Doctor, felines are our second most frequent visitors and it is always exciting to see them come through the red door in all varieties of carriers. In honor of today, we wanted to share some fun cat enrichment facts. Cats are usually overlooked in the enrichment department, but it is very important for their overall wellbeing. According to the Oxford dictionary, enrichment means 'to improve the quality or value of something', in this case the something being an animal’s life. The ASPCA website gives some wonderful DIY enrichment ideas such as building scratching posts, creating treat puzzles, and sharing about bird tv (which you can find on Youtube). Enjoy some pictures of our clinic cats and give your fur babies extra kisses today (if they let you!).

To all the women and to those who identify as women at The Animal Eye Doctor and across the profession: You are a driving force in the field of veterinary medicine, and we see and celebrate you this month and year round.

This March, we honor the female veterinary leaders who have changed the landscape of veterinary medicine, which in many ways has coincided with the expansion of women’s rights throughout society. As women have earned greater equality, pay, and protection on a national level, so too has their influence within veterinary medicine grown.
