Something you may not know about our senior horses!
Many of ours, like Theron, have missing teeth or teeth worn down to the gum line, making it hard or impossible to swallow long stem fiber, i.e., Hay.
We soak 3 to 4 meals daily for them (senior feed and hay pellets), however, they still need chew time that forage gives them.
This video shows Theron chewing hay, making wads of it and then spitting it out (called quidding). He is unable to swallow it due to his dental issues.
This costs us extra time and money. Time spent cleaning up and disposing of the wasted hay, and money spent on the hay.
Theron is just 1 of several of our horses who quid and waste hay. We use chopped forage and hay pellets that are well soaked as forage alternatives, but hay must also be available to them when pasture is limited and non-existent.
