Donating Blood Saves Lives! 🐶

Meet Millie! 🐾 This brave 11-year-old shih-tzu came to us through our ER service, and needed immediate help due to severe anemia, leading to her first blood transfusion. After the thorough evaluation by Dr. Jones, Millie was transferred to our internal medicine team with Dr. Peña for further care.

During her stay, she required another transfusion, but we’re thrilled to share that Millie is now back home and doing fantastic! 💖 Her owner expressed immense gratitude for our blood donor program, which made it possible for Millie to get the vital support she needed.

Our cardio team hasn't missed a beat post-Halloween! 🎃

Our amazing Cardiology crew had some fun pretending to work on their "patient" – aka Rebecca, one of our technicians! Dr. Tschosik and Dr. LaRose, along with technicians Jody, Amanda, Rebecca, and department coordinator Julia, showed off their teamwork and expertise with a bit of humor. 😄

As Halloween quickly approaches, it’s important to remember that several popular treats are considered toxic to pets. Some of these include:

🎃 Chocolate
🎃 Sugar-free candies or gum containing xylitol
🎃 Raisins (especially chocolate-covered)
🎃 Candy Corn
🎃 Caramel Apples
🎃 Macadamia Nuts

Our trip to WNC was both heartwarming and eye-opening. Members of our team visited several locations, bringing much-needed supplies to those affected by Hurricane Helene, including our sister hospital South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty. 🚐💙

We also made a stop at Swannanoa Valley Animal Hospital, where they’re facing significant challenges but are ready to serve. Thank you for your donations and continued support as we work together to make a difference in the community! 💪🐾

Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts 🔊

The Upstate Vet team is organizing the collection of essential supplies for our veterinary medicine family in Western North Carolina. The veterinary teams in WNC are working hard to support the region, and your help can make a big difference!

We will begin making trips to deliver supplies on Monday, October 7th. We plan to keep up with the changing needs of their community over the next several weeks and will share updates as we can.

Preliminary requests include:
✅ Bottled water
✅ Non-perishable food, snacks, drinks (for stranded employees)
✅ Medical supplies
✅ Pest control, wasps are a big issue
✅ Pet food (any type)
✅ Collars, leashes, ID tags, carriers/crates, litter, bowls
✅ Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids, laxatives, Benadryl, Zyrtec
✅ Peroxide, Band-Aids, sunscreen, aloe, bug spray
✅ Dental care
✅ Hygiene products
✅ Soap, hand sanitizer
✅ Feminine products
✅ Baby wipes

: Protect Your Cat with a Breakaway Collar!

Cats are remarkable athletes! 🐈 When they aren't sleeping, these little speed gymnasts can get into potentially hazardous situations.

One instance could be their collars catching on protruding objects, trapping or injuring them. Cats may also try to escape their collar and catch their leg or their lower jaw in the collar, making it hard for them to move. If anything like this happens to a cat without anyone around, it can be extremely dangerous for them.

Some people think collars are not necessary for cats that don't go outside or that they won't tolerate them. But, cats can get out accidentally, so for their safety we recommend getting them used to wearing one. Breakaway collars save cat lives! ❤😸

📢 Exciting News from Upstate Vet Oncology!

Our Oncology department is expanding to better serve our community. We’re thrilled to introduce Dr. Julia Medland, our newest oncologist!

🎓 Dr. Medland earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from North Carolina State University and completed her residency in medical oncology at the University of Minnesota.

🩺 With a deep interest in lymphoma, osteosarcoma, and multidisciplinary cancer care, Dr. Medland is dedicated to maintaining an excellent quality of life for her patients while honoring the human-animal bond.

🌳 Outside of work, Dr. Medland enjoys spending time with her husband and cat, and loves backcountry camping, hiking, reading, and of course, napping.

Dogs can’t tell us when they’re not feeling well, but their body language can speak volumes. 🐾 Here are some signs that your dog might be sick and needs medical attention:

❌ Lethargy: If your normally active dog suddenly becomes sluggish or uninterested in activities they usually enjoy, it could be a sign of illness.
❌ Changes in Posture: A hunched back, tucked tail, or stiffness can indicate pain or discomfort.
❌ Restlessness: Pacing, inability to settle, or constant shifting can be a sign that something is wrong.
❌ Excessive Panting or Drooling: While some dogs pant or drool naturally, excessive amounts, especially when it’s not hot or after exercise, could be a sign of distress.
❌ Avoiding Touch: If your dog flinches or moves away when you try to pet them, they might be experiencing pain.

Meet Ponyo! 🐾

After suffering serious injuries from a dog attack, Ponyo's health took a complicated turn when he developed an acute kidney injury (AKI). His primary veterinarian at Electric City Animal Clinic recognized the severity and referred him to Upstate Vet for specialized care.

Ponyo spent a challenging week in our ICU, where his kidneys initially struggled to respond to treatment. However, with around-the-clock monitoring, intravenous fluids, and nutritional support, he made a remarkable recovery! 🙌

Thanks to the teamwork of our incredible critical care, emergency, and patient care teams, Ponyo is back on his paws. 🐾
