Read more for an update on Jack Dog Farms and we're looking for volunteers for a Saturday May 9th Farm Get Dirty Day, 11-4! We'll supply the food!
Many folks have been interested in helping out with Jack Dog Farms. This year has been a year of great transition for the farm and for me, as many of you know. I originally planned to start the Homestead Collective, but unfortunately, the timing has not worked right for this. Thus, I’ve been envisioning a soft launch for a Homestead Collective (HC) Version 1.0 in 2015 where people are putting in a little money just to cover expenses, growing tons of veggies together, learning in a hands-on, but informal environment, and just having fun.
Here’s what I imagine. A small group of 6-8 of us communally planting, maintaining and harvesting the farm/garden. Around a little under half the space will be committed to a partnership with a local program that guides latino community members through the gardening learning process… the rest of the lot will be planted with food for us to eat. We’ll all receive a plethora of veggies both for eating but also preserving. I’m planning at least 2 classes, and at least 2 events this Summer. HC members will receive these classes for free.
I understand people have different time and money capacities, so I think these two options will help us get the expenses covered for the season (seeds, seedlings, organic fertilizer, mulch, compost, water, etc), but also get the work taken care of. I’m hoping to move a long and find this small group of 6-8 folks to work with on this project, quite quickly. So please let me know if you are interested ASAP. I’ll organize a small meeting where we can touch base, and then we can move forward with getting the garden going!
MORE DEETS!!!
Two membership options:
*2 days a week (4 hour shifts)=$95/for the season for food
*1 day a week (4 hour shift) = $145/for the season for food
Potential shifts
(I can shift these days of the week and potentially add an evening shift (like 5-8:30) if it’s needed. I’d prefer to have specific work times, because it’s easier to work into schedules, it’s more fun to work with other people, and it’ll be easier to communicate garden needs)
*Mondays 10-2pm
*Wednesdays 10-2pm
*Saturdays 11-3
Upcoming Big Work Days!
*Sat, May 2nd (need at least 2 people for this)
*Sat, May 9th (as many people as possible)
More to be scheduled with you!
Opportunities
*Intro to Permaculture Class for free (To be scheduled)
*Invites to Permaculture Network events
*We will focus on high yield and also high costs veggies, you’ll learn how to plant using the biointensive method, both utilizing companion planting, hexagonal planting, heavy mulching etc.
*JDF focuses on permaculture methods for growing. You’ll learn a ton about growing in this style, conserving water, and be able to implement this on your own site.
*We'll learn how to preserve together, from fermentation to canning.
