We had a great day harvesting fresh food for our first CSA pickup. We were pretty happy with the early season haul, which included: baby pak choi, baby beet greens, radishes and greens, chives (pictured), basil, strawberries, and mulberries.

What is your favorite way to use early summer greens?

Farm Happenings: We're busy getting plants in the ground! Leeks galore (we also planted 17 lbs of potatoes--dreaming of potato leek soup!) and all those beautiful tomatoes we seeded back in early April!

If you're interested in volunteering at the farm with planting and watering and singing (oh yes, so much singing), drop us an email [email protected] or a FB message and we'll let you know when we could use help!

Seeding (and farming in general) is a great practice in patience. We can't wait to see these little green sprouts pushing up out of the soil--and then filling CSA shares with delicious hot and sweet peppers!

Hello All!
We hope everyone is getting as excited as we are as spring. The wonderful deluge of rain has brought on scenes of green and abundance that are sure to nourish our souls and bellies.

This year, Jack Dog Farms is going to be run as more of a community garden space. We’re looking for 10 wonderful folks/families to pick either garden plots/communal growing.

The site has not had any pesticides for more than 10 years, and has been utilized for organic growing for the last 4 years. Over these years, we’ve amended the soil with compost, mulching, organic fertilizers, cover crops and more. We utilized only organic seeds and seedlings. We hope to keep it this way, in an effort to heal this small space of earth, and to create a safe place to grow really healthy vegetables and fruits for our families.

The DEETS:
*You receive a sizable plot with incredibly fertile, healthy soil. and/or the ability to communally grow with the Farm Club
*The ability to ask questions of a long-term grower
*Access to some perennial herbs (oregano, sage, chives, mint, lemon balm) and berries that grow in the garden
*Potential involvement in garden events so you can geek out on mulch and basil
*One FREE acupuncture session with the adjacent acupuncturist, Sabrina Miller
*Access to water for your garden

Cost: $60
---This covers the cost of water from the city and also helps the landowner pay for their very high property taxes, allowing us all to utilize the space and keep some additional green space, beautifying our city.
IF you are interested or have ANY questions,, please contact Corrine Bruning at [email protected]. If you know someone who might be interested, please forward this information onto them!

Read more for an update on Jack Dog Farms and we're looking for volunteers for a Saturday May 9th Farm Get Dirty Day, 11-4! We'll supply the food!

Many folks have been interested in helping out with Jack Dog Farms. This year has been a year of great transition for the farm and for me, as many of you know. I originally planned to start the Homestead Collective, but unfortunately, the timing has not worked right for this. Thus, I’ve been envisioning a soft launch for a Homestead Collective (HC) Version 1.0 in 2015 where people are putting in a little money just to cover expenses, growing tons of veggies together, learning in a hands-on, but informal environment, and just having fun.

Here’s what I imagine. A small group of 6-8 of us communally planting, maintaining and harvesting the farm/garden. Around a little under half the space will be committed to a partnership with a local program that guides latino community members through the gardening learning process… the rest of the lot will be planted with food for us to eat. We’ll all receive a plethora of veggies both for eating but also preserving. I’m planning at least 2 classes, and at least 2 events this Summer. HC members will receive these classes for free.

I understand people have different time and money capacities, so I think these two options will help us get the expenses covered for the season (seeds, seedlings, organic fertilizer, mulch, compost, water, etc), but also get the work taken care of. I’m hoping to move a long and find this small group of 6-8 folks to work with on this project, quite quickly. So please let me know if you are interested ASAP. I’ll organize a small meeting where we can touch base, and then we can move forward with getting the garden going!

MORE DEETS!!!
Two membership options:
*2 days a week (4 hour shifts)=$95/for the season for food
*1 day a week (4 hour shift) = $145/for the season for food

Potential shifts
(I can shift these days of the week and potentially add an evening shift (like 5-8:30) if it’s needed. I’d prefer to have specific work times, because it’s easier to work into schedules, it’s more fun to work with other people, and it’ll be easier to communicate garden needs)
*Mondays 10-2pm
*Wednesdays 10-2pm
*Saturdays 11-3

Upcoming Big Work Days!
*Sat, May 2nd (need at least 2 people for this)
*Sat, May 9th (as many people as possible)
More to be scheduled with you!

Opportunities
*Intro to Permaculture Class for free (To be scheduled)
*Invites to Permaculture Network events
*We will focus on high yield and also high costs veggies, you’ll learn how to plant using the biointensive method, both utilizing companion planting, hexagonal planting, heavy mulching etc.
*JDF focuses on permaculture methods for growing. You’ll learn a ton about growing in this style, conserving water, and be able to implement this on your own site.
*We'll learn how to preserve together, from fermentation to canning.

Thanks for reading! If you are interested in the collective, please email me ASAP. If you are able to volunteer, that'd be fantastic, please also email me and let me know that you can make it! I hope you are having a wonderful spring! Also, if you know someone who you think would be interested in this, please have them email me. My info is [email protected] (or corrine.bruning at gmail.com, if email's obscured)...

Thanks and peace to you all!

We've been up to big changes at Jack Dog Farms! Today marks the launch of our new Homegrown Learning Series!

Over the past few years, we've taken of lot of classes, and learned a ton about growing food through managing the farm. We're looking to share that knowledge with you through our Homegrown Learning Series and building what we're calling a Homestead Collective.

The Homegrown Learning Series will be a 10 class program where you'll learn how to design, install, harvest, and maintain a permaculture garden, how to meal plan, preserve and extend your harvest as long as possible. We'll first meet in class, and then apply our learning hands-on after. Classes are frequent through May and then more scattered through the rest of the growing season.

The classes will be paired with a generous food share (much like a CSA, but more food than you'd get with a CSA, so you can preserve some). This will run from Early/Mid-June - Mid-October.

If you'd like to learn more, head on over to: www.jackdogfarms.com.

It's a week of lots of work at Jack Dog Farms. The day after we erect our DIY Hoop House, unexpected intense winds blew it down. You can see the damage in the below pictures.

We're looking for help to re-erect it tomorrow. Please let us know if you're available. Feel free to give us a call at 612-418-2702 or email us at [email protected]
