We totally missed our usual holiday post yesterday!! 🫣 We were busy with food and water dishes and cleaning out litter boxes. But it is a “Holiday Weekend so we don’t think it’s too late. Fireworks can be stressful for cats, and up to 54% of cats show signs of distress when they hear them. Cats may react to fireworks with an evolutionary response to loud noises, which they associate with danger. Signs that your cat may be afraid of fireworks include:
Dilated pupils
Hissing or low grumbling
Withdrawing from you
Hiding
Arching their back and crouching
Pinning their ears back
Making slow low movements Here are some tips to help keep your cat calm during fireworks:
Keep your cat inside (Of course this should be the norm) but if they have a catio or lanai you might want to close it for the evening. Mask the sound
Close windows, pull the curtains or blinds, and turn on a fan. You can also try masking the sound with white noise, gentle voices, or soothing music. If your cat is used to the sound, you can try turning on the TV or radio, but make sure it's not too loud.
Distract your cat
Have toys and treats ready to take your cat's mind off the fireworks. You can try feather toys on a string for a game of chase, or puzzle toys for hiding treats.
Give your cat space
Expect your cat to head for their favorite safe space, such as under the bed or in a closet, and you can hang out nearby. Don't feel you have to touch or hold them if they aren't comfortable with that.
Stay calm
Cats are very perceptive and if they notice you're behaving unusually, they'll sense something is up. If they see that the fireworks have no effect on you, this may help decrease their anxiety.

On Monday, I received a call from a longtime client stating she was in need of a huge favor. She was experiencing a medical emergency and was headed to the emergency room. Her primary concern was her kitty. It just so happened she was headed to the emergency room that I work at! I met her at the emergency room to retrieve her house key and put her mind at ease that all she had to do was focus on her own health. I assured her that for as long as it was necessary, I would take care of her cat.

Ironically, Cheryl received a similar call yesterday! One of her clients had fallen and was taken to the hospital. The client’s first call was to Cheryl to ask for assistance to take care of her kitty while recovering in the hospital. Cheryl promised her that she would care for her cat for as long as necessary.

Our primary concern is (and always will be) the safety and care for the cats. In turn, this gives peace of mind to our clients so they can focus on their recovery. Both Cheryl and I consider it a privilege that our clients reached out to us first to care for their beloved four-legged kids. We wish both of our clients a quick and full recovery. ❤️🐾
