A nonprofit Siberian husky and cat rescue organization based in Virginia and run by volunteers and donations. We operate by donation and volunteers.
Pet Harbor is a non-stock, nonprofit Virginia animal rescue organization. We have no paid employees. The animals in our care are fostered in our volunteers' homes as we do not have a shelter.

Pet Harbor's mission is to save lives of Siberian huskies on death row in animal shelters. Most animal shelters are fabulous partners in accomplishing that mission. It is always a pleasure working with the wonderful folks at Richmond Animal Care and Control, and the City of Richmond never suffers from a shortage of homeless Siberians. Our most recent pull from Richmond shelter is Stuart, an absolutely perfect dog. He has the most awesome of personalities, and we are grateful Richmond shelter asked for our help. Stuart arrived at the shelter badly matted, with f***s intertwined in the mats. Today, he met our groomer, The Wag Shack, who is simply the best of the best. Check out Stuart before & after. Thank you to all essential components of our village! Now let's find Stuart a home!
Our event scheduled for August 17 has been canceled.

We share this for the comedic value. Obviously we don't condone lying to landlords. Other than that, we think this is hilarious!

If you're in the Fredericksburg area, we found a FANTASTIC groomer today! The Wag Shack LLC. Check out what they did for our Katsi, our wooly Siberian, today. Not only did she do an incredibly amazing groom, but we were shocked at the low price, too! https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=122166317948194600&id=61555838002062&mibextid=WC7FNe&rdid=cPWnxEj6l3TT2aR7
Please forgive the length of this. Probably everyone has heard about the plight of animal rescues and shelters. In 2020 and 2021, everybody adopted. We were all home during the pandemic, and people wanted furry companionship. From 2022 until now and continuing, adoptions are not happening, and dogs are being surrendered to animal shelters in astronomical numbers. Dogs adopted during the pandemic were, like the rest of us, stuck at home without socialization or training but with their people 24/7. Then, boom, we go back to the office. The dogs end up in the shelter. They're not good with other dogs because for two years, they didn't have exposure to them. They suffer from separation anxiety because for two years, they were with their humans 24/7. They aren't trained because training facilities, like everybody else, were closed.
So since about mid 2022, all day every day, shelters are overfull and begging rescues to help, which, of course, we would love to do and which is our mission, but when nobody adopts, we don't have the capacity. Furthermore, when dogs are in the rescue OVER A YEAR, our foster families naturally are discouraged and quit fostering. Who can blame them? Who would think they'd be fostering a perfect Siberian for over a year? I cannot imagine what it would be like working in a shelter now. That has to be one of the hardest things in the world. When rescue can't help them, nobody adopts, and they're over capacity, there are no options for the dogs. Animal shelter workers often give the dogs their last loving. Those workers are heroes.
If it isn't bad enough rescues have to say no to perfectly adoptable dogs in shelters in Virginia and the surrounding area all day long, shelters all across the United States are asking us for help. Today, we opened our email to a plea from a Florida shelter. Yesterday, it was Texas. It doesn't stop. What has stopped is emails, phone calls, and inquiries about adopting. Every shelter, every rescue organization. We're all having the same issue.
Why am I telling you this? To tell you if you have ever considered adopting, now is the time to do it. In my lifetime, I've never seen anything like this. Although there have been periods of low adoptions or high surrenders, it's never been anywhere close to this bad before. Now is the time to adopt. Adopt from a rescue organization or from a shelter. When you adopt, make sure you have done your homework. It doesn't help the dog, you, or anyone if you adopt and then surrender the dog. So do your homework and then adopt.
Thank you for listening.

Leashes save lives. There is never a good reason to let a Siberian husky off leash in unconfined areas. You think your dog likes running free? Sure. My child likes playing in the highway. But should I let him? The risks are too great. If you care about your Siberian, use a leash.

We had intended to start posting a particular series of videos and photos on our page today, but with the cold weather upon us, we thought this a bit more fitting. Aurora, formerly Pet Harbor's D'Auria, was adopted almost eight years ago. We require annual updates from our adopters. For her 7th annual post-adoption update, Aurora's family sent this video of their adventures. Aurora's life is continuously full of adventure, a life tailormade for a Siberian husky!
Happy Thanksgiving! To start your holiday warm & fuzzy, here is a video of Pet Harbor's Marina with her little girl.

What a treat! Lucia, available for adoption, got to swim at the Doris Buffett Pool Soggy Dog Swim today in Fredericksburg, proceeds to benefit Fredericksburg SPCA.
Disclaimer: We do not do surprise birthday adoptions. This is not that. This situation is a foster family who has had this dog 8 months. The son in the family is very bonded to the dog & the dog to him. They adopted him. The adoption just happened to coincide with his birthday. So Swifty became a birthday present. The family was camping the weekend of the birthday. We did the real contract for the parents and made a nonbinding "contract" specifically for the boy so he would believe Swifty is HIS dog. So here is a video the family took of the boy learning his foster dog is now officially his dog and reading the contract. Maybe not for you but for me, I had to have tissues. Just sayin'.
