Treats, yes, but in moderation! It’s fine for up to 10% of your cat’s calories to come from treats. But keep in mind that a 12 lb. cat requires, on average, 250 calories a day. That means treats should make up no more than 25 calories.

TIP TUESDAY – Some of us have cats that love to knock things down from high places. Save your plants and china by placing a few of her own toys on a table or mantle. Give her, her own shelf, specifically for that purpose and let her push toys onto the floor. Make it interactive by putting the toys back up onto the shelf for her to knock down again.

The “ears” have it. Wax build-up or bad odor in your cat’s ears are not the only things to prompt a vet visit.

• Persistent scratching or pawing the ear area.

The National Adopt a Cat Month was formed by American Humane to encourage people to stop buying cats and, instead, adopt them from shelters. The month selected for the adoption drive was June, since a lot of cats tend to reproduce during this month and, since a cat can birth up to seven kittens, it’s not a surprise that most of them often end up in animal shelters. American Humane kickstarted this adoption month in the hopes of spreading awareness regarding the rescuing and adoption of cats.

Summer is coming and so are fleas. Contrary to popular belief, fleas do not jump from cat to cat. Once a flea jumps on your cats, it makes itself at home there for its entire life. Keep in mind, if you live in a hot state like Florida, the natural flea meds don’t work as well.

Try Technology if boredom is an issue for your cat. You may want to investigate some tablet apps, DVDs, or YouTube videos made for felines. They are designed to engage your cat’s prey drive and help alleviate boredom. Note, however, that too much visual stimulation can lead to frustration when there is no reward involved. Be sure YOU regularly engage your cat in interactive play so he can enjoy the thrill of capturing “prey”.

A couple of interesting CAT FACTS: Cats spend an average of 15 hours a day sleeping while some cats sleep up to 20 hours a day. This means cats will spend approximately 70 percent of their lives asleep!

The average, healthy house cat can run at the remarkable speed of about 30 mph over short distances. This means that a cat can easily outpace superstar runner Usain Bolt!

It’s time to give your cat a CATIO!! They are now being created by several different companies. When choosing the best location for their catio, consider:
How much space is available?

The amount of light? A sunny/partial sunny area is best, and you can use a shade-cloth.

How will your cat access the catio? You can make a personal delivery or get a cat door in one of your house’s windows or doors. That’s my favorite since then they don’t need me to get in and out.

4 simple tips to create positive energy for both you and your cat.

Find the power spot – put a heavy, high, cat tree away from a room entrance and near a wall with a commanding view of their territory.

Yin & Yang energy – a cozy bed in a quiet room, daily playtime, and a perch near a window (an outside Catio is nice).

Correct Litter Box placement – out of human direct view but cats need to see who is coming.

Water Fountains & faucets – flow and sound create vitality in a cat.

Food for Pets in Need – sometimes it’s food for feral colonies, sometimes for people who can’t afford to feed their pets, and sometimes it’s a local animal rescue or shelter. Wherever the need, find it and give them bags and cans of cat food and litter. When you are shopping in the cat aisle, what’s on sale/BOGO’s? Buy some bags, cans, litter and drop them off at your local rescue or shelter. Most have a program set up to help their animals, feral colonies and individuals that come by for help.

Mealtime Security – Humans are social eaters, so we line our cats’ food bowls up next to each other. This works for some cats, but not all. If you have several cats, you may notice that the cat lowest on the totem pole eats less or angles himself so he can see another cat approaching while he eats. Separating the bowls into different rooms or putting them higher up will help cats lower in the pecking order to feel more secure while eating.

Truth is you CAN herd cats. You can even get them to jump through hoops or climb ladders. It’s called Feline Agility. Even if you don’t enter them in a competition, it’s a great way to bond and entertain your cat at home. None of my cats want to enter the competition. Maybe your cat could be a winner!

Here are a few cringey things your cat wants you to STOP doing.

#1 – Putting all Their Cat Toys in One Basket – where in nature is all the prey in one location or always in plain sight.

#2 – Wiggling the Cat Toy in Their Face – prey mostly moves away from cats as opposed to moving towards them. Remember a toy to you but prey to the cat hunting.

#3 – Expecting Them to Obey – cats are not dogs. Think of your cat being more like a squirrel or raccoon. They might do what you want for food or threats, but obey?

Do you have an anxious cat? Soothing music might be just the thing to take the edge off an anxious cat’s mind. One study conducted at the University of Portugal, cats undergoing surgery had headphones placed on their ears. When classical music was played, their heart rate decreased. A sign that the song had a soothing effect. Rock & Roll, on the other hand, increased their hear rate.
