"Rice and any grain for carnivores is not species appropriate at all.

Humans have the ability through the mouth with our teeth and jaw and the fact that our saliva contains amylase. Our stomach acid is higher in pH. Both dogs and cats have short and straight colons which I call a "p**p chute" and the lining is smooth.

Since grains cannot be processed properly in the upper digestive tract of carnivores, this can lead to damage of the colon lining and cause IBD or worse (for cats) megacolon.

I had a cat with megacolon and it broke my heart to watch him deal with it. I was not financially able to have parts of his colon removed but then again, I don't know that I would have gone that route even if I had all the money in the world.

Grains in cat and dog food is a bad idea.

Dogs can have limited non-starchy veggies and they can have certain fruits but no grains at all. The inability to break down that much fiber is problematic.

The human body does well with grains - assuming they are original grains, not GMO and hybrid (like wheat hybrids where the entire plant does not resemble it's origins). Despite the fear-mongering among the carnivore/keto crowd, grains are healthy if you choose whole grains, organic grains, and grains that are minimally altered from their original.

We have a problem with the food system as a whole and I could easily dive into how we can fix it but there are many great videos and articles on regenerative farming that benefit all species.

But please don't feed grains to your dog and especially not to cats. Cats have no need for carbohydrates as they have the innate ability to convert protein to carbs via gluconeogenesis.

Cats also have requirements for arachadonic acid that humans do not. It is higher in the omega fatty acids for them than ours, we make our own.

So, no grains in your pet food regardless of what Purina, Hill's, Royal Canin, General Mills or any other pet food company state.

Make your food if you want. Buy lightly cooked or raw food from a smaller company but make sure there are no grains and research all pet food before you make it or buy it."

I Snagged this from another post. I took out the references to FB groups. Thank you Liz.
