A good reminder for the upcoming cold weather.

Winter can be tough on the oldest member of the herd; the article below offers a few valuable tips to keep your older horses happy and healthy through the cold weather season courtesy of our friends at Equus Magazine and AAEP member Dr. David Trachtenberg:https://equusmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2022/11/REV-EQ_EXTRA-VOL76-Winter-Care_fnlp.pdf

In particular, Dr. Trachtenberg recommends focusing on the two areas of winter management that can have the biggest influence on the health of older horses—feeding and blanketing.

09/11/2022

Good news Platinum lovers….the annual 15% off is being offered for November AND January orders!! Please place the orders no later than Nov 29. January orders must be placed by Nov 29 for the 15% discount as well, but we can make changes to the order if need be. Jan order will be placed toward the end of that month so you will receive it in February.

Brown's Mobile Vet has resisted raising prices for services but due to rising costs of goods, shipping, gas, etc there will be a minimal increase effective immediately. Thank you for your understanding.

Researchers found blanketed horses during a Wisconsin winter ate 8% less free-choice hay than their unblanketed peers while maintaining similar body conditions.

I reserve the right to decline to work on any horses I deem aggressive or unsafe for my safety, the safety of the animal, and the safety of the owner. This also applies to dentals.

I know several who have stopped vaccinating their horses thinking it wasn't necessary any more but remember, many parents did the same with measles..

Despite the existence of highly effective vaccines, cases are on the rise. It’s up to veterinarians to educate horse owners that this vector-borne disease still poses a very real threat.

With the excessive heat advisory we are going to have the next 2 days I would like to remind everyone some simple rules to keep their horses healthy.
1. Provide water at all times. If your horse isn’t a big drinker or you tend to worry soak their hay in water before you feed them. This will ensure they are getting more fluids in their body and are keeping hydrated.
2. Provide a salt block. Horses need them year round but especially during the summer. When you sweat you lose a lot of salt.
3. If horses are standing out in the sun and don’t have a shelter move them into the shade. Wild horses will wander till they find a comfortable place but our domesticated friends don’t have that luxury.
4. Spray their backs down with water and put a fan on them. Even if you hose your horse down use a sweat scraper to remove excess water as water can actually act as a blanket and trap in heat.
5. Provide as much air flow as possible. Open up barn doors and/or windows and use fans. Barns can be horribly humid and feel hotter than outside. The more air flow you can get the better it will feel and the more comfortable your horse will feel.
6. Use fly spray, shoofly leggins, and fly masks. The hotter or more humid it is the more flies will bite. Horses stomping, running around the paddock/fields are expending more energy and only getting hotter and more uncomfortable. Are you cooler walking/running around on hot humid days or laying in a hammock?
7. Be smart about riding times, duration, and activity level. Early mornings and late evenings are generally cooler times of the day, keep the rides short and light, and if your horse isn’t fit avoid riding them during these hot days. Think of it this way: marathon runners are going to have less issues running in the heat than a couch potato!
8. If your horse has a longer coat buy clippers and shave them!!
Stay cool my friends😎

When you vaccinate your horses this spring please be sure to add rabies to your list! Rabies is present in North Iowa and you don't want it on your vet's differential list if your horse is sick. The only way to confirm if they have the disease is to send in the head. Nobody wants that. Still not convinced? Click on the link and watch the video of the fox sneaking up the horse grazing in the pasture!

March is a good time to vaccinate your horses for the year! Whether you have a vet do it or you do it yourself please make sure your vaccine combo has the core vaccines present.

According to the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), core vaccines include Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis, tetanus, and West Nile virus. This covers all of your mosquito borne diseases. Unfortunately, West Nile is NOT present in many of the 5 way vaccines!! So be sure to check that you are vaccinating for it as West Nile was reported in Cerro Gordo last year. Finally horses, like people, are prone to tetanus so they will need to be vaccinated yearly.

Pasture pets, trail riding around home, and those that do not travel very much usually only need the core vaccines. If you show a lot, board your horse in a barn where others come in and out frequently then you may want to consider adding influenza and herpes to your core vaccines. 😁

With the up-and-coming impending cold it's time to talk about how to keep horses warm. For those teeth chattering days it may be time to blanket your horses even if you don't normally do so. There are a lot of myths out there about blanketing horses but they are just that..myths. It is perfectly acceptable to throw on a blanket as we get into the negative numbers and then pull them off when we return to normal winter temps. Never bought a blanket for your horse before? You will need to measure from the center of their chest all the way on one side of their body to the center of their tail whatever that number is is the blanket size you need. In a pinch you can buy polar fleece and stitch it together for a make shift blanket.

Another thing you can do to keep the horses warm is to provide continuous feed as the temps drop. Horses are unique in that as long as they're eating they will generate heat in their body and stay warm!

Make sure your horse as adequate shelter to get out of the wind and/or snow. Having a wind block can really make a big difference.

So how do I know if my horse is cold? There are several ways to tell. First and most obvious is if parts of or their whole body is shaking. They are extremely cold at this point. Most of the time you are more likely going to see them act silly, bucking, or running around like they are nutty. You can also check their ears..if you grab an ear and it's cold, they are cold. Stay warm! We are expecting some down right chilly weather. 🥶
