We are more than just dog walkers….
Constantly, we hear that a hunter brought in a buddy's dog, who seemed to follow the 3 hr old blood trail and still didn't recover the deer.
Well here's why….
Any dog has the ability to follow a trail, but it is SO MUCH more than that.
With the exception of a few, most top tracking teams have spent years training.
First, the dog….
They were selected as a puppy for their breed, and then their prey drive and work ethic were developed and nurtured. They were taught that they can follow blood, but then trained to follow a scent not visible to the naked eye, that is specific to their deer. Hundreds of hours of practice tracks, obedience training and honing in their skills goes into making them the dog that they are.
Second, the tracker.
Like most of you, they have been a hunter their whole life. They have gone to symposiums, seminars, classes and group training days. They have an extensive knowledge of deer anatomy, shot placement and appropriate wait times. They are familiar with most broadheads and bullets. They understand what each one of these does upon impact. After a 5 min phone call, most trackers will be able to tell you where you hit the deer, how far it will go and how long you should wait. They are right most of the time.
Third…. The team
They have trained and worked together for years. They have an unusually strong bond. The dog understands their handler and what they expect. The tracker can read their dog unlike anyone else. If their head is 6in above the ground instead of 2, they're on a predator's trail. If they whip their head in a certain direction, they just alerted. If they walk this way, they're on the trail, if they walk that way they're off. The tracker can read even the tiniest little nuances about their dog that even another tracker could not.
Separately, they are very capable. Together they are relentless. Walking hundreds of miles every season, they are exhausted but addicted, so they go on.
They lose sleep, time with their families and for a lot of trackers, money. It's not a job, it's a passion that they strive to perfect year after year.
So maybe, before you decide to let your buddy's dog have a go, consider having a trained, certified, tracking dog team run the line first.
Good luck to all of our hunters!
