Gally being laid off for 3 weeks gave us a little more time in the woods.

1. We see squirrels
2. We see fawns
3. Amber has fallen asleep after sleepless nights in the blind and apparently deer walked through 🤣

We are ready to get back out again as soon as Gally gives us the go ahead. Watch out second archery!

“ATTA BOYYY REDDD‼️” #✌️✌️ is on the tailgate. Lil Red took us 590 yards thru woods, across a back road, and into the swamp in about 10 minutes to find the buck laid up in the middle of the swamp. This buck was NOT getting recovered without a good tracking dog. The water the last stretch of this track smelled like 💩 and was ankle deep. Good dogs don’t struggle too bad in moving water but that stinky swamp water worries me because it smells like deer gut. Red said hold my leash bro, he’s in the middle. 💪💪🦌

Good girl Luci!

Good girl Luci!

26 hours post shot! Hunter made what appeared to be a good shot close to the heart area without a pass through. Said he had good blood till it crossed a creek and found his broken arrow and one final splattering of blood! That’s where we picked up the track! And we had Zero blood the only sign I had was the tells I was getting from Luci!

I recognized the speed she was working and knew she was working the track at a very slow pace. Up a steep hill I was confident she was on it. Then once up top she dropped down into lower laying area but shortly after back up to another higher level. Doubting at this point I circle her all the way back and let her take me that way again just to see if she shows me the same way twice. And she does! So we continue get back up top and she slowly starts milling around shoving her nose deep beneath the leaves I recognize 2 things Luci is struggling but also the wounded deer was right here 26 hours ago! She’s going in circles trying to figure it out. So I start pointing at likely exit routes and she checks them nope she comes back, again nope she comes back . Third time she don’t come back so now I can follow her. We went in total like this 300 yards or more. Then I spotted the deer 30-40 yards ahead but wasn’t quite sure so I didn’t yell out we got him till I was sure. Tough tracks like this make me feel like we did our job! The easy ones are nice but we do enjoy putting the pieces of a puzzle together now and then on a tough track! The key tell I saw on this track was her deliberate meticulous pace( she does nothing slow) except when she is tracking a difficult track. We got it done!

"I had a good shoulder shot! There is blood everywhere!"
***BREAKING NEWS***

That doesn't exist 🤦🏽‍♀️

Then the next question....

"How good is your dog?"

My exact reply 😒:
"She is only as good as your shot...."

Guys, shoulder shots are PROVEN to be one of the LEAST fatal hits on a deer, go for higher percentage killing shots please. Accidents happen, but this PSA if for the people who shoulder shoot on purpose.... Please stop, it doesn't matter if it is gun or bow... DON'T DO IT!

Give Us A Call, If You Don't See Him Fall !!

This came up on my Facebook memories from two years ago.

The first deer Gally was able to recover and the first deer that started this journey.

I've learned a TON these past two years and have put her full force training, knowing what exactly to do, making connections with other trackers and being able to be like "are we doing this right" or "is this worth even going out for"

We are not perfect, but we are STILL grinding.

8 more days and Gally will be ready to put more on the tailgate!

We are more than just dog walkers….
Constantly, we hear that a hunter brought in a buddy's dog, who seemed to follow the 3 hr old blood trail and still didn't recover the deer.
Well here's why….
Any dog has the ability to follow a trail, but it is SO MUCH more than that.
With the exception of a few, most top tracking teams have spent years training.
First, the dog….
They were selected as a puppy for their breed, and then their prey drive and work ethic were developed and nurtured. They were taught that they can follow blood, but then trained to follow a scent not visible to the naked eye, that is specific to their deer. Hundreds of hours of practice tracks, obedience training and honing in their skills goes into making them the dog that they are.
Second, the tracker.
Like most of you, they have been a hunter their whole life. They have gone to symposiums, seminars, classes and group training days. They have an extensive knowledge of deer anatomy, shot placement and appropriate wait times. They are familiar with most broadheads and bullets. They understand what each one of these does upon impact. After a 5 min phone call, most trackers will be able to tell you where you hit the deer, how far it will go and how long you should wait. They are right most of the time.
Third…. The team
They have trained and worked together for years. They have an unusually strong bond. The dog understands their handler and what they expect. The tracker can read their dog unlike anyone else. If their head is 6in above the ground instead of 2, they're on a predator's trail. If they whip their head in a certain direction, they just alerted. If they walk this way, they're on the trail, if they walk that way they're off. The tracker can read even the tiniest little nuances about their dog that even another tracker could not.
Separately, they are very capable. Together they are relentless. Walking hundreds of miles every season, they are exhausted but addicted, so they go on.
They lose sleep, time with their families and for a lot of trackers, money. It's not a job, it's a passion that they strive to perfect year after year.
So maybe, before you decide to let your buddy's dog have a go, consider having a trained, certified, tracking dog team run the line first.
Good luck to all of our hunters!

🚨RED HAS A PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT🚨
We are officially done taking shoulder shots for the year. We just cannot do it. We aren’t making this decision to be rude to anyone or punish anyone for making a bad/shoulder shot, there’s just not enough time or energy to run them all year. We take our share before the rut. Once the rut is on we have to focus on deer that are likely mortally wounded so they don’t go to waste, shoulder shots aren’t usually mortally wounded and they are non recoverable. There’s only about 6 or 7 ways to kill a deer with a bow (unless weird s**t happens) and a few of those you won’t need a dog. Heart, DOUBLE lung, DOUBLE is the key word there, or a major artery you likely won’t need a dog. If you hit the paunch, intestines, liver, diaphragm area, you will likely need a dog. In those cases you should not even think about tracking the deer under 12+ hours and if you do, go alone or with only one other person. Stay on track and if you lose blood mark last sign and LEAVE the way you came in. If it’s not one of those we cannot take the track. A few things to keep in mind- hit em high wave goodbye, hit the shoulder they will live to grow older. I know everyone says “I’ve killed deer in the shoulder blah blah” Well you got lucky, keep pushing that and your luck will run out. Stay off of the shoulder and do NOT shoot a deer that is angled towards you no matter what. I’ve put on more miles this year already than last year including rifle season and have seen so many bloody shoulder shot deer wounded that will not die but suffer. It’s our duty as hunters to take good shots, shoulder shots are not good shots. Teach your kids to stay away from the shoulder with any type of bow. I understand nobody means to hit the shoulder but why chance it. The lungs are huge! Aim back a bit. Good luck out there‼️PS. The deer in the picture was not a shoulder shot, that’s why he’s dead. Just a great picture 😎

Lux says:
when in doubt, back out!
Stay away from shoulder!
Don't grid search before you call a dog
Tell the truth
Don't be a turd and end up on the Do Not Track List!

Even if Gally can't get out right now, I'm still taking calls to get you connected to the group of trackers I know!

We will be out in less than 2 weeks!
