Car anxiety solution!
-
-
If your dog struggles to get in the car, try this method.
-
Get a good distance from the car, ideally 15 feet or more. Very briskly begin to approach the car with the dog.
-
If the dog won’t move at first, slowly and consistently add pressure to the leash like in the beginning of the video, releasing the pressure and moving forward as soon as the dog ‘unlocks’.
-
Once you are close to the car, turn and do it again.
-
Repeat the process, coaxing the dog closer and closer, and rewarding them for progress by walking them away from the car each time.
-
You can also use a high value treat or toy, tossed into the car, to get them over the final bit of hesitation.
-
Practice this over and over, and reward heavily!
-
Note: notice how intentionally I use leash pressure. The leash is a tool for guiding, not forcing.

Do you know what’s happening here?
-
-
This is Lola, an anxious morkie who goes after guests, won’t let anyone leave the house, and is food reactive.
-
This is the claiming exercise- it’s not a stay, but rather claiming an object, activity, or other person/dog, and helping the dog in training learn to leave it alone and relax.
-
-
This is the very first time Lola has been given true boundaries that she can understand- and she immediately became significantly more relaxed.
-
-
This exercise can be applied to many other situations as well. Boundaries and rules are essential for keeping a dog mentally happy and physically safe.
-
-
Remember, even anxious dogs NEED boundaries!!!

If your dog struggles to listen to you or take treats when anxious, this is likely part of the reason.
-
-
When helping your dog work through fears and anxiety, it’s extremely important to start with a level of stimulus (the thing causing the anxiety) that is enough to challenge but not enough to overwhelm.
-
-
When your dog is nervous, it begins to enter fight, flight, or avoidance mode, meaning other senses or typical responses will take a back seat or simply shut off.
-
-
In order to help them work through something most effectively, try decreasing the amount, intensity, or frequency of the stimulus- once you master that stage, increase the intensity again.

This ⬇️ is one of the best secrets for achieving that ⬆️ with your anxious dog!😁
-
-
Making sure that YOU are relaxed and confident is essential, but there’s another key element of your own attitude to bring to the table- *drumroll please*
-
Being in a learning mindset.
-
Seem simple? Obvious? Well that simple principle completely changed my abilities as a dog trainer.
-
You have to approach each situation with your dog with an eagerness to learn and improve your leadership skills. This will cause you to FACE challenges, rather than AVOID them- and it will make all the difference in the world for you and your dog.✝️🐕

Dogs that are nervous in public can benefit from more structure, like being in a heel.
-
-
This works for a few reasons- one is that it’s something familiar (you practice heel in regular places, not just scary ones). Another reason is that the dog has something to focus on besides the fear.
-
-
Another reason is the dog feels like you’re helping it understand how to handle the challenge. Think about the first time you went to a social event with a new group of people. Maybe you had a friend that was familiar with the group, and going with them made you feel confident because you had someone to stick to as well as someone who could give you cues as to how to interact with the group. Your dog needs this too. ✝️🐕

Luna is a three year old rescue with dog reactivity- this was during our first session introducing her to another dog!
-
-
Much of the time, people think they have a dog aggressive dog when they really just have an anxious dog who chooses fight over flight.
-
-
In these cases, when we give the dog confidence in itself and the handler, and set it up for a safe and successful interaction, the dog can show us what it truly wants with other dogs- in this case, a peaceful interaction.
