If anyone is looking for a “system” to develop and strengthen a horse, this should be your Bible- How a horse (especially a young one) uses its neck is crucial to its balance and we cannot continue to have young/developing horses using their necks incorrectly- too low too early is just as bad as too high when a rider is on their back!

Paul Belasik talks about neck position, and it’s importance:
“To me, neck shape is a very important connection to a humane and beautiful dressage. Regardless of the constant new amendments of regulations and guidelines from the competitive dressage organizations, it might be a good time to go over the fundamentals behind neck shape and its relationship to correct dressage, based on 500 years of experience and evidence.”

Several of you contacted me who are looking for an ammy friendly horse that can also be competed by their trainer but don’t want to import- Anuk is stateside and someone should grab him… he’s a fantastic character and goes and does things with ease!

No sympathetic instructor is trying to be purposefully mean, we are 1. Trying to make it easy for the horses to do what we ask, and 2) trying to make it easier for riders to meet their goals…

One more fitness related insight---

About 60 years ago, Roger Haller had a dressage lesson with a former Hungarian military officer, who’d moved to the USA after World War 2.

I went to watch, and before Roger’s lesson, Major Dezso Szilagyi was teaching a small group of riders who, when he asked them to sit the trot, began to bounce, wheeze and sweat.

Major Szilagyi was a basically soft spoken, kindly person, not one who ranted, but it was apparent that he was frustrated about what he was watching. He had them line up, and after all these years, what he said to them is as clear as if I’d heard it last week.

“Ladies and gentlemen----May I humbly suggest to you that dressage riding is not the last refuge of the non athlete.”

Carl Hester talks about making Medal winning Grand Prix stars: “It’s not about drilling the movements, it’s about their fitness, about having good characters. When you have someone like Charlotte (Dujardin) on a horse, they balance them. They’re not running around with it on the forehand for hours. We only work the horses four times a week. The rest of the time is hacking and fitness and other things. It’s not drilling. They get there because they’re balanced and because they’re talented.”
