Sometimes we joke that dressing a horse in Fancy Dressage tack turns them into a Fancy Dressage horse.

It is a joke, but it’s also kind of true. When we dress the part, we ride a little better. We draw ourselves up taller, find that “power persona” of a dressage rider we admire, and the horses feel the difference.

Yesterday, Potato took a minute to remember but pretty quickly figured out how to stand at the mounting block quietly and wait for me to ask him to move off. We were able to walk around during a riding lesson and turn both directions. This horse who “doesn’t turn right” is starting to soften on that side and explore what it would be like to be a little bit more ambidextrous than he’s used to being.

As I’m typing this, he’s standing with me nervously, but starting to take some deep breaths and settle in.

In other good news, he picks up his feet now! Especially if he gets a cookie after each one 😉
