Use a Cavaletti bar or a panel in front of your dog to get the correct weight shift. A panel could be a box, board or other flat item that is chest height or below.

What are you working on? Drop a picture or video of an exercise below! We LOVE seeing your dogs working!!
PROGRESSION OF WEIGHT SHIFTING
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
With dog in neutral stance position on a Cato Plank with the tilt accessory, inspire weight shifting by spacial pressure or (in this video) "It's Yer Choice" was used. The dog will engage core muscles and stabilizing muscles to shift weight front to back. The feet should remain still. Weight Shifting improves balance and the dog's weight distribution in both front and rear.

💫Do you have a dog that is tight in the lower back and hips?
💫Do you have a dog that needs to build strength in the rear assembly?
Take a look at this exercise that can stretch through the spine and the hips while engaging the lower back. The dog in the video is learning the exercise so pay close attention to the description portion to know what to look for!

Working on husbandry with my new chin/bridge hold stand. Just got this done so transferring previously trained behavior to new object! #caninehusbandry #positivedog #clickertrainingfordogs #bordercollies #vettech #vetcare
Puppy obstacle course!! The second time through she jumped off but that is ok. We want puppies to offer behavior and not be lured over different surfaces!
PLANK TO BACK UP TO DOWN
⭐️full body exercise
⭐️improve balance and proprioception
⭐️a variety of equipment can be used
🧰 I used a “back up and down” cue to get the shift back to down and front foot movement back to the red peanut. This may or may not work for your dog. Many dogs may back up off the equipment instead. You may have to play around with what cues will work. While you are figuring it out try the exercise on the flat or on equipment that is low to the ground.

Here I am teaching Fluri to hold a stand while I move. The cavaletti bar is to prevent sitting!
Using an elevated object helps to shift weight to the rear while the 2x4’s keep rear feet in alignment with the hips.
🐢 SLOW and CONTROLLED movement, without rear foot movement is 🔑!! Treat/hand position should be at natural nose height. If your pup is over-stimulated by the food, "It's Yer Choice" is a great impulse control game that could be implemented! 🤩😎
💥The 2x4’s add an element of rear limb awareness that improves the over all muscle engagement of this exercise.💥
Beginner reps: 3-5 reps
Intermediate reps: 5-8 reps
Advanced reps: 6-10 reps
Quality over quantity should be the focus. 👍 Out of position exercises are not efficient and could lend to injury. When your dog shows signs of fatigue (out of position, foot movement, avoidance, etc) it is time to stop whether that is rep 3 or rep 9.
Feel free to drop a video below of you working your pup!! 🙌🏻
Happy Training!! 🌟
Workout Wednesday! Hope everyone is having a great week!
🤩😎😁
For this low back engagement exercise, you can listen to the description given in the video to guide you on what to look for. It is important to watch your treat position. If you reward too high or low, you will not get the desired benefits. 💪
This can be a challenging strength exercise, at first, for dogs. So start slow and easy. Start with holding the position for 2-3 seconds and building from there. Repeat 3-5 times unless you see fatigue in your dog then adjust.👏👏
Post you pups below! Don’t hesitate to ask questions!!
Equipment: Cato Plank from Cato Outdoors
We are on a ROLLLL…. 🙌
Did you know the Rollover is an exercise that can be a part of a workout or cool down? The Rollover will work the spinal muscles, shoulders, hips and core! 💪
You want to start your pup in a sphinx down with a neutral spine (not curved unless standard for your breed). To teach the rollover, start with a food reward and lure the movement. Be mindful of your treat position in training the exercise. Draw the nose to the shoulder to guide the head to twist over the spine for the body to complete one revolution. You may find that your dog needs to learn one direction at at time or you may have to reward good intention and break down in steps before getting the the final behavior. Once the movement is slow, thoughtful and smooth in motion, you can add a verbal command to name it. When your dog completes a rollover the ending position should be a sphinx down. Once this exercise is learned, be sure to execute the same number both right and left directions.
Progression: Start in a balanced, natural stand position. Ask for the sphinx down, execute the rollover one direction to the sphinx down position and then back to a balanced stance. Repeat the opposite direction.
NOW... 💥 Let’s see your pups in action! 😍 Whether they are just learning the Rollover or you have a different variation! Post a video or photo below! 😎🐶🐩
Workout Wednesday is HERE!!! 💥 Let's talk a little about REAR FOOT TARGETING!!
It is a KEY 🔑 element to teaching rear limb awareness. BLCC prefers to teach Rear Foot Targeting as a forward motion and not as an extension of the back up behavior. 💪
Progressing to put the behavior on a verbal cue can really advance your fitness training! Check out this FUN example in the video below! 🐶 🦮'
Post any questions below! Feel free to share with us any photos/videos of your pups practicing Rear Foot Targeting! Would LOVE to see them!!
3 legged unsupported stand. Increased balance and proprioception along with increasing strength to the opposite contra lateral rear limb.
THREE legged stands. This exercise is focused on the UP motion of the stand from a down position. 3-legged stands generally will shift more weight to the rear and to the contralateral leg. When the dog lifts the paw and dips their head it will cause a more dramatic twist through the spine. This somewhat controlled motion will improve strength in the "core", increase balance and proprioception. 3-legged stands can be done with the dog targeting your hand but it will be a more challenging exercise to get your dog to lift the limb and stand without targeting.
Due to handler position, slippery crate floor and just not rewarding for the desired movement, dog's can learn to move to a down position "pushing too much with their front" which results in over rounding their pelvis and sliding rear feet forward.
In this video, I show you how "rear foot targeting" can help with stacking your dogs joints better so that they can ultimately access power in the rear to stand and move forward.
Tips:
1️⃣ create some space between you are your dog so that when lifting their head to look at you, it does not cause rounding of their pelvis or over rotation (this causes your dog's feet to slide forward and weight to shift off their feet and onto their butt or tail)
2️⃣ don't "push" into your dog too much when luring a down position (this causes your dog to over rotate and then rear feet get wide and slide forward)
3️⃣ don't use an elevated object under your dog;s rear feet unless you are also using the same height elevated object under front feet. If you elevate rear feet, it shifts weight forward and does not teach "active" joint stacking of the hind end.
THESE THINGS MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOUR DOG TO ACCESS POWER FROM THEIR REAR END DUE TO HIND LEGS BEING "LESS" FLEXED
4️⃣ use a rear foot targeting mat to help your dog's rear feet remain still, stack butt over hocks and knees over rear feet. This will encourage good posture and movement
5️⃣ it is ok to use two 2x4's to inspire good posture and movement
6️⃣ when luring, keep your dog's nose above spine height so that he can shift weight to the hind legs as he is lowering to a down position. This will help your dog stay in a sphinx down position (if your dog's head is lower, it will cause your dog to shift to a hip, slide rear feet wide etc)
This is what Fluri thinks of taking a break at the pool. #extrafluri @rebelsoulminis
Weight shifting on the @fitpawsusa mini bones. Using a “bridge hold” to get the weight shift to the rear.
