We’ve done the work for you! Here is a breakdown of owning a donkey!

We often get asked about the cost of owning a donkey. We've done the research, and here’s a breakdown of the basic annual costs. Adopting or rescuing a donkey means taking on financial responsibilities. Understanding these costs ensures we have responsible donkey owners who are prepared for the journey ahead!

Should you be concerned if your donkey stops eating?

While any animal not eating is a worry, donkeys can face serious health risks if they go off their feed for too long. Here's why: donkeys efficiently convert food to energy, making them prone to obesity and increased fat stores. If they stop eating for a while, their bodies break down stored fat quickly which creates high levels of triglycerides in the blood. When triglyceride concentrations within the blood get too high, they are deposited into the liver causing damage and in severe cases, even life-threatening liver failure. This condition is called hyperlipemia.

How you can help: Hyperlipemia can result secondary to primary illness (ex. colic), stressful situations, or an increase in the body's nutritional requirements. Maintaining donkeys at a healthy weight, performing appropriate metabolic testing and care, and ensuring immediate veterinary care when they stop eating can help prevent this condition from starting.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

It’s calling for over 100 degree weather this weekend!! Read these water tips!

As summer brings hot, sunny days, ensuring that your donkeys stay hydrated is paramount. Proper hydration is vital for their health and well-being. Here are some expanded tips to help you keep your donkeys well-watered during the summer months:

1. **Morning Hydration:**
Donkeys generally consume a significant portion of their daily water intake in the early morning hours. To support this natural behavior, make sure their water is fresh and plentiful each morning. Check the water levels and refresh the supply early in the day to encourage them to drink enough before the heat sets in.

2. **Avoid Sunlight:**
Water left in direct sunlight can become uncomfortably warm, which may deter donkeys from drinking. Position water troughs in shaded areas to help keep the water cooler. If natural shade is unavailable, consider using a canopy or shade cloth to protect the water from direct sunlight.

3. **Prevent Algae Growth:**
Warm temperatures and sunlight accelerate algae growth in water troughs, making the water unappealing and potentially unhealthy for donkeys. Clean your water troughs more frequently during the summer to prevent algae buildup. Scrubbing the troughs with a brush and a vinegar solution can help keep them clean and free of algae.

4. **Adequate Water Supply:**
On average, a donkey drinks about one gallon of water per hundred pounds of body weight daily. For instance, a 500-pound donkey would need approximately 5 gallons of water each day. Ensure your water trough is large enough to accommodate the daily water needs of all your donkeys. Alternatively, consider installing an automatic waterer that refills the trough as needed, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh water.

5. **Water with Hay:**
It is essential never to feed your donkey hay without providing access to water. Consuming dry hay increases their need for water, and without it, they could risk dehydration. Always check that your donkeys have water available when they are eating, especially if they are consuming dry feed.

**Additional Tips:**

- **Monitor Water Intake:** Keep an eye on how much water your donkeys are drinking. A sudden decrease in water intake can be a sign of health issues or problems with water quality.
- **Check for Leaks:** Regularly inspect water troughs and automatic waterers for leaks or malfunctions to ensure a constant supply of water.
- **Hydration on the Go:** If you are transporting donkeys or moving them to different locations, always bring a supply of fresh water to ensure they remain hydrated.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your donkeys stay healthy, hydrated, and comfortable throughout the hot summer months.

DONKEY HOOF CARE
Preventing Thrush, Whiteline, Abscesses, and Other Issues

Spring showers can lead to hoof issues like thrush, whiteline disease, and abscesses for equines. May, National Farriers Month, is ideal for focusing on proactive hoof care. Prevent problems by ensuring regular trimming, maintaining clean and dry living conditions, providing proper nutrition, and monitoring for signs of trouble. Regular exercise, appropriate turnout, and routine farrier visits are crucial. Celebrate farriers for their essential role in maintaining hoof health. By implementing these strategies, you can keep your donkey's hooves healthy and strong throughout the spring and beyond.

Spring has sprung! Which means…vaccination season is upon us as well!

If you are wondering what vaccinations your horse should receive, the answer is — There are no “one size fits all” vaccine recommendations. A veterinarian who knows your horse and your management system is your best resource to recommend what vaccines your equine friend should receive and with what frequency!

While vaccination does not prevent disease in all circumstances, a good immunization protocol minimizes the risk of infection and remains an essential component of responsible horse ownership. A vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for a yearly check-up of your equine friend and a great way to catch any health concerns early.

If you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling your horse's vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

Our Story

Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue (PVDR) is the country’s largest donkey focused equine rescue. Headquartered in Texas, PVDR takes in donkeys from all over the United States. When those donkeys are ready for adoption, they are shipped to satellite adoption centers across the states to make these wonderful animals available to adopters nationwide.

The satellite adoption centers are run by volunteers on the volunteer’s farms. The volunteers care for the donkeys, help adopters find the right donkey match, and many help provide other services - such as fundraising and special events - to help PVDR with their mission.

The Central Virginia Satellite Adoption Center is located in Concord, Virginia - about 10 minutes East of Lynchburg. This facility is not open to the general public, but we are available by appointment to approved donkey adopters.

To apply, visit www.DonkeyAdoption.org. Your application will be reviewed by our National Adoption Coordinator, then forwarded to the adoption center closest to your location or the center closest to you that has donkeys available currently.
