I came into the entry of the kennel house this morning to find Audrey had moved a mattress into the mudroom to sleep last night. She wanted to give some extra comfort to Foster as he’d been struggling with seizures yesterday. It’s not a great photo, but it’s a photo that shows true dedication and what it means to go above and beyond. She could just have easily stayed upstairs in bed, ignoring his whimpers, but instead she made the extra effort to provide some human touch. I’ve had a few employees through the years who live up to the “Sleep Through the Storm” story, and Audrey is definitely one of them:

A young man applied for a job as a farmhand. When the farmer asked for his qualifications, he said, “I can sleep through a storm.”

This puzzled the farmer… but he liked the young man. So he hired him.

A few weeks later, the farmer and his wife were awakened in the night by a violent storm ripping througha the valley. He leapt out of bed and called for his new hired hand, but the young man was sleeping soundly.

So they quickly began to check things to see if all was secure. They found that the shutters of the farmhouse had been securely fastened. A good supply of logs had been set next to the fireplace.

The farmer and his wife then inspected their property. They found that the farm tools had been placed in the storage shed, safe from the elements. He sees that the bales of wheat had been bound and wrapped in tarpaulins.

The tractor had been moved into its garage. The barn was properly locked tight. Even the animals were calm and had plenty of feed. All was well.

The farmer then understood the meaning of the young man’s words, “I can sleep through a storm.”

When our sled dogs move to family homes, people often comment about how quiet they are. They rarely bark when they are inside or outside. But, Quill still gets back to her sled dog roots and gets exceptionally noisy when it’s time to get out of the van with Steve and Michele for fun time!

I’m so excited for the 25th Anniversary party this Sunday in Lansing for TOGO Touring Artists, Smokin’ Sled Dog Records. Jamie-Sue Seal has been my friend, mentor, cheerleader and booking agent for over twenty years! She’s has helped me promote sled dogs in ways I’ve never imagined and as a result I’ve spoken in some pretty incredible venues as part of arts in education programs and keynote events. We have our bags packed and are on our way!

On Sunday August 25, join us as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary in Lansing Michigan at Stage One at Sycamore Creek Eastwood located at 2200 Lake Lansing Rd! We’re overjoyed and over the moon to share this moment with you as we reflect on our journey thus far with Smokin’ Sleddog Records & TOGO Touring Artists, and set our sights ahead. Music & Merriment will be provided 5-7pm ET including performances by Sunny Wilkinson & Ron Newman, Sharrie Williams, Siusan O’Rourke, Zig Zeitler and more! Sled dog racing champ Tasha Stielstra will also be in attendance. Woof! More guest appearances and info coming soon~

We were at the gift shop at Tahquamenon Falls State Park and they had these adorable magnets. I know, they are probably at many tourist shops but I don’t get out much! I have no idea how a company decides which names to print, but there were a lot of names from our kennel dogs, both past and present. It brought back a lot of good memories!

I had several requests to host a mushing camp for adults after all my posts earlier this summer about my mushing camps for kids. I just wrapped up three days of mushing camp/UP backwoods fun with a great group of ladies. We packed some super cool activities into the weekend, including a visit to the Wild Blueberry Festival in Paradise, a hike around the lower Tahquamenon Falls, a pontoon ride to a beautiful bog filled with pitcher plants, wild blueberry and blackberry picking, an ATV ride, campfire fun, puppy loving and a late night trip to Lake Superior to find yooperlites!

I’m sharing this so I can remember to check the accuracy of their predictions later this winter. If they are accurate, it’s going to be a great season!

Michigan can expect periods of wet snow and rain to begin in early November with "frigidly cold" temperatures through Nov. 11.

A big thanks to Audrey and special guest Hannah for taking care of all the dogs and puppies this week while Tasha was leading a Lead Dog Travel trip this week to Bois Blanc and Drummond Islands. It was a spectacular week filled with hiking, biking, kayaking, flying and exploring unique places. This was the second island hopping trip for this summer and it will definitely be on the schedule for next year!

We built an outdoor pizza oven at our Girls Mushing Camp a couple of weeks ago at Musher’s Village. Our little team of engineers did a great job reading the directions, adjusting some of the plans, and tweaking the chimney to make sure the ventilation worked. Ta Da, we made pizza!!

Julie is a sweet, gentle Siberian Husky in need of a family. I rescued her a month or so ago when her owner could no longer care for her dogs. She’s about 10 years old, never barks, and walks very well on a leash. She’d be a great walking companion and looks and acts younger than her age. She gets along with other dogs, is a little reserved but not extremely shy, and is about 50 lbs. Let me know if you need a companion. 😉

Tristan came to mushing camp four days ago very apprehensive about dogs. Today he left in love with them. On the last day of camp the kids choose a couple of favorite dogs to get their photo with. Wings was Tristan’s favorite…he’s a pretty big, very active dog, but they hit it off!

Mushing Camp part two is underway! This is the boys/girls group and we wasted no time training them to be sled dogs! Last night was perfect for picking wild blueberries. It’s one of my favorite activities to do with them as they love wandering through the woods and eating berries. After working hard this morning we took a break at Luce County Park to cool off and relax at the beach.

Mushing camp is so much more than mushing…it’s friendships, laughter, and imagination. It’s all the things that happen when we disconnect a pile of pre-teen and early teen girls from the on-line world. It was a bit rainy yesterday but that didn’t stop them from role playing “Oregon Trail” in the rain…complete with a “horse”, “the plague”, “grandma and grandpa” and “the deceased”. We even discussed that it’s when you aren’t “learning a lot” that you’ve actually learned the most. We’ve learned everything from how puppies develop, to how to care for injured dogs to how to do dishes without a sink. We even learned a bit about Ragtime as we were invited to the Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis for a special outreach performance this afternoon, complete with an ice cream social. ❤️🐾

Employee spotlight part two…if you’re not convinced that working here prepares you for the corporate world (see the post about Miranda yesterday), then it surely will prepare you for Spartan Racing! Audrey is working here this summer and she completed two back-to-back Spartan Races (running races with obstacles) at Cannonsburg Ski Hill this weekend near Grand Rapids. Congratulations Audrey!
