This is the season for all the new foals. Knowledge is power, so here is one of the possible problems you can encounter. This is called hypoplastic carpal bones. Normally before birth, then carpal bones are cartilage models and contain no bone. By the time the foal is born, the cartilage ossifies and becomes bone. This is now resistant to damage and can support the weight of the foal. However, if the foal is born before these cartilage models turn to bone, they can become 'crushed'. This will cause the limb to bend. Once crushed, there is no going back. In an ideal world, placing a cast before the bones crush will prevent damage. This little guy got a cast to prevent more crushing and hopefully his growth plate will compensate as he grows. If not, then he may need surgery to correct the deformity.

The mysterious SI joint. SI stands for sacroiliac joint. This is where the hind limb (pelvis) attaches to the spine, and is located at the high point of the rump. This joint is a fibrous joint and does not have much motion, but injury or irritation to this joint causes pain. The good news: injection of this joint is very effective at alleviating pain.
