Our July pet of the month is Fifi! 🧡 Fifi is a 6-year-old rabbit that loves camping, basking in nature, and eating breakfast salads. 🥗🐰

One day, Fifi's owner went to check on his daughter and discovered that she had somehow snuck a rabbit into the house without anyone noticing! After finding Fifi, they moved him to the living room and got him litter box trained!

Fifi has visited our hospital twenty times this year to address ongoing dental issues and constant abscess formations. Fifi's owner is always willing to do whatever it takes for Fifi.

Fifi is very sweet and always lets our staff do whatever we need to help him feel better! No matter how many times we poke and prod him, he always sits there and lets us; and then, of course, enjoys some pets and cuddles following treatments! Dr. Kragness and Dr. Raguin has both expressed appreciation for the owner's attitude and a fondness for Fifi! 🧡🐰

Clarice is a 2-year-old female bearded dragon who was rescued from a poor situation. She initially came in for a broken humerus (arm bone). 🦎

While treating the broken arm with a special splint and good pain control, Dr. Ruoff also noticed a large mass in her coelom (belly). Once Clarice’s arm was healed, she was taken to surgery to remove the large mass which was starting to affect her other organs.

Dr. Ruoff worked diligently and carefully to separate the mass from her other internal organs including her fat pads, intestines, reproductive tract, and even her lung.

The mass was enormous and was 33% of Clarice’s total body weight! Clarice is healing and doing very well at home with her new owner. 🧡

Tuna is a 6-year-old female Sulcata Tortoise who came to us on emergency because she pr*****ed and had a lacerated bladder.

Dr. Lykin’s sedated and anesthetized Tuna to repair her bladder and to reduce the pr*****ed tissue. A purse string suture was placed around her vent to help prevent another prolapse from happening.

Tuna has since been doing great at home and had her vent sutures removed at her recheck visit! 🐢🧡

Soup is a Budgett’s frog who was brought in for not eating for four days and he had a hard lump on his side.

Soup’s owner was concerned he ate some substrate while at the pet store and after some radiographs, our suspicions were confirmed that Soup ate TWO large decorative stones. 🪨

After administering some injectable sedatives, Dr. Walth was able to enter through the esophagus with a small enough instrument and remove both stones from the patient’s stomach.

In total the stones weighed 11 grams which was a third of Soup’s original weight! We began recovery after the procedure and he was able to go home that day to finish recovering at home. 🧡🐸

Dr. Lykins recently attended an ABVP conference in New Orleans, where she did a diagnostic fish wet lab to get some additional training with aquatic medicine! The wet lab used live Koi fish as their demo patients. The Koi fish were sedated during the wet lab and were safely returned to their fish farm after the lab was finished.

Dr. Lykin’s was able to practice blood draws, ultrasound techniques, necropsy (on donated deceased fish), and celioscopy!

The health of our aquatic patients are very important and Dr. Lykins would love to see more fish patients! 🐠🧡

The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine recently held it’s first class on Reptiles of the Southwest at the Chirichahua Desert Museum (Chiricahua Desert Museum & Geronimo Event Center). The 5-day class taught veterinary students some important biology along with reptile medicine and surgical techniques. The class also reviewed the treatment of envenomation and poisonings in dogs and cats.

Arizona Exotic's Dr.’s Johnson and Walth were instructors along with Dr. Caretenuto from the U of A and renowned herpetologist, Dr. Gordon Schuett. The class was both educational and a lot of fun! 🙌

This little bearded dragon came in from a pet store for lameness of his left front and left back leg. 🦎

He was bright, curious and eating in our hospital, so when the pet store wanted to euthanize him, we found him a home instead! 🏠

He was adopted by our TA, Joslin and he is now thriving splint-free and without any issues! 🧡

This is Axel, a 13 year old female California Kingsnake. She presented to Dr. Lykins for chronic pseudobuphthalmia of the left eye. 🐍

Pseudobuphthalmia can occur due to dysfunction or blockages with the lacrimal duct and infections (bacterial, fungal, parasitic). Our team drained the fluid from the left eye and then tried medical management injectable medications first. Unfortunately, the fluid returned to the left eye and it was elected to move on to surgical correction of the lacrimal duct.

Dr. Lykins performed a surgery on Axel called a conjunctivoralostomy, placing a temporary stent that acts as the new lacrimal duct to allow drainage of the fluid.

Axel did great for her procedure and her stent will be removed in 4 weeks! 🧡

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫: 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐲! 🤩✨ Mandy exemplifies the core value of keeping an open mind. Mentally, she shares the superhuman strength of Luisa by not only taking on expanded responsibilities and a bigger role as the hospital manager, but also implementing new payroll programs, scheduling software, and staffing procedures at the same time. Her effective communication has been crucial in making the transition for the new partnership as smooth as possible. It is also apparent that she exceeds expectations by truly advocating for her staff and doing her best to help with questions and concerns brought to her. 🧡

Jamesie was transferred to AZEAH from another hospital in town due to concern for a gastrointestinal foreign body obstruction. 🐰

Based on his x-rays, bloodwork, examination and declining condition, the tough decision was made to take him to surgery. While most rabbits exhibiting symptoms of gastrointestinal hypomotility or stasis do not need surgery, in some cases, a life threatening blockage is present requiring surgical removal.

Dr. Klein was able to surgically removed a large hairball from his duodenum (first part of his small intestine)!

Many GI blockages in rabbits are due to ingested hair from grooming themselves or their bonded mate. Brushing can reduce this risk especially during times of heavy shedding.

He spent several more days in hospital receiving intensive care after which he was discharged home and is back to thriving! 🧡🐰

Hammie is hamster that came in to AZEAH because of an unfortunate mishap with a zipper. 🐹

While Hammie wasn’t bothered by the zipper, he couldn’t stay like this forever! Dr. Walth and our team worked quickly to get him unstuck. He left happy, healthy and zipper free! 🙌🧡

Sunglee came into AZEAH because he was bleeding from his eye. He had a large hay awn embedded on the inside of the upper eyelid. 👁️

Dr. Klein numbed the area around his eye with a local anesthetic and the hay was removed! He was sent home with anti-inflammatory pain medication and medicated eye ointment. Sunglee is expected to make a full recovery! 🧡🐰

Stanley is a 5 year old comet goldfish that came in for a mass cranial to his dorsal fin.

Dr. Lykins took a biopsy of the mass and it came back as a soft tissue sarcoma. The location of the mass makes it a difficult surgical case, so we elected to monitor him since he is doing well otherwise. We were able to collect blood samples, perform radiographs and do a CT scan on Stanley!

Stanley has been doing well at home and we are continuing to monitor his tumor for growth. 🧡

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫: 𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐮𝐨𝐟𝐟! 🤩 Dr. Ruoff is a final shining star this month and she was awarded for being an inspirational educator, leader, and team player. Dr. Ruoff always communicates effectively and efficiently, exceeds expectations, and keeps an open mind. Dr. Ruoff has set the bar for what it means to be a team player by covering shifts from the front to the back of the hospital. Thank you for all you do, have done, and continue to do for our Exotic Animal Hospital family. 🧡

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫: 𝐑𝐚𝐲! 🤩 Ray has been chosen as this month’s shining star because of the wonderfully positive attitude they have been able to maintain through all the trials and tribulations that reception has been going through as of late. They have truly kept an open mind through all of it and have far passed exceeding expectations of being able to roll with the punches. Meanwhile, still being able to maintain the same stellar level of empathy and compassion towards everyone they interact with as always. Thank you, Ray, for all of your hard work and for being you. You are greatly appreciated. 🧡

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫: 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐜𝐚! 🤩 Rebecca is one of our many great shining stars for this month. Rebecca is a cornerstone at our Mesa hospital and we don’t know what we would do without her. She’s often the staff member that we know we can rely on for various things around the hospital, like drawing blood reliably from difficult patients, placing catheters on dehydrated patients, and taking text-book-level radiographs. Rebecca is also a wealth of knowledge and is often the person that everyone can turn to, to answer questions (which she loves) about patient care, policies and protocols, and best practices. And most importantly, she is always focused on the best care for her patients. She’s a wonderful teacher, a brilliant technician, a good friend, and a good person. We love you Rebecca and thank you for all that you do. 🧡
