A fun shout out for Farmer Ryan & the amazing work he does (all while running a farm!) with Rogue Valley Farm to School
💚💚💚💚💚
Educator Intros continue with Ryan Idso-Weisz!
As a child growing up in the Midwest, Ryan spent much of his time in the woods, ponds, and his family's garden. Coming home with jars of tadpoles, rocks, and pockets full of dirt. His zest for adventure and love of the natural world knew no end. Now, as an adult, Ryan's love of nature carries on and he is still coming home with pockets full of dirt, but this time it's from his farm.
Ryan dedicated much of his professional life to renewable energy and tending to the planet. In 2017 Ryan moved to the Rogue Valley from Minnesota. There he had been the manager of a grant supported county farm. That farm donated 100% of the produce to local food shelves, shelters and provided education for the community. He, along with his family, started a series of community gardens dedicated to providing access to health and education through gardening.
His commitment to improving the world is both a deeply professional and personal value. He and his family are dedicated to land conservation, regenerative practices, pollination efforts, food preservation and all things farm life at Itty Bitty Acres in Southern Oregon.

Summer Day
—Mary Oliver
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

The Story of the Hummingbird
One day a terrible fire broke out in a forest - a huge woodlands was suddenly engulfed by a raging wild fire. Frightened, all the animals fled their homes and ran out of the forest. As they came to the edge of a stream they stopped to watch the fire and they were feeling very discouraged and powerless. They were all frightened and in awe at the destruction of their homes. Every one of them thought there was nothing they could do about the fire, except for one little hummingbird. This particular hummingbird decided it would do something. It swooped into the stream and picked up a few drops of water and went into the forest and put them on the fire. Then it went back to the stream and did it again, and it kept going back, again and again and again. All the other animals watched in disbelief; some tried to discourage the hummingbird with comments like, "Don't bother, it is too much, you are too little, your wings will burn, your beak is too tiny, it’s only a drop, you can't put out this fire."
And as the animals stood around disparaging the little bird’s efforts, the bird noticed how hopeless and forlorn they looked. Then one of the animals shouted out and challenged the hummingbird in a mocking voice, "What do you think you are doing?" And the hummingbird, without wasting time or losing a beat, looked back and said, "I am doing all that I can." before returning to the stream again.
This show of perseverance and determination was noticed by the great spirit, who decided to show favor in the little hummingbird, bringing forth a great rain. The rain quenched the flames and smothered the fire. From the ash a brilliant rainbow emerged, engulfing the hummingbird in color. When the hummingbird emerged from the rainbow it emerged as bright and colorful as the rainbow itself. Forever bringing brilliant colors to all hummingbirds simply by not giving up and doing all that it could.
