Just like kids, dogs need mental stimulation too! Keep their minds active by trying the following -

1) Don't stick to just one route when walking. The same walk every day won't just be boring for you, it'll be boring for your dog too. Switch it up - visit the park, walk through a new neighborhood, checkout a new trail...the new sights and smells will definitely get your pup excited!
2) Make your dog work for treats. Try not to give your dog a treat for every little thing - make it a reward. Some ideas include having your dog sit, give paw, lay down, stay. You can even build a small obstacle course and hide the treats at the finish! Make it fun!
3) Arrange play dates for your dog.
4) Physical activity - running, walking, playing...all great!
5) Provide interactive toys during playtime.
6) Rotate your dogs toys/bones and give him new ones.
7) Bring your dog with you to the store! (as long as they are allowed of course).
8) Take trips to local dog parks. Let your dog run free in a secured location while allowing him/her to gain socialization skills.

Have you heard about the recent incidents involving blue green algae and dogs? If you haven't heard the unfortunate news, dogs in North Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and New York have lost their lives after swimming in lakes/ponds containing blue green algae. If ingested, blue green algae can be toxic to both humans and dogs. However, dogs are more likely to consume large amounts while swimming with their mouths open, simply going for a drink, fetching a toy, or cleaning themselves.

Blue green algae is often found in non-flowing water during hot seasons. If you're worried about a body of water possibly containing blue green algae, be sure to keep your dog leashed at all times and avoid any water that appears dirty, foamy, or has a film on the surface of the water. If you think you're dog may have ingested blue green algae, you should rush your dog to a veterinarian immediately. Signs and symptoms may include: vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, weakness, confusion, collapse, breathing difficulties, and/or seizures. Why is my dog eating grass!?!?

Many dog owners worry and wonder why their dog is munching on grass. Some think dogs eat grass because their stomach is bothering them and they're trying to throw up. Well, that's a myth. You're dog could be eating grass for multiple reasons, but to throw up is not one of them. Those who do throw up right away could be reacting to the tickling of the grass in their throat or they simply ate too much too quickly. Grass is non-toxic to dogs, unless of course pesticides have been applied. Your dog could be eating grass to improve digestion and relieve gastrointestinal issues. Some dogs like to eat grass out of boredom, while others simply like the taste! Grass contains nutrients, digestive enzymes, fiber, minerals, and vitamins, so you may find your dog snacking on grass if they're lacking in any of these areas. Ensure your dog is on a balanced diet and if needed, try including probiotics and digestive enzymes. To sum it up, there's no need to panic when your dog goes for a taste of grass, but do take it into consideration and watch for those pesticide signs!

Do your dogs need to burn off some extra energy this weekend? Let them have a little freedom and space to run! We have done the research and have found the top ten dog parks in Colorado. Check these out!

TWIN LAKES - In the Gunbarrel area of Boulder, you'll find the west lake of Twin Lakes is sanctioned for off-leash dogs.

CHATFIELD STATE PARK - In Littleton, you can pay an entry fee of $13 to enter both the park and off-leash dog area. This dog park includes two awesome ponds and 69-acres of fun!

GLENDALE FARM OPEN SPACE - Located in Castle Rock, this 13-acre dog park is free to access and your pup will love the exercise.

WESTMINSTER HILLS - Westminster is home to one of the largest off-leash dog parks near Denver. This park is 420-acres and includes a few water features too! Better yet, 4 Noses Brewing is nearby and dog-friendly.

BEAR CREEK - Nestled in Colorado Springs, this 25-acre dog park comes complete with a restroom area, dog agility course, creek access, and beautiful grassy hills.

RITA VALENTINE - A 20-acre lot of rolling hills and space to explore in Steamboat Springs.

UNION RESERVOIR - For a $10 day pass, you can access the dog off-leash swim and beach area in Longmont. Take your dog out on a paddleboard while your there!

BIGHORN PARK - This free off leash park is located in Vail. While the pond and trails are beautiful, be aware that this park is not fenced in.

DURANGO OFF-LEASH AREA - This 24-acre park gives dogs access to the Animas River. It's also located at the base of Smelter Mountain, so it's perfect for day hikes!

CHERRY CREEK - This beautiful 107-acre park in Aurora has Cherry Creek running right through it! It's a very fun place to bring your dog, but be aware there's a limit of 3 dogs per person and a $13 entrance fee.

Seeing that Colorado is such a dog-friendly state, you will find dog parks nearly everywhere. Do your research before visiting - check whether the park is fenced in, check if there is an entrance fee, and familiarize yourself with the park rules. Temperatures are really heating up! Please be aware that the surface temperatures can become a threat to your pup's paws. Encourage them to walk in the grass and shaded areas as much as possible. If you're close to a body of water, have them take a quick dip! Water activities are always fun in this heat. Stay cool!

It's camping season! Of course, bringing your dog(s) camping is always more fun than leaving them behind. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind and plan for in advance in order to ensure an enjoyable trip. So, here's our camping check list!

1. Make sure your campsite is dog-friendly
2. Lookup veterinarians near your campsite and write down their information before leaving (you may not have cell phone service where you're going)
3. Bring plenty of extra water
4. Don't forget to pack their food and collapsible dog bowls
5. Bring a first aid kit
6. Leave enough car space for your dog to be comfortable while travelling (maybe even a window seat)
7. Bring multiple harnesses/collars with up-to-date dog tags. In case one harness breaks, you'll want to have a backup!
8. Don't forget the leash. If you're dog tends to run away, but you want to allow them to have some freedom, be sure to bring a long rope, a tie out cable, and/or extending leash that you can tie to a tree where you'll be hanging out.
9. Be aware of debris in the campsite - glass, metal, wire, fishing line, food scraps, dead animals, etc.
10. Bring p**p bags
11. Apply a flea/tick preventative
12. Never leave your furry friend unattended

Those are just a few tips to make your camping experience just that much better for both you and your adventurous pup. If you've never been camping with your dog(s) before and have questions or concerns, please feel free to comment below.
