This should infuriate anyone with a heart. Why "slaughter boxes" are legal is a horrifying tragedy.

I am so sad to have to tell you that we lost Zephyr the zebra. More than anything I am feeling a lot of anger about his short life. In the canned hunt ranches where he was born there is so much in-breeding and they’re given minimal care as they’re bred to be shot. He was taken from his mother at a day old to make the wild babies dependent on humans and appear tame. Bucket fed cheap milk replacer and taken to livestock auctions. Zephyr ended up in a filthy kill pen with his face cut up, legs swollen from kicking out at trailers and pens. He was always the sickly little brother of Ziggy and never grew much. When he got ill the vets were baffled as to what was wrong with him as he got weaker. They did a full panel of tests and diagnostics and sadly he passed away from equine herpes which he would have contracted and carried since being exposed to it in the awful places he was. His EHV-1 turned neurological and sadly he didn’t survive it. As it’s contagious Ziggy was rushed to OSU where he’s been treated and we hope he’s going to pull through. It’s touch and go so please say a prayer. Herpes is a virus that stays dormant for years and sadly the zebras immune systems were so compromised they are the ones who were most affected. Our sanctuary is now quarantined for 28 days and we have been working together with the state veterinarian to follow all necessary quarantine precautions and procedures. We’ve seen no signs of it with any other animals at the ranch and all his pen friends are fine including Waldo and the mini donkeys. There is a lot we don’t know about the herpes virus and zebras have their own strain to make it more complicated. All our focus is on Ziggy and his recovery and I shall keep you posted about his health. The vet teams have been incredible and we are hugely grateful. I just hope Zephyr knew some happiness in his short life and knew he was loved and cared about. It’s just a really sad day and I feel so heartbroken for these animals who are treated so poorly before they get to us they never truly recover 💔 Fly free Zephyr forever 😞

Harley and Hannah. I'm passionate about healthy weight maintenance for pets and always share my experience and suggestions from my time in the veterinary field. Pet obesity leads to many other detrimental health issues, (ie. joint and premature arthritic issues, poor heart health, labored breathing, overheating in warm weather, lethargy, diabetes and on and on...) I will absolutely recommend an owner change their pet's diet and increase exercise if I feel it will improve the pet's quality of life.
