These four very young babies were found in a demolished house in Ocean City and we were told had been without their mother for many days. This is what I wake up to every morning and wonder how I ever got involved in this madness.
Well, they've gone and done it again. Let's give a big shout out to An Itch In Time for trapping almost 50 Fox with mange. This latest big boy came from Pennsauken and it's pretty obvious he's not happy about this at all. Unfortunately, his tail and his whole body is in really bad shape so he will be here for quite a while. The tail seems to be the longest thing to heal and probably will not have fur when he does get released but considering it's summer we think he will be okay until the cold weather comes and by then he should have a nice fluffy tail.
This poor little hog really misses his mama.
Give me your foot. No, leave my foot alone, I want to go to sleep.
After breakfast playtime.
Look how much this mom wants to grab her babies and take care of them. She is now with them and they have all calmed down. They really don't know how lucky they are to have gotten to Wildlife Aid and even though this is just a drop in the bucket of all the horrible things that go on with wildlife, at least we know we're being kind to this family as well as many others that get to us.
A big thank you to Nick from ACES who brought me this family of raccoons from an Attic and Ventnor. Most removal people and even homeowners are told to drive these little guys into the woods and let them go and hopefully there is a mom that can go at the same time but many times that is not the case and it is not the right thing to do no matter what. These moms went dumped separately do not wait for their babies their petrified confused and do not know what's going on. When the babies are dumped separately they most certainly will die from either starvation or a predator or extreme temperatures. We are fortunate to have some very good removal people that bring us these families and orphans so they can stay together. Can you imagine what these poor little babies are going through right now let alone if they were let out of the traps in the woods. The mom cannot gather them all up when they are frantic, find a new home, food, water, safety, all the important things that they have learned from the area they were taken from. It just breaks my heart to know this goes on all the time. I told this family they don't know how lucky they are even though they are so upset.
These baby rabbits have been without romaine lettuce all day, even though they had other food choices, but romaine is their number one favorite, especially the leafy green part. It may be hard to believe but they are one of the more expensive animals we have to care for because two heads of romaine lettuce are about $5 and these little guys can go through two heads a day, and we have two more cages with babies that are close to being released, thank goodness. It's not like we can buy a 50 lb bag of dog kibble and have it last quite a while. These little guys need fresh romaine everyday. Even though they would eat grass clover and dandelion, we do not have the time to go and find as much as they need.
This is just one carrier of baby squirrels that just got their breakfast. In about one more week they can go into an outside cage and start to learn what the wild world has to hold for them. They may realize the grass isn't always greener once the door is opened.
These little chipmunks unfortunately where dug up by plumbers yesterday. They were not able to be gotten back with the mother since the entire area has been excavated.
This is what Fox cussing sounds like. Pretty sure she's directing all these bad words at me.
This little baby pretty much did nothing all day but as you can see he's very sleepy.
Mom and her five babies. Imagine how these moms feel when they're taken away from their babies all because they are trying to keep them safe and warm in somebody's attic or under a shed or wherever they can find to raise their babies. Everyone cuts down those big fat trees with holes in them. Where can animals go anymore? It's not like they have a choice of birth control.
Rosemary Brody is a hero to this Mom and her 5 babies who were going to be dumped after the mom was trapped from a roof an hour away from where Rosemary lives. When she found out what was going to happen she contacted Wildlife Aid and drove an hour at 10:00 at night to bring this family to us, arriving here at 1:00 a.m. Imagine how frightened this mom would be if she were released away from home late at night and her five very young babies were left on the ground on a cold night, but unfortunately this is what happens almost every time a family is taken away. There are very few options for those who want to do the right thing and we are possibly the only organization in New Jersey that will house mothers and babies long-term because we know that the moms are not capable of finding a new shelter and food while also gathering up their babies. It's not like they can look on Google to find accommodations. Animals usually think of themselves first and their babies second so when dumped in the woods it's more than likely that a predator will find the babies or they will die from starvation or extreme temperatures. Imagine taking a feral cat and her kittens and driving them far away and putting them in the woods. How anyone can do this and sleep at night I will never understand. Rehabilitators typically will take orphan babies but not adults which is very sad because these mothers make it so much easier to care for babies rather than hand raising them and it is the humane thing to do. We think Rosemary Brody is the best.
Episode 2 at the Currie Corral. No animals were injured during this altercation. Sophie, "Miracle Cat", obviously does not want to share her food nor her apartment. Make sure your sound is on so you can hear the fox.
More great videos from Barbara. For those of you who think the fox is going to eat your cat, it might be the other way around
